Kuhnau's Magnificat in C major is - apart from his Biblical Sonatas - considered to be his most ambitious and best known work. However, as recent research has revealed, there are indeed many other large-scale works among his oeuvre which are largely presumed lost today, apart from those that were published as first editions. Until now, only insufficient or erroneous editions of the Magnificat have been available, a piano reduction has not been available at all. Beyond that, editor David Erler has succeeded in tracking down new evidence on the authorship of four Laudes (insertion movements for performances over Christmas) and to carry out their altogether new placement in the main work. He was able to prove that Bach's Magnificat directly succeeded Kuhnaus's work and that the use of such Laudes was common in Leipzig's parish churches and beyond.

Organ Symphony No. 2 (2017) was written for and is dedicated to German organist Philip Hartmann. In all of my works that employ larger-scale forms (not just organ compositions), I am continually looking for different ways of providing the form and structure. My first organ symphony (2013) comprised three larger movements that charted a progression from dark to light. By contrast, this second organ symphony comprises 12 shorter movements that together build a larger structure out of varied emotional states. Although the movements are different in character, there are connections of harmony and motive across them. One goal behind this work is that it be suitable for effective performance on almost any organ, small or large. Most organ symphonies require a large instrument. By contrast, this piece can be played effectively on even a small organ with a limited number of stops (even a one manual organ with an octave pedal board). It can also be very effective on a large symphonic organ with many different colors and a huge tutti. Registration is left to the performer's discretion, and the organist is strongly encouraged to use the full extent of whatever resources are available. At less than 20 years of age, the youngest son of the Leipzig cantor of St. Thomas, Johann Sebastian Bach, withdrew from the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: Johann Christian Bach went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and composed mainly Latin church music between 1757 and 1760. His great successes with operas for Turin, Milan and Naples from 1761 onwards led him all the way to London. Bach's church music comprises a number of vespers compositions, some of them large-scale, including this Magnificat a 4 (1760) for soloists, choir and orchestra. The very diversified work gets its additional attraction from distinctively led oboes and horns.

Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) studied with Heinrich Lemacher and Walter Braunfels and became Professor of Composition and Music Theory at the Academy of Music in Cologne. From the end of the 1920s he made an important contribution to the new stylistic developments in organ music His smaller-scale compositions in particular, such as the Preambles and Interludes (1954) or the Little Preludes and Intermezzos (1932, ED 2221) point in new directions: the constraints of form have evidently been helpful in the process of breaking away from Romanticism; clarity and formal precision take the place of monumental grandeur of form. Suitable for concert or liturgical performance.

This large-scale composition (for large organ) is a full-scale recital piece on the well-known hymn tune Rendez a Dieu. The American Organist (Nov 2001) provides the following review of the work: ...a blockbuster of a recital piece, over 20 minutes in length, beginning quietly with a lush harmonic texture, but moving into a brisk toccata-like movement. A quieter movement separates this from the final virtuosic finale, also reflecting the French toccata style. 52 pages Published by: Zimbel Press.

Cityscape dates from 1992 and was composed for inclusion in an organ recital of Chicago composers as part of the Fourth Presbyterian Church's annual Festival of the Arts. The theme of that year's festival was Faces of the City. This three movement work, which depicts facets of the city, is based on a three-note descending scale (C-B-A), the opening notes of the popular song, Chicago, Chicago, that Toddlin' Town. Coincidentally, this same melodic sequence marks the beginning of OLD HUNDREDTH, and a citation of that melody occurs in the third movement. The Fourth Presbyterian Church is located on the part of North Michigan Avenue which is known as The Magnificent Mile. Each of its Sunday morning services begins with the singing of OLD HUNDREDTH, sung to the text of the Doxology. The first performance of Cityscape was played by David Schrader, to whom it is dedicated.

The dance is introduced in 6/8 against 2/4 time, before the exposition of a festive theme that alternates bouncing light passages with percussive chords. A more lyrical central episode precedes the recapitulation. The Basque fandango ends always with another dance step: 'Arin Arin' in 2/4, which is here characterized by scales, continuing the piece's joyful and vivacious character.

Johann Michael Haydn's oeuvre includes more than thirty works in Latin or German for two or three descants, composed for his dear choirboys of the Salzburg 'Kapellhaus'. The first setting of the ordinary in this series was the Missa Sancti Aloysii, composed in 1777. It was initially intended for the Commemoration of the Holy Innocents on 28 December, when the chapel boys celebrated their principal feast day. This exceptionally charming mass, characterized by a wonderfully effervescent joyfulness, is an insider's tip for anyone looking for new repertoire for three-part women's, girls' or boys' choir. By virtue of ist scoring, the mass is also eminently suitable for small-scale performances. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5425700.

French organist and composer, Marcel Dupre (1886-1971) is also remembered as a significant pedagogue. His Complete Course in Organ Improvisation is for beginners of Organ improvisation, who have previously acquired some Organ technique. The first volume gives focus to harmonisation of scales and chorales, phrases, cadences, modulation, and form and structure, among other musical aspects. Dupre studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor, where he won prizes for Piano, Organ and fugue, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He was a famous Organ virtuoso and was able to perform the entire works composed for the instrument by J. S. Bach from memory. Dupre's compositions and didactic works remain important to organists today and his Complete Course in Organ Improvisation is no exception. .
