A good six years following its first performance in Milan (1773) a second version of Exsultate, jubilate was completed for a performance on Trinity Sunday in 1779. It has survived in a manuscript from Salzburg. This Salzburg version, which was discovered in 1978, differs from the Milan version primarily through the use of flutes instead of oboes and also through the use of two different texts for the first aria. In the first version the text refers to Christmas, whereas in the second version it refers to the festival of Trinity. Mozart's autograph of the Milan version had been thought to be missing since the second world war and it has only been accessible in the Biblioteka Jagiellonska in Krakow for a little over a decade. The present new critical edition by Wolfgang Hochstein is the first which could be based on both versions. Score available separately - see item CA.4076700.

Bertram Luard-Selby (1853-1918): First SonataCharles Harford Lloyd (1849-1919): Sonata in D minorThe first sonata of Bertram Luard-Selby and the sonata of Charles Harford Lloyd are examples of works that demonstrate the transitional nature of the maturing English organ sonata. The portfolio approach towards compositions under one title, a sonata, that included sometimes significantly contrasting movements was common during the second half of the nineteenth century. It allowed composers to demonstrate their own compositional skill as well as highlight the tonal capabilities of the developing symphonic organ in England. The sonatas are playable on both small and large instruments and allow for creativity in registration. The technical difficulty varies between movements. As discussed in The Genesis and Development of an English Organ Sonata (2017), the English sonatas had an important pedagogical role jointly inherited from Mendelssohn’s very practical and popular approach to the instrument and the continued European legacy of the lesson-sonata tradition whereby in learning a piece you also learned the instrument and vice versa.

The composer and organist Paul Siefert, baptized in Gdansk on 28 June 1586 and died there on 6 May 1666, belongs to the 'North German organ school'. Thanks to a grant of the town council of Gdansk, Siefert spent the years from 1607 until probably late 1610 studying in Amsterdam where he got important ideas and suggestions as a pupil of Sweelinck. After his return he became deputy organist in Gdansk. From 1611 to 1616 he worked as an organist first at the church in the old town of Konigsberg, then at the Warsaw court orchestra. On 23 September 1623 he was appointed organist at the Marienkirche of Gdansk in succession to Michael Weyda where he worked until the end of his life. This edition of his organ works contains 13 fantasias, two chorale preludes and a motet as well as a detailed description of the work in the preface and in the critical report.

'YinYang' is the union of polar opposites in Taoism. It is the same in the present work for trumpet and organ in which the two movements form a pair of opposites: 'Toccata' is a powerful, solid music piece that is rough around the edges, with staccato as essential form; 'Melisma' is a sweeping, light and round structure with legato as essential form. This polarity is as elementary as 'male and female'. This is why it is characteristic of the yin-yang symbol that the curved, melismatic line unites contrapuntally with the toccata-like rhythm so that a jubilant praise of wholeness - whether in the Christian or Taoist sense - can be heard. The now-published volumes 9 and 10 have presented a special challenge, for particularly in the field of the chorale arrangements the transmissions are more complex than in any other group of works. This ties in with the crucial question of Bach's authorship, which has been the subject of much controversy in the past. There were heated discussions about it even just prior to our edition, and editors and publisher are aware that the present selection is a thoroughly debatable snapshot. More on this in the volumes' text sections. The situation of the chorale partitas is not quite so dramatic, whereby these holdings also had to be subdivided for reasons of transmission into main section, appendix, and online presentation. The so called ,,Neumeister-Chorale are incorporated in the group of the separately transmitted chorale settings in alphabetical order, because the compilation of the pieces does not follow any collection idea of Bach (such as, for example, his larger late collections). The indication ,,Neumeister-Sammlung should facilitate the attribution. Those works requiring further research, besides of some versions, are presented online, since their profile reveals less evidence of the true author. Breitkopf has given the world a splendid edition of the organ works of Bach. These final two volumes offer a wealth of chorale-based music benefiting from the very latest research. Aside from the edition's obvious scholarly merit, a practicing church organist will love the convenience and variety of these volumes. Recommended without hesitation.(Jonathan B. The organ writing is demanding, but well within the capabilities of experienced organists. Precise registration suggestions are contained in the score. The string orchestra (minimum 4/4/3/3/1) is scored with sophistication, with solos for all instruments. The percussion is for two players - a part for timpani and one for other, readily available percussion instruments. By avoiding the use of wind and brass instruments, the work can also be performed where the tuning of the organ is not ideally suited to modern orchestral pitch.
