Sonatina No. 2 (2013) is dedicated to Robert Behrman. The opening toccata consists of bouncy and vibrant music surrounding a lyric chorale. The title of the second movement, Sharagan, refers to a style of monodic hymn in the Armenian Orthodox Church. The third movement is a gigue indebted to Buxtehude, though with a contemporary harmonic flavor. Sonatina No. 3 (2014) is dedicated to Johan-Magnus Sjoberg. The opening movement is an ostinato (quasi-passacaglia) with a heavily syncopated theme. The second movement, Dirge, is quiet and expressive, with a rising scalar figure in the bass that increases in speed. The final movement is a dancing toccatina with a bit of a scherzando character. (Both of these sonatinas can be played with manuals only. Optional pedal suggestions are provided in a few places.) Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) ranks among the major German organ composers of the 20th century, being an excellent organist himself. Many of his more than 100 organ works deal with themes of the Gregorian chorale. The chorale's modal diatonicism which is freer and different than the later major-minor tonality establishes a perfect symbiosis with the free tonality of the contemporary composer. In the five-movement chorale partita, the more than 1,000 years old Mixolydian Whitsun Sequence of Hrabanus Maurus (9th century) is used in an imaginative and formally varied way: as a virtuoso toccata, in the second movement 'ostinato' as a strict trio setting over a seven-bar ostinato in the pedal, as a capriciously playful 'bicinium', and as a meditative, harmonically appealing 'arioso'. The fifth movement (fantasia ricercare) displays brilliant full-handed chords and virtuoso passages as well as a fugato in the middle section. A rewarding concert piece for Whitsun, with an excellent possibility of virtuoso interpretation and colourful registration.

Sein Einfallsreichtum und seine flussige Kompositionstechnik beeinflussten die Entwicklung der Orgelfuge in ahnlicher Weise, wie Mendelssohn dieses fur die Klavierfuge bewirkt hatte. Im Zeitraum des Vierteljahrhunderts, in dem Guilmant seine Orgelsonaten schuf, vollzogen sich im Bereich der instrumentalen Spieltechnik bedeutende Veranderungen. An Spieler und Instrument wurden nun grossere Anforderungen gestellt.

The organ is the instrument on which the young Giacomo Puccini began his career as a musician. Through the rediscovery of a considerable number of hand-written pieces, which he composed after 1870 as part of his duties as organist in the churches of Lucca, several primary sources are now available. These give an insight into the beginnings of his musical activities which have only been known about from anecdotes from his first biographers until now. Puccini's organ repertoire includes works which were typical for liturgical organ music at that time: sonatas for the main sections of the mass, versets which were substituted for Gregorian chant, marches, which were played after the mass (exceptionally even waltzes), and even a pastorale for Christmas time. This music was written with the sound of instruments made in Tuscany in mind. These have just one manual, a 8 foot Principale register and a small pedalboard always coupled to the manual. In addition there were several solo stops divided into bass and soprano.Puccini contributed with originality to the renewal of Italian organ practice, which began in his day to discard its operatic style in favor of a style more suited to the liturgy.
