The organ is the instrument on which the young Giacomo Puccini began his career as a musician. Through the rediscovery of a considerable number of hand-written pieces, which he composed after 1870 as part of his duties as organist in the churches of Lucca, several primary sources are now available. These give an insight into the beginnings of his musical activities which have only been known about from anecdotes from his first biographers until now. Puccini's organ repertoire includes works which were typical for liturgical organ music at that time: sonatas for the main sections of the mass, versets which were substituted for Gregorian chant, marches, which were played after the mass (exceptionally even waltzes), and even a pastorale for Christmas time. This music was written with the sound of instruments made in Tuscany in mind. These have just one manual, a 8 foot Principale register and a small pedalboard always coupled to the manual. In addition there were several solo stops divided into bass and soprano.Puccini contributed with originality to the renewal of Italian organ practice, which began in his day to discard its operatic style in favor of a style more suited to the liturgy.

Anton Bruckner composed his first mass, the Mass in D minor, in 1864 in just four months. It was not ready in time for the Kaiser Franz Joseph I's birthday, as planned, but was first performed on 20 November at the Feast of St Cecilia in Linz Cathedral - with great success. The mass is one of the first works by Bruckner to be written in his characteristic symphonic style. It was revised several times and first published in 1892. This edition is based on a critical evaluation of all the relevant sources, and offers an improved musical text. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2709200.

Man that is born of woman hath but a short time to live is one of the central biblical texts dealing with the transitoriness of human existence. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. For a performance this piece could easily be combined with the Salve Regina by Pietro Cassati (Carus 27.703) from the Vienna series. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2770500.

The cantata is one of the few surviving vocal works which Wilhelm Friedemann Bach composed during the eighteen years which he spent as organist and director of music at the Marktkirche in Halle (1746-1764). This cantata, published here for the first time in more than 250 years, was written to introduce the autumn sermons in 1752. A musically and technically demanding composition, it consists of two substantial choral movements, partly concertante and partly polyphonic, based on two biblical utterances. They surround a sensitive, while at the same time strictly contrapuntal, duet for soprano and alto with basso continuo in which God's sweet teaching for the soul is described as the true manna of the faithful, forming a link with the sermons which are to follow. In the compactness of the musical construction and its intensity of expression W. F. Bach was clearly following in the footsteps of his father in this work. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3207600.

Composer's Note:
In writing these pieces I had in mind certain difficulties which worry most organists from time to time; and in order to combine, as it were, business with pleasure I thought it worthwhile to concentrate upon one aspect of organ technique in each piece, even at the risk of making them a little more difficult than others in this series.
In Procession the main difficulty lies in the pedals Arabesque, on the other hand could hardly have had a simpler pedal part: its object is to exercise the left hand in producing a smooth, running semi-quaver pattern Pageant with its cross-rhythms, is designed to produce well-disciplinedhands and feet that can, when required, work in conflicting rhythms.
I have kept the registration schemes as simple and straightforward as possible.

This volume presents 64 Pastorale compositions for organ (harpsichord/pianoforte) of the 18th century from Germany, Bohemia, Austria and South Tyrol. Charming melodies shaped by natural notes, bordoun basses, a lyrical-cheerful or sensitive tone - these are some of the common characteristics of the works in this collection. Several of them are connected to the custom of the Kindlwiegen or cradle song. Those in search of new discoveries will also find a number of first editions here. Almost all of the pieces can be played manualiter and range from easy to moderate level of difficulty. Together, both Pastorale volumes display an impressive kaleidoscope of the different national characteristics of the pastorale and offer a rich repertoire for organists, not only at Christmas time.

Debussy's Danse (Tarantelle styrienne), originally for piano and orchestrated by Ravel, is also extremely well suited to performance on the organ. This is shown in this arrangement which has been successfully performed in concerts in several countries by renowned organists. It is now being published in time for the Debussy anniversary year in 2018. The arrangement shows this powerful and spirited Danse, with its typical syncopated rhythms, to its best advantage. The great range of colors offers performers plenty of opportunity for artistic display. The registration markings are intended as suggestions and can easily be adapted to suit different instruments.

The fourth volume of the section of the Reger Edition devoted to his organ works comprises, in chronological order, the chorale preludes composed between October 1893 and November 1914 in Wiesbaden, Weiden, Munich, Leipzig, and Meiningen. The composition of chorale preludes accompanied Reger throughout his entire career, even though they were composed primarily in the years from 1900 to 1902 and 1914 (Opus 135a). As almost no other composer at the turn of the century, he dedicated himself to the chorale prelude, composing around 100 works in this genre. Since January 2008, the first scholarly, critical edition of the works of Max Reger (RWA) is being produced at the Max-Reger-Institute, Karlsruhe. Its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the methods of editorial practice. It comprises three areas of Reger's compositional output: Organ works, Lieder and choruses and, for the first time, Max Reger's arrangements of works by other composers. To begin the series, the first seven volumes have been published and contain the organ works, which have been eagerly awaited by many.

Fantasy-Variations on Two Themes (2017) for organ was written for Heinrich Christensen in celebration of his significant 2017 birthday. The musical material for the work comprises two different themes. The first is a short melody by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). (It was a sketch originally intended for inclusion in, but ultimately left out of, Nielsen's late organ work 29 Little Preludes.) This theme represents Heinrich's native Denmark. The second theme is the American folk-gospel hymn Angel Band. This theme represents Heinrich's adopted American homeland. It serves also as a remembrance of our dear mutual friend Harry Lyn Huff (1952-2016), for whom the tune was a particular favorite. Both these themes are developed freely in a set of alternating fantasy-variations. The opening variation begins with a dramatic pedal solo before quoting both themes. The second variation is a lyric setting based on the Nielsen melody. The third is a jubilant hornpipe on Angel Band. The fourth is an aria on a transformation of the Nielsen melody. The fifth is a gigue-toccata on Angel Band. The sixth is an atmospheric contemplation: lush chords in the manuals move slowly and hint at Angel Band while the Nielsen melody is heard for the first time in its complete original form on a high pedal stop. The seventh and final variation begins with a brief evocation of the harmonies of the late Daniel Pinkham (a mentor to both Heinrich and me) before going on to return dramatically and jubilantly to the opening music, bringing together both themes again in a bold conclusion. Please note: this edition has nothing to do with Arnold Schonberg! The Schonberg in question is a town near Kronberg in Germany's hilly Taunus region. Around the turn of the last century, the organist Ludwig Sauer (1861-1940) wanted to have a new organ built at his church there and came up with a novel way to finance it: he asked a number of composers to donate a musical piece. He eventually obtained 36 (!) pieces which he grouped together in the Organ Album for the Benefit of the New Organ in Schonberg by L. Sauer and had published in 1900 by Breitkopf & Hartel. Deserving particular mention is Max Reger's popular Introduction and Passacaglia in D minor, which was printed for the first time in that collection and which no doubt helped Sauer's project make organ history. The Schonberger Orgelalbum contains both free pieces and works based on chorales. Thanks to the brevity of the pieces, the book is ideal for use in teaching and in the religious service..

Vintersalme-Musik (1980) - Choral prelude for Organ. Orig. title: Vintersalme.
Programme note: When in 1975 I had finished composing my 3rd Symphony (begun in 1973), I wrote three simple melodies for two psalm texts by Ole Sarvig “The Year” and “Choral Hymn”. One of these was later included in the Danish Hymnbook under the title “Året – Som året går” (The Year). These three “Sarvig tunes” were derived from the same material as the second movement of the symphony and could be harmonized together in several different temporelationships at the same time - like fractals. This inspired me to write several choral and instrumental works in the following decade based on these melodies: for instance “Frost Psalm”, “Winter Cantata”, “Cycles”, “Cantica” and this piece for organ, all coloured by the Nordic and mythic poem by Sarvig, the beginning of which goes: The passing year will pass its deep So shall our mind reach winter´s sleep. And as the tree stands leafles, bare, Is winter´s realms: our minds aware. Per Nørgård

The seven chorale fantasias by Max Reger are among the most important of organ repertoire ? masterpieces blending chorale melody and programmatic music based on the text of the chorales.
Published on the occasion of the composer's 150th birthday, this fundamentally revised Urtext edition, in two volumes, is edited by the internationally renowned organist and Leipzig professor of organ Martin Schmeding.
As one of the most influential Reger interpreters, Schmeding not only includes the latest research, but also addresses the need for a contemporary interpretation of the chorale fantasias on modern organs. The edition includes all the original dynamic and agogic indications (including continuation lines to cresc., etc., which are missing in many modern editions), as well as all the original registration and manual indications.
Martin Schmeding's new edition provides for the first time an original musical text that combines the requirements of a modern Urtext edition with the demands of a practical edition.

During the intensive study of Johann Sebastian Bach's Musical Offering for the creation of a commissioned composition for wind trio, I had the idea of writing a larger organ work on the Royal Theme at the same time. This is how the Three Ricercare came into being. They are multi-part fantasies for organ, which - connected by the frequently transformed thematic material of the Musical Offering and the manifoldly reshaped B-A-C-H motif - alternate between free, rapsodic parts on the one hand and strictly structured parts on the other. For my 60th birthday, W. E. v. Lewinski wrote an appreciation under the title: Music in the span between constraint and freedom. This formulation aptly characterizes the new organ work. Charles Gounod composed this Requiem under the impact of the death of his four-year-old grandson, Maurice. According to information handed down, while finishing the details of this work he was overtaken by death. It was published posthumously in various constellations by his pupil, Henri Busser, but the only complete version from the pen of Gounod is the version for large orchestra, which is published here for the first time in a critical edition. Gounod's Requiem, unlike many contemporary settings of the Mass of the Dead, is not characterized by darkness and terror. Rather, with all of its trepidation - expressed through a marked chromaticism - an atmosphere of hopeful expectation, of trust in the grace and equity of the divine judge predominates. This confidence finds its expression in the choice of the fundamental key of C major, which is rather unusual for a requiem. The work was given an impressive performance on the occasion of the first anniversary of Gounod's death in the Parisian church of Sainte-Madeleine under the direction of Gabriel Fauré and it was highly acclaimed by the contemporary press. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2731500.

This first volume of Twelve Pieces by Gaston Litaize is a set of six pieces for organ. With a difficulty that would fit the skills of upper intermediate players, these pieces require the use of pedals. This first tome includes: 1. Prelude, dedicated to Lauret Bolli, his friend 2. Double Fugue 3. Lied, dedicated to Guy Lambert 4. Intermezzo Pastoral, dedicated to Miss Line Zilgien 5. Final, dedicated to his professor Marcel Dupre 6. Lamento, dedicated to his friend Maurice Dalphin. And the second tome consists of: 7. Scherzo 8. Toccata sur le veni creator 9. Priere 10. Jeux de rythmes 11. Interlude 12. Variations sur un Noel angevin. This piece is quite famous among Gaston Litaize's compositions. Gaston Litaize (1909-1991) was a French organist and composer, blind since his youth. Considered as one of the organ masters of his times, he toured and worked on many recordings. He was also a good professor, and composed many pieces for solo organ and for organ with other instruments.
