hier preisen auf der Erd offers a selection of some of the multi-faceted and highly original forms found among the chorale prelude of the romantic era.
ISBN 9790004180433. 9 x 12 inches.
The spotlight is not on Brahms, Reger and Karg-Elert, but on the romantic organ composers Otto Dienel, Theophil Forchhammer, Max Gulbins, Otto Heinermann, Karl Hoyer, Wilhelm Kienzl, Emil Magnus, Karl Piutti and many others whose works have recently begun to attract greater attention. The idea of romanticism is extended into the 20th century by the inclusion of certain other composers as well. hier preisen auf der Erd illustrates a particularly fruitful period in the history of organ music while also expanding the four-volume collection in Ewigkeit dich loben, which was unable to take certain interesting rediscoveries into account at the time of compilation.hier preisen auf der Erd offers a selection of some of the multi-faceted and highly original forms found among the chorale prelude of the romantic era. Awarded the German Music Edition Prize 1998.

As part of the Hannenheim Edition, the pianist Moritz Ernst also presents, in addition to the anthology of all the surviving piano sonatas of Arnold Schoenberg's master-class pupil, the edition of Hannenheim's two previously known organ works. The early Phantasieis imbued with a late Romantic harmony interspersed with chromaticisms, which reveal influences of Wagner and Strauss, but also of French organ romanticism. More typical of Hannenheim's personal style is the classical three-movement Sonata with its all-pervading serial technique; the last movement presents itself as an extensive passacaglia with 10 variations and is steeped in complex polyphony.

Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) studied with Heinrich Lemacher and Walter Braunfels and became Professor of Composition and Music Theory at the Academy of Music in Cologne. From the end of the 1920s he made an important contribution to the new stylistic developments in organ music His smaller-scale compositions in particular, such as the Preambles and Interludes (1954) or the Little Preludes and Intermezzos (1932, ED 2221) point in new directions: the constraints of form have evidently been helpful in the process of breaking away from Romanticism; clarity and formal precision take the place of monumental grandeur of form. Suitable for concert or liturgical performance.

This fantasia for organ was composed in 2019. The composition is based on a melody attributed to the French composer Louis Bourgeois (approx. 1510–1560) which is one of the most well-known melodies in the Christian musical tradition. It has also been sung to various other texts, such as Lutheran chorales. In Bach’s work, the melody appears in the cantata “Lord God, we praise Thee all of us†BWV 130.The composer has retained the style of French Romanticism. The character of the work corresponds to the content of the text and culminates in a festive finale. This music is suitable for many church music occasions.

This anthology is an engrossing introduction to the organ composer Theophil Forchhammer and, with its 35 works, provides an ideal cross-section of his oeuvre. There are 18 free pieces in which Forchhammer, a contemporary of Reger, manifests his Romantic spirit; and 17 chorale settings which this new edition presents in commonly encountered keys and which do not coincide with Forchhammer's 11 chorale settings contained in hier preisen auf der Erd (EB 8628/29). A rarity - and first edition! - is the Orgelweihe (Organ Consecration) in which Forchhammer incorporates no fewer than 13 melodies from Advent to Pentecost.

Gerard Bunk worked in Dortmund and was highly esteemed as a composer and organist by such illustrious contemporaries as Sigfrid Karg-Elert, Max Reger and Albert Schweitzer. His works in the late-romantic vein fell into oblivion in the 1930s with the rise of the Baroque-oriented organ movement. This edition, with commentaries by Jan Bocker, invites us to discover three of Bunk's masterpieces.

For the first time a completely self-contained organ repertoire is presented which originated in the churches of northern Germany after 1780, and yet keeping up the musical traditions of the 17th century. Thus, a many-facetted, more recent organ music from northwestern middle Europe is now accessible. Focal points of the music clearly are church songs and counterpoint; a fascinating element is the rich chromaticism. The pieces are of medium difficulty, practical for liturgical or concert use.

The organ works by Gregor Lehr (1906–1986), cathedral organist and master of music at the cathedral in Worms, were primarily intended for use in church services: these pieces were performed by the composer himself at church services in Worms at the cathedral of St Peter and at the church of St Paul, as well as in church concerts. Until now these musical scores were only accessible to a few former pupils of Lehr. These pieces composed in late Romantic style consist mainly of chorale preludes, along with some variations, interludes or postludes and chorale fantasias.

A key work in Reger's organ production from the time of its first publication in 1902 up to today, the famous F-minor Passacaglia from Op. 63 has cast its spell on generations of organ lovers. The dark bass strides quietly through the depths, persistently and secretly like time itself; a ghostly breath murmurs about the heights and rustles through light leaves; and from within emerges a voice which rises and falls in a seemingly aimless manner, and which speaks more than it sings... (Gustav-Robert Tornow on the 8th variation of the Passacaglia in his 1907 introduction to the work).
