It is no coincidence that the Toccata from Widor's Vth Organ Symphony is his best-known composition. Who can resist its thrilling verve? Not only this, but also the other movements of this unique work of the organ repertoire win you over immediately - the first with its march-like, majestic, much-varied theme; the second with its wonderfully elegiac oboe melody, flowing along over staccato sixteenth notes; and the two slow movements, of which the melancholy, almost static Adagio forms the greatest contrast imaginable to the following triumphal Toccata. The Carus Urtext edition is based on the Paris edition of 1928/29, the last one to be published during Widor's lifetime. The corrections which the composer made after the publication of this edition have also been taken into consideration. As well as this, earlier editions have been consulted for comparison to clarify individual variant readings. Editorial suggestions on the performance of individual passages complete the new edition. Great organ works: Series A: - Symphony II op. 13 no. 2 - Symphony IV op. 13 no. 4 - Symphony V op. 42 no. 1 - Symphony VI op. 42 no. 2 - Symphony Romane op. 73 in preparation Subscription offer for Series A: 20% discount off the retail price.

Widor's early organ symphonies op. 13 have a quite special character because of their suite-like structure. The six-movement Symphony II also combines different types of movement in an unusual way; for example, it includes a Praeludium Circulare, which explores all the twelve keys, a Salve Regina based on the Gregorian antiphon of the same name, and a grand Toccata as the Finale, an interesting precursor of the famous Toccata from the 5th Symphony. Widor's early organ symphonies op. 13 have a quite special character because of their suite-like structure. And so the 4th Symphony delightfully combines classical forms such as toccata and fugue with Romantic character pieces. It includes the well-known Andante cantabile, which is one of the composer's most beautiful slow movements. The Carus edition is based on the last edition published during Widor's lifetime, issued Paris 1929. Corrections made by the composer after the edition of 1929 was published have been taken into consideration. In addition, for purposes of clarification, earlier print runs were consulted. Editorial suggestions on the performance of individual passages complete the edition.

With his organ symphonies, the composer Enjott Schneider (born 1950) from Munich has been a profound sensation in recent years and seen world premieres at major European organ events. The Organ Symphony No. 6 'Te Deum' (premiered at Bruckner's St. Florian above Bruckner's tomb in 2008 and recorded there on CD) adopts the five-part structure and several motifs from Bruckner's 'Te Deum', thus becoming a forceful compact work pervaded by the Gotteslob. 1: 'Te Deum' is based on Bruckner's original figuration of fifths and eighths which is connected with the Latin Te Deum; 2: 'Te Ergo' is a 'preghiera' with pleading and praying gestures; 3: 'Aeterna fac' is an extremely virtuoso perpetuum mobile; 4: 'Salvum Fac' a basso ostinato and finally 5: 'In te, Domine speravi' a toccata which, after taking many detours, inevitably leads to the C major.

Charles Villiers Stanford was an Irish composer, music teacher, and conductor. Stanford composed a substantial number of concert works, including seven symphonies, but his best-remembered pieces are his choral works for church performance, chiefly composed in the Anglican tradition. Admitted to Queens College, Cambridge with an Organ scholarship Stanford had written a substantial number of compositions, including vocal music, both sacred and secular, and orchestral works before getting involved with the university's Musical Society. While still an undergraduate, Stanford was appointed organist of Trinity College, Cambridge.
Part of the'Four Intermezzi Op. 189' Intermezzo On An Irish Air for Organ is based on the melody of the well-known 'Londonderry Air'. The traditional Irish tune was first collected in the mid 19th century by Jane Ross, and is recognised all around the world by the Irish Diaspora. Duration ca. 6:20.

French organist and composer, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) is also remembered as a significant pedagogue. However, his prominence within the organ repertoire remains absolute with sublime works, including his Passion Symphony. Dupré studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor, where he won prizes for piano, organ and fugue, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He was a famous organ virtuoso and was able to perform the entire works composed for the instrument by J. S. Bach from memory. Dupré's Op. 23, the Passion Symphony for Organ is made up of four movements depicting the life of Christ; 1) The World awaiting the Saviour, 2) Nativity, 3) Crucifixion, and 4) Resurrection. All of the movements display a high degree of virtuosic technique and musical integrity. Dupré's compositions and didactic works remain important to organists today and his Passion Symphony is no exception.

As its title indcates, this is a miniature symphony, its structure compacted as much as possible. The classical form is respected, dwon to the smallest details, so that the various development sections lead to a recapitulation of the two themes and to a more asservative conclusion. Throughout the work the style is extremely sparse and straightforward. The nostalgia expressed by the theme of the second movement leads us towards effects of perspective that modify the light thrown on the melody, at first distand and soon more insistent, more dominant, before dying away in the gentle mist. The third movement is somewhat facetious and sly. Despite its brilliantly luminous progress, the ending is nostalgic, whimsical and, once more, humorous.

Mendelssohn describes to his friend Klingemann the 1840 work as a 'symphony for chorus and orchestra'... First three symphonic movements, to which 12 choral- and solo- movements are appendaged; the words from the Psalms, and indeed all pieces, vocal and instrumental, are composed in the words 'Everything which has breath, Praise the Lord'; one understands by this that first the instruments give praise in their own way, and then the chorus and the individual voices. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4007600.
