Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Magnificat H 78 was composed around 1690 for the Jesuits in Paris. No less than ten works by the composer, in differing vocal and instrumental scoring and form comprise this genre. In the present Magnificat H 78 for five voices (in which alto and bass also have solo roles), two flutes, strings and basso continuo, each of the individual movements contains its own expressive profile in sound. Kuhnau's Magnificat in C major is - apart from his Biblical Sonatas - considered to be his most ambitious and best known work. However, as recent research has revealed, there are indeed many other large-scale works among his oeuvre which are largely presumed lost today, apart from those that were published as first editions. Until now, only insufficient or erroneous editions of the Magnificat have been available, a piano reduction has not been available at all. Beyond that, editor David Erler has succeeded in tracking down new evidence on the authorship of four Laudes (insertion movements for performances over Christmas) and to carry out their altogether new placement in the main work. He was able to prove that Bach's Magnificat directly succeeded Kuhnaus's work and that the use of such Laudes was common in Leipzig's parish churches and beyond.

At less than 20 years of age, the youngest son of the Leipzig cantor of St. Thomas, Johann Sebastian Bach, withdrew from the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: Johann Christian Bach went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and composed mainly Latin church music between 1757 and 1760. His great successes with operas for Turin, Milan and Naples from 1761 onwards led him all the way to London. Bach's church music comprises a number of vespers compositions, some of them large-scale, including this Magnificat a 4 (1760) for soloists, choir and orchestra. The very diversified work gets its additional attraction from distinctively led oboes and horns.

Antiphon on Magnificat for Maundy Thursday, Antiphon on Magnificat for Good Friday, Antiphon on Magnificat for Holy SaturdayThis major work for organ is dedicated to the memory of the beloved church musician Sam Batt Owens, and certainly reflects his warmth of personality. The chants are developed in a subtle manner throughout the three parts and the phrases are elegant. A good legato technique will be required in the hands, while the pedal parts are only moderately difficult. Stearns gives plenty of opportunity for varied colors in these movements, and the harmonies are derived from the chant in a most satisfying way. This Triptych would also be appropriate for concert use.
