Suite circulaire (2018) for organ is dedicated to Elisa Williams Bickers. The music takes a free, contemporary approach to the historical genre of circulating (or modulating) compositions, where the basic material moves through a variety of keys before returning home again. The goal is not simply to play a modulation game, but rather to construct a true musical discourse where the varied keys are an essential part of the concept. The first movement, Praeludium, is bright in character. Besides moving through varied keys, the movement is also animated with various looping patterns that provide another link to the circulating concept. The second movement, Ricercare, takes its content very literally from the title, which means to search out. Instead of being a proto-fugue, like many ricercares from the late Renaissance or early Baroque, the music searches through the keys by means of a wandering melody and a modulating accompaniment. The third movement, Toccata, is slightly manic in character. The syncopated theme heard at the start animates the movement as it moves through both tonal, modal, and bitonal/modal harmonies before reaching an excited conclusion. (When the suite is performed on an organ tuned in an unequal, circulating temperament, there is an additional circular effect provided by the quite varied key colors that are heard as the material moves through them.)Organ Duration: 14’ Composed: 2018 Published by: Zimbel Press.

The Reformation Symphony was composed in 1830 for the 300th anniversary of the Confessio Augustana, the founding of the Lutheran confession of faith. In the fourth movement, Mendelssohn quotes, elaborates and varies artfully the Luther-chorale Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott [God is our fortress], erecting a musical monument to the reformer Martin Luther. After an initial confl icting reception, the Reformation Symphony meanwhile is established fi rmly in the concert repertoire. EB 8058 is intended for performances with organ. It can also be used for the preparation of the chorus and soloists for performances with orchestra. With regard to the anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, this version for solos, choir and organ by Torsten Sterzik originated to pave the Reformation Symphony's way into the church as well, restoring the text to Luther's chorale in the fourth movement and additionally including the third movement, its arioso solos being sung by a soprano and a tenor solo.

Bertram Luard-Selby (1853-1918): First SonataCharles Harford Lloyd (1849-1919): Sonata in D minorThe first sonata of Bertram Luard-Selby and the sonata of Charles Harford Lloyd are examples of works that demonstrate the transitional nature of the maturing English organ sonata. The portfolio approach towards compositions under one title, a sonata, that included sometimes significantly contrasting movements was common during the second half of the nineteenth century. It allowed composers to demonstrate their own compositional skill as well as highlight the tonal capabilities of the developing symphonic organ in England. The sonatas are playable on both small and large instruments and allow for creativity in registration. The technical difficulty varies between movements. As discussed in The Genesis and Development of an English Organ Sonata (2017), the English sonatas had an important pedagogical role jointly inherited from Mendelssohn’s very practical and popular approach to the instrument and the continued European legacy of the lesson-sonata tradition whereby in learning a piece you also learned the instrument and vice versa.

Organ Symphony No. 2 (2017) was written for and is dedicated to German organist Philip Hartmann. In all of my works that employ larger-scale forms (not just organ compositions), I am continually looking for different ways of providing the form and structure. My first organ symphony (2013) comprised three larger movements that charted a progression from dark to light. By contrast, this second organ symphony comprises 12 shorter movements that together build a larger structure out of varied emotional states. Although the movements are different in character, there are connections of harmony and motive across them. One goal behind this work is that it be suitable for effective performance on almost any organ, small or large. Most organ symphonies require a large instrument. By contrast, this piece can be played effectively on even a small organ with a limited number of stops (even a one manual organ with an octave pedal board). It can also be very effective on a large symphonic organ with many different colors and a huge tutti. Registration is left to the performer's discretion, and the organist is strongly encouraged to use the full extent of whatever resources are available. Matthias Weckmann, born in Niederdorla near Muhlhausen (Thuringia) in 1616 and died in Hamburg in 1674, was trained as a musician by Heinrich Schutz in Dresden among others. He worked as an organist in Dresden (Schlosskirche) and Hamburg (St. Jakobi). It is particularly for the Jakobi organ that he wrote his elaborate and virtuoso organ works. Our new edition in the renowned series 'Masters of the North German Organ School' faithfully transfers the works which survived in letter tablature, providing a reliably edited urtext. Volume 1 contains the cantus firmus-based works, 8 authentic verse cycles with 2-7 movements each in which chorale melodies such as 'Es ist das Heil uns kommen her', 'Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ)' or the 'Magnificat' are varied, as well as a cycle on 'Ach wir armen Sunder' attributed to Weckmann. Volume 2 proves him to a master of concertante organ music, containing 3 works with pedal (Fantasia, Fuga and Praeambulum in D) as well as several moderately difficult works to be played on manuals only (6 toccatas, 5 canzonas). Reliable standard edition of the music by one of the great (North) German organ masters.

The Concerto for organ, strings and percussion by Kay Johannsen, Kantor of the Stiftskirche in Stuttgart, is a valuable addition to the repertoire for organ and orchestra. It is a work composed to appeal to both performer and audience alike - with thrilling rhythmic sections as well as moments of great intimacy. The organ part, for a three manual instrument if possible, is shown to its best advantage in many and varied tonal colors, ranging from the most delicate solo registrations to powerful forte. The organ writing is demanding, but well within the capabilities of experienced organists. Precise registration suggestions are contained in the score. The string orchestra (minimum 4/4/3/3/1) is scored with sophistication, with solos for all instruments. The percussion is for two players - a part for timpani and one for other, readily available percussion instruments. By avoiding the use of wind and brass instruments, the work can also be performed where the tuning of the organ is not ideally suited to modern orchestral pitch. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1808500.

A heroic new organ solo by Samuel Adler, this substantial work was written for the dedication of the St. Cecilia organ at the Church of the Transfiguration in Orleans, MA. Adler has used the vivid fresco images of shofars in the church as inspiration for this work, which marks the opening of Rosh Hashana. The variety of trumpets and tubas on this organ also play a substantial part in the variety of sounds. An exciting fanfare and Allegro is followed by a beautiful chant-like section as contrast. A brilliant toccata on the opening material follows, bringing the work to a thunderous conclusion. This is a thrilling concert piece for a festive occasion.

These trios for organ are wonderfully versatile: they can be used as teaching pieces as well as works for the worship service or for concert. Mr. Martinson has stated in his preface that he conceived these short works as a 20th century equivalent of the Ten Trios of Josef Rheinberger. The pedal parts are graded in difficulty and can be extracted as pedal exercises. The pieces can be used as exercises in touch and registration on the mechanical action organ. The trios are remarkably varied in their melodic and rhythmic invention and use the full range of color on the organ. Great repertoire for organ students and concert organists.
