The Planets is cast as a single unit, consisting of seven movements, varying greatly in character, each of which describes a planet or a celestial body. The music for Sol is built out of the massive tutti-sound of the organ. The feeling is very much like the feeling of the sun shining down brightly onto you on a warm summer's day.

Commissioned for the 2017 Montréal Organ Festival, Concordia Salus: A Fantasy for Organ received its name from the motto of the city of Montréal, of which the Latin component translates as salvation through harmony. The work divides roughly into 3 sections. The first section introduces two main contrasting themes. The second section develops the main material through a series of gestures that have an improvisatory feeling--something akin to an extended cadenza. The final section of the piece recapitulates the primary thematic material through bold, triumphant, and fanfare-like statements, culminating in a tipple forte, full organ sound.Organ Duration: 8' Composed: 2017 Published by: Distributed Composer.

One of the first things that comes to one's mind when reading the title of Organ Symphony No. 9 'Pathetique' by Enjott Schneider is another work with this epithet: Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6. And that is no coincidence: The composer regards his organ work as an homage to this 'elder sister'. While Tchaikovsky, in a secret programme, made out his own life to be a struggle and long ordeal to the point of his suspected suicide, Enjott Schneider presents those hours as the ultimate tale of woe in which Jesus had well and truly become human, fatefully bearing the pain and misery of all people. 'Gethsemane', 'Geiselung: Ecce homo', 'Golgatha' and 'Grablegung': Maria Magdalena' are the names of the stages and movements. The Greek word 'pathos' means 'strong emotion, feeling, passion or suffering' - in Schneider's Organ Symphony No. 9, this comes true, musically, in his inner conflict, struggle, wrestling with his fate, cruelty of the crucifixion and deathly silence.

Uuno Klami (1900-1961) was born in Virolahti and studied in Helsinki, Paris and Vienna. While living in the capital city Helsinki, he always spent his summers in the original homestead in Virolahti. Klami is most known for his colourful orchestral works, but works for piano frame the different times of the composer's life nicely. The piano works are so joyous that transcribing from for organ is firmly based. Surumarssi (Trauermarsch) Op. 8 was composed when Klami was 16 years old, most likely in memory of his late mother. Pastoral A-flat major was composed in December 1919; I find it contains the feeling of Christmas. Barcarole Op. 5 is a French-influenced work. I often find myself thinking of a boat bobbing on waves, while I play this work. I believe these organ transcriptions bring many joyful moments in concerts as well as in other congregational use. And not only that: they can be used as pedagogic material as well.

The Partita, composed in 1971, is inscribed “For the Rt Hon. Edward Heath, M.P., Prime Ministerâ€. Its five movements enjoy the almost improvisatory freedom that is characteristic for Howells' writing, yet they are bound together by a kind of cyclic feeling engendered by a fairly consistent use of an original mode: it descends from C to C as follows: C, B, B flat, G, F sharp, E, E flat, C. The Partita exploits both the melodic and harmonic implications of the mode.

Organ Duration: 9' Composed: 2013 Published by: Zimbel Press A four movement suite for manuals only highly suitable for recital or service use. The four parts of Sentimentsare designed to show the elements of a person’s emotional outlook as his situation gradually changes from unexpected sadness to joy. Solemnity, the initial feeling of hopelessness moves to Tranquility as the despair lessens and is replaced by an inner peace, indicating acceptance. As time passes, the situation becomes more positive, and although our friend is still skeptical, he begins to feel Anticipation and hope. Then, the situation comes full circle, ending in happiness, and restoring his original emotional state of Mirth.

These two introspective pieces are an interpretation of the composer's feeling of peace while meditating at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. They are improvisatory in nature, with melodic shapes often reflective of plainsong. Extremely evocative and attractive. 12 pages Published by: Zimbel Press.

The Celestial Banquet, by Olivier Messiaen is one of his earliest compositions. Written for organ, this piece lasts 7 minutes because of its slow tempo that gives it a timeless feeling. This piece is quite challenging and would require an advanced technical level. Written in Octatonic mode, The Celestial Banquet used a theme that was transposed twice for less monotony. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer who was also passionate about ornithology. Inspired by Japanese music, he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity, its diatonic aspect, its harmony with limited transposition, its color and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong, including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on rhythm, color and ornithology' in 7 volumes.

...At a stroke this refreshed my jaded palate for organ music, after a long and fruitless period of truffle-hunting. I wanted to go on playing it over and over again (a rare feeling nowadays) and that only partly in order to get it right... juicy, neo-Vierne harmonies and exciting figuration, a truly beautiful clarinet melody with ravishing accompaniment in the quiet, slower middle section and a powerful final cadential passage. Every bar bespeaks superlative craftmanship, refined taste and not a little inspiration, while using entirely conventional and traditional means and without sacrifice of freshness or dignified popular appeal. There's not a lot of it about....--from review by Michael Bell (inOrganists' Review).

Lovely juxtaposition of J.S. Bach's harmonization of SCHMUCKE DICHSoul, Adorn Yourself with Gladness and W.A. Mozart's AVE VERUMJesu, Word Incarnate that clarifies the close kinship of text, spirit, and feeling of these two works.
