The newly engraved scores and parts for the six op. 4 organ concertos follow the revised volume of the Handel Complete Edition edited by Terence Best and William Gudger [BA 8340 / BA 8341-BA 8346].The new scores and orchestral parts are free from the overediting found in other editions available today. Since January 2008, the first scholarly, critical edition of the works of Max Reger (RWA) is being produced at the Max-Reger-Institute, Karlsruhe. Its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the methods of editorial practice. It comprises three areas of Reger's compositional output: Organ works, Lieder and choruses and, for the first time, Max Reger's arrangements of works by other composers. To begin the series, the first seven volumes have been published and contain the organ works, which have been eagerly awaited by many. The Max-Reger-Institut (MRI), located in Karlsruhe, Germany, has initiated the first ever scholarly-critical edition of works by Max Reger. The Reger-Werkausgabe (RWA) is sponsored by the Mainzer Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur and with its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the editorial techniques. The seventh and final volume in the series of organ works includes, in chronological order, the organ pieces Max Reger composed in 1904 and 1906 in Munich, in 1912 in Berchtesgaden, in 1913 in Kolberg, and in 1915 to 1916 in Jena.

The organ is the instrument on which the young Giacomo Puccini began his career as a musician. Through the rediscovery of a considerable number of hand-written pieces, which he composed after 1870 as part of his duties as organist in the churches of Lucca, several primary sources are now available. These give an insight into the beginnings of his musical activities which have only been known about from anecdotes from his first biographers until now. Puccini's organ repertoire includes works which were typical for liturgical organ music at that time: sonatas for the main sections of the mass, versets which were substituted for Gregorian chant, marches, which were played after the mass (exceptionally even waltzes), and even a pastorale for Christmas time. This music was written with the sound of instruments made in Tuscany in mind. These have just one manual, a 8 foot Principale register and a small pedalboard always coupled to the manual. In addition there were several solo stops divided into bass and soprano.Puccini contributed with originality to the renewal of Italian organ practice, which began in his day to discard its operatic style in favor of a style more suited to the liturgy.

The fourth volume of the section of the Reger Edition devoted to his organ works comprises, in chronological order, the chorale preludes composed between October 1893 and November 1914 in Wiesbaden, Weiden, Munich, Leipzig, and Meiningen. The composition of chorale preludes accompanied Reger throughout his entire career, even though they were composed primarily in the years from 1900 to 1902 and 1914 (Opus 135a). As almost no other composer at the turn of the century, he dedicated himself to the chorale prelude, composing around 100 works in this genre. This volume includes organ works based on chorales surviving in various sources. Some of these works were not previously included in theNew Bach Editioneither for reasons of doubtful authenticity or because they were unknown until now. Two pieces from this repertoire - the two arrangements ofWie schon leuchtet der MorgensternBWV 739 and 764 - stem from one of Bach's autograph manuscripts. They had been omitted until recently because of doubts of authenticity.

,,Bach spielen auf der Orgel (Playing Bach on the Organ) - the eagerly anticipated and logical addition to the new ten-volume edition of Bach's organ works - addresses organists of various skills and interests. It is not a scientific textbook focusing on a comprehensive presentation of the sources; it rather aims to make the fascinating cosmos of Bach's organ compositions accessible and ignite the passion, which is essential for an inspired interpretation. In his capacity as both a concert organist and a Bach researcher, Jean-Claude Zehnder is, like no other, apt to give the reader an understanding of the diverse aspects of playing Bach in a scientifically founded and yet vivid and exciting way. From Bach's organs and questions with regard to the registration practice of his time, via performance-technical aspects to thoughts on text reference, proportions and symbolism, no important subject has been left out. Questions of interpretation are discussed by reference to selected works and round off the compact presentation. A bibliography allows further own research.

Four Voluntaries For Organ by Robert Groves.
Following the practice adopted in several of Groves' books of Hymn Tune Preludes, each of these pieces has been designed so that it can be played on a small two-manual Organ with pedals, or quite easily on a manual only, with or without pedals. Registration of a simple nature has been given, and this may, of course, be varied at the player's wish.

Particularly during the early 1740s, Johann Sebastian Bach concentrated intensely on studying the compositional technique of strict vocal polyphony. As an inspiration, he studied the works of older masters, copying them and, for the most part, performing them as well. A set of single parts for the Missa canonica by Francesco Gasparini in an instrumentation by Bach were recently discovered in the collection of the former Ephoralbibliothek Weissenfels; some of the parts are in Bach's own handwriting. Gasparini was esteemed in Germany particularly as a master of elaborate counterpoint and audacious harmonic writing. Bach amended the music text with a view to certain aspects of performance practice, clearly following a very specific concept of sound organization. His interest in strict counterpoint was paralleled by a tangible re-orientation in Bach's own compositional technique at the beginning of the 1740s. Francesco Gasparini's Missa canonica therefore served as a practical model for the highly developed art of canon writing and the strict polyphony in Bach's late works, as we encounter them, for example, in the B minor Mass.

Jan Rybarskis Fantasia for Organ is a work of a great emotional impact. Its romantic dramaturgy leads the listener into the state of deep reflections. The work is monumental; its structure resembles a one-part sonata with a fugue in the middle fragment. The arrangement requires organs with minimum 16-18 voices in two manuals. Despite fast passages and at times complicated harmony that require a lot of practice, the work is played with comfort. The author, as an organist-practitioner, uses difficult technical elements that he controls in a perfect manner. The proportion of the traditional and modern harmonics is ideal, which means it perfectly corresponds to the dramaturgy of the work. The main formative element is the rhythm that - as the author claims himself - inspires, opens both the performer and the listener to the experience. The structure of the Fantasia brings connotations to the course of a human life, with a film story that apparently is different for everyone, but conveys one truth common to all people: in order to overcome difficulties, you need to trust God.
