Anton Bruckner's Te Deum - a high point in the composer's output and one of the most important works of the sacred choral repertoire in the 19th century - is now available in a modern, scholarly edition. The Carus edition draws on both the two sources regarded as important, the autograph score and the first printed edition, with careful consideration given to variant readings. And so a music text has been prepared which reflects the composer's intentions as closely as possible. Great emphasis has been placed on a clear-to-read layout of the full score pages, as well as excellent legibility for the parts, which are available on sale. With current performance practice in mind, the clarinet parts are notated in B flat instead of A, corresponding with the first printed edition. The vocal score has been newly prepared to reflect current practical requirements. As an economical alternative, a chorus score is available. Bruckner's Te Deum is also available in carus music, the choir app. The app contains the music and a recording, as well as a coach to help with learning each choral part. In preparation: arrangement of the Te Deum for soli, choir, brass quintet and organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2719000.

Used as a place of worship for centuries, first by Christians and then by Muslims (from 1453), the Hagia Sophia (Istanbul) still amazes people from all over the world. Since 1934, it is a museum but more than that, the Hagia Sophia, a unique architectural work of monumental proportions in Christian Antiquity and the Middle Ages, is described as a mystical place. Monumental, yet mysterious, a 'miracle of space', a symbol, a sign. 'Sophia', the holy wisdom, accompanies us through the whole Bible history. The line and sound of Hagia Sophia are based on a symmetrical eight-note row (mode B) with the notes B, C sharp, D, E/F, G, A flat (G sharp), B flat (A sharp). Although the major-minor relations are removed, harmonic connections (colours) emerge nevertheless.

In this delightful musical calendar, John Dixon has provided 12 organ pieces, one for each month of the year. Each piece is based on a tune associated with a liturgical or cultural holiday. A number of the tunes are ones for which organ settings are less-frequently found helping to achieve the goal that every one of these pieces can find a useful place in worship or concert.

Beethoven described his Missa solemnis as his greatest work several times, a work which, coming from the heart, was to touch and move audiences. The surviving sources enable us to recognize how intensively and how long he worked on the composition in order to give what he felt was adequate expression to the text. In its length and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond typical liturgical settings, and the premiere took place, for good reason, in a concert hall. The chorus plays a key structural role in the work, and in the process has to master some extremely demanding sections. The leading Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich has produced an Urtext edition based on the available sources, and reflecting the latest state of scholarship. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4068900.

The pieces are meant as a kind of organ proper of Mass. Chorales and chants from the Catholic hymnbook are used for the music of the movements 'Halleluja', 'Offertorium' and 'Communio'. According to the spiritual content of the texts, there are both meditative and lively, virtuoso sections. The fourth movement, a toccata on the 'Ite missa est', ends the work with lavish organ sounds. The world premiere of the piece took place at the Cathedral of Salzburg in 1994 in the rare and demanding instrumentation for two organs.

French organist and composer Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was a student of César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor and worked as the organist for Notre-Dame de Paris from 1900 until his death, which took place on the organ bench at a recital. He composed many works for organ, among them six organ symphonies and a Messe solennelle for chorus and two organs. His six symphonies express the highs and lows of his personal life, and all are written in minor keys. Vierne's Organ Symphony No. 2, Op. 20, is in E minor. Movements: I. Allegro; II. Choral; III. Scherzo; IV. Cantabile; V. Final.

The cantata O God, what glut of care and pain BWV 58, which Bach subtitled Dialogus and wrote for the Sunday after New Year, limits itself accordingly to the dialog couple consisting of soprano and bass; further soloists or a choir are not required. In the framing movements, the dialog takes on the form of a chorale arrangement: the soprano presents a cantus firmus whose words are consolingly commented on by the bass. Both the expansive chorale arrangements leave room for an aria which is framed by two recitatives. The cantata was composed for the Sunday after New Year 1727, but the received form is from a subsequent performance that took place six or seven years later. For this performance, Bach not only expanded the instrumentation but also replaced an entire aria. Later, he assigned the cantata to his annual cycle of chorale cantatas, probably due to its high proportion of chorales; this Sunday was missing in that annual cycle as there was no Sunday between New Year and Epiphany in 1725. To the composer Enjott Schneider, Golgatha, the biblical place of crucification, is a symbol of both the transient and transcendental in human life. For his composition of the same name, he chose the form of a chaconne with introduction. Full of number symbolism, the work was premiered by the solo trombonist of the Hamburg NDR Symphony Orchestra and the organist of the Trier Cathedral to whom it has been dedicated.

The choral cantatas are Reger's most personal and most substantial contribution to one of the principal categories of Protestant church music, and they are only major works in this field by one of the foremost composers of his time. This is true despite the fact that Reger himself does not appear to have considered the cantatas to figure among his principal compositions, as he gave them no opus numbers. In contrast to the three other chorale cantatas of Reger which exist in a definitive form, there is no record of the place or date of the first performance of O wie selig, or indeed of any performance of it during the composer's lifetime. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5040500.

Of Josef Rheinberger's eighteen masses, five are for unaccompanied voices, four with accompaniment by a small instrumental ensemble and nine with organ. Among the last group the leicht ausfuhrbare (easy to perform) works take a special place: Considered by their composer as purely utility music, they achieved great popularity during his lifetime and soon became part of the standard repertory of small church choirs. Score available separately - see item CA.5006200.
