Uuno Klami (1900-1961) was born in Virolahti and studied in Helsinki, Paris and Vienna. While living in the capital city Helsinki, he always spent his summers in the original homestead in Virolahti. Klami is most known for his colourful orchestral works, but works for piano frame the different times of the composer's life nicely. The piano works are so joyous that transcribing from for organ is firmly based. Surumarssi (Trauermarsch) Op. 8 was composed when Klami was 16 years old, most likely in memory of his late mother. Pastoral A-flat major was composed in December 1919; I find it contains the feeling of Christmas. Barcarole Op. 5 is a French-influenced work. I often find myself thinking of a boat bobbing on waves, while I play this work. I believe these organ transcriptions bring many joyful moments in concerts as well as in other congregational use. And not only that: they can be used as pedagogic material as well.

The Planets is cast as a single unit, consisting of seven movements, varying greatly in character, each of which describes a planet or a celestial body. The music for Sol is built out of the massive tutti-sound of the organ. The feeling is very much like the feeling of the sun shining down brightly onto you on a warm summer's day.

The seasons of the church year that follow Easter, including Ascension, Pentecost, and Trinity Sunday, have sometimes received less attention in the organ service-playing repertoire. Anna Laura Page's collection of hymn arrangements for these late spring and summer Sundays will provide a wealth of useful material with straightforward and easy-to-play pieces. All of the hymn tunes employed are well-known, and several of the pieces combine multiple hymns.

After leaving school he attended Guido Agosti's piano classes at the 1964 Accademia Chigiana summer school in Siena, and that autumn went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied the piano with Phyllis Hepburn-Lee and composition with Nicholas Maw. Probably of folk song origin, the Swedish hymn Den blomstertid nu kommer was first time published in the 1695 Swedish Hymnal. The Finnish version is traditionally sung in the end of the school year. The rhytmic toccata, followed by the joyful variations and an uplifting fuga by Lars Karlsson is based on this tune which strongly associates with the beginning of summer.

Thoughts on the composition “Zwischenklänge†with regard to the subject of “home and abroadâ€:- Music that never rests, that is in constant motion and mutation, its tones almost trembling, on the run, in constant tension.- Music that unfolds its beauty in the “in betweenâ€, in the appoggiatura, in the flash-like emergence and disappearance of harmonic colors.- Music as an evolvement of time, waiting, bustling, erupting, or withdrawing. The composition “Zwischenklänge†was awarded tje 11th Composition Prize of Contemporary Sacred Music of the European Church Music Festival Schwäbisch Gmünd. – The premiere was given on 27 August 2012 by Roman Summereder (Vienna).Listen to “Zwischenklänge†on Youtube
