Anton Bruckner composed his first mass, the Mass in D minor, in 1864 in just four months. It was not ready in time for the Kaiser Franz Joseph I's birthday, as planned, but was first performed on 20 November at the Feast of St Cecilia in Linz Cathedral - with great success. The mass is one of the first works by Bruckner to be written in his characteristic symphonic style. It was revised several times and first published in 1892. This edition is based on a critical evaluation of all the relevant sources, and offers an improved musical text. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2709200.

Lemare's compositions are uneven in quality, but the best are still active in the repertoire. The Toccata di Concerto is certainly full of fireworks and has the capacity to show the abilities of a great Organ. The upper parts have plenty of French toccata style, but the theme in the pedals gives the piece substance, as does the romantic, chromatic interlude in the middle of the work.Organ virtuoso and composer Edwin Lemare was the world's highest-paid Organist at the height of his career in the early 1900's, drawing bravos from ctritics and the crowds who queued around the block to hear this most famous of Organists. After having served as a church Organist for a relativelyshort period, he began the life of a travelling recitalist, beginning with a hundred-recital tour of the USA and Canada in 1900, a career that continued until the stock market crash of 1929. Lemare was also virtuosic in his ability to transcribe great Orchestral works for the Organ, allowing audiences in those less urban times to hear works played live that they might have heard no other way.

In the creative output of the Bach pupil Johann Ludwig Krebs, arrangements of chorales and freely composed works for organ and a second instrument occupy an important position. They offer a glimpse into the so-called figural music of the 17th and 18th centuries, which has its roots in Protestant church music and constitutes a major aspect of music and music making in worship services. Until now, Kreb's arrangement of the chorale Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern existed only as a fragment. The editor of the present edition discovered the remainder of the arrangement, which was previously missing, and was able to complete the fragment. Thus, the complete chorale arrangement, composed wholly in the spirit of Bach, is now available for performance for the first time.

Carl Friedrich Christian Fasch's Mass in 16 parts is remarkable for more than its unusual scoring. Inspired by the Italian church music style of Orazio Benevoli, it was composed in 1783 for the Berliner Sing-Akademie, and revised by Fasch several times throughout his life in order to adapt the score to the vocal capabilities of his ensemble. The composer destroyed all earlier compositions, which probably contributed to the legendary fame which this mass has enjoyed since the 19th century. The mass was, however, only published in 1839 - around four decades after Fasch's death. The present edition is based on the version contained in the first printed edition. In addition to modern music notation, extensive performance materials (two choral scores, separate organ part) facilitate the rehearsal of this challenging work. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2708300.

Uuno Klami (1900-1961) was born in Virolahti and studied in Helsinki, Paris and Vienna. While living in the capital city Helsinki, he always spent his summers in the original homestead in Virolahti. Klami is most known for his colourful orchestral works, but works for piano frame the different times of the composer's life nicely. The piano works are so joyous that transcribing from for organ is firmly based. Surumarssi (Trauermarsch) Op. 8 was composed when Klami was 16 years old, most likely in memory of his late mother. Pastoral A-flat major was composed in December 1919; I find it contains the feeling of Christmas. Barcarole Op. 5 is a French-influenced work. I often find myself thinking of a boat bobbing on waves, while I play this work. I believe these organ transcriptions bring many joyful moments in concerts as well as in other congregational use. And not only that: they can be used as pedagogic material as well.

A well-known teacher and compiler of Stainer & Bell's Opera Gala series, John Norris has created Wedding Gala with an ear to giving church organists a mix of favourites and exciting discoveries to brighten the routine of music for the service of holy matrimony. No album would be complete without the traditional wedding music of Mendelssohn and Wagner, and it can be found here in this collection alongside other classics of the wedding repertoire by Jeremiah Clarke, Bach and Handel. But there's also a thoroughly contemporary leavening, with arrangements of Sydney Carter's One More Step and Lord of the Dance, both firm favourites, plus Musorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Charpentier's Prelude, adding a note of splendour. But the real bonus is for lovers of English music, with Elgar's Chanson de Matin and 'The Call' from the Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams, seldom found in comparable collections. And there's also a rare new discovery: the ravishing Chosen Tune by Herbert Howells, transcribed from his Three Pieces for violin and piano, Op. 28, and available as an organ piece for the first time. Each piece is comprehensively registered by the arranger, and the collection as a whole will be welcomed by all organists of intermediate standard as a source of new material not only for liturgical use but also for recitals.

The choral cantatas are Reger's most personal and most substantial contribution to one of the principal categories of Protestant church music, and they are only major works in this field by one of the foremost composers of his time. This is true despite the fact that Reger himself does not appear to have considered the cantatas to figure among his principal compositions, as he gave them no opus numbers. In contrast to the three other chorale cantatas of Reger which exist in a definitive form, there is no record of the place or date of the first performance of O wie selig, or indeed of any performance of it during the composer's lifetime. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5040500.

Vintersalme-Musik (1980) - Choral prelude for Organ. Orig. title: Vintersalme.
Programme note: When in 1975 I had finished composing my 3rd Symphony (begun in 1973), I wrote three simple melodies for two psalm texts by Ole Sarvig “The Year” and “Choral Hymn”. One of these was later included in the Danish Hymnbook under the title “Året – Som året går” (The Year). These three “Sarvig tunes” were derived from the same material as the second movement of the symphony and could be harmonized together in several different temporelationships at the same time - like fractals. This inspired me to write several choral and instrumental works in the following decade based on these melodies: for instance “Frost Psalm”, “Winter Cantata”, “Cycles”, “Cantica” and this piece for organ, all coloured by the Nordic and mythic poem by Sarvig, the beginning of which goes: The passing year will pass its deep So shall our mind reach winter´s sleep. And as the tree stands leafles, bare, Is winter´s realms: our minds aware. Per Nørgård

French organist and composer Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was a student of César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor and worked as the organist for Notre-Dame de Paris from 1900 until his death, which took place on the organ bench at a recital. He composed many works for organ, among them six organ symphonies and a Messe solennelle for chorus and two organs. His six symphonies express the highs and lows of his personal life, and all are written in minor keys. Vierne's Organ Symphony No. 2, Op. 20, is in E minor. Movements: I. Allegro; II. Choral; III. Scherzo; IV. Cantabile; V. Final.

,,Bach spielen auf der Orgel (Playing Bach on the Organ) - the eagerly anticipated and logical addition to the new ten-volume edition of Bach's organ works - addresses organists of various skills and interests. It is not a scientific textbook focusing on a comprehensive presentation of the sources; it rather aims to make the fascinating cosmos of Bach's organ compositions accessible and ignite the passion, which is essential for an inspired interpretation. In his capacity as both a concert organist and a Bach researcher, Jean-Claude Zehnder is, like no other, apt to give the reader an understanding of the diverse aspects of playing Bach in a scientifically founded and yet vivid and exciting way. From Bach's organs and questions with regard to the registration practice of his time, via performance-technical aspects to thoughts on text reference, proportions and symbolism, no important subject has been left out. Questions of interpretation are discussed by reference to selected works and round off the compact presentation. A bibliography allows further own research.

Radegund Variations (2017) was written for and is dedicated to Hartmut Siebmanns, cantor and organist in Possneck, in the Thuringia region of Germany. This work was inspired by the life of Radegund (ca. 520-587), who was a Thuringian princess (and later Frankish queen) most famous for founding the Abbey of the Holy Cross in Poitiers, France. The piece begins with an original theme: its contemporary view of ancient modality represents looking back from the present time into Radegund's era. The theme is followed by six contrasting variations, inspiration for which are drawn from events in Radegund's life: her marriage and joining the Frankish court (1st variation); her flight from the court (after the murder of her brother) to seek protection from the church (2nd variation); her devotion to the needy (3rd variation); her friendship with the poet Venantius Fortunatus and her commissioning of his sacred poem Vexilla Regis (4th variation); her gifts of healing (5th variation); and the building of the abbey (6th variation). Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 11' Composed: 2017 Published by: Zimbel Press.

The B.A.C.H. motif has been known and used for centuries, but enjoyed a great revival in the late 19th century as composers paid homage to the composer J.S. Bach. It derives from the German nomenclature, and is expressed in standard notation as Bb-A-C-B.
The Fantasia And Fugue On B.A.C.H. is one of the most famous Organ works of Franz Liszt (1811-1886). The piece was intended for the inauguration of the famous Ladegast Organ at Merseburg Cathedral, but sadly, it wasn't finished in time. Liszt then revised the work in 1870 and produced the version that survives today. A well-loved piece, no organist's library iscomplete without it.
