My composition for snare drum forms a counter piece to my series of rhythmic pieces (Darabukka for piano or Morgenlied for large orchestra). The dramatic moment - tuned instruments are treated like rhythm instruments - disappear entirely. The inner contrast is replaced by the tension between the different uses of the drum and a relatively large number of invariable performance elements. Although the snare drum was only developed at the beginning of the 19th century, it has its roots in an old and diverse drum culture. The technical aspects of this composition are based on various aspects of this rich culture, both the social customs as well as the variety of different performing techniques and expressions. However, the piece does not merely quote - that would be unhistorical - on the contrary: The modern and progressive, in so far as I can observe this in our social environment, is quite evident, for as the title of the piece tells us the same is not the same. Aus einem Brief an einen der urauffuhrenden Schlagzeuger: Hallo Victor, Du kannst erzahlen, dass am Anfang ein unglaublich langbogiger Aufbau (Steigerung) stattfindet, dass dieser ein Spiel mit Energieaufstapelung und Ubertragung und die musikalische Form somit die Bindung und Disposition von ENERGIEmengen ist. Uberhaupt ist die musikalische Form fur mich nichts anderes als energetische Dramaturgie. Dass im Unisonoteil durch die verschiedenen Schlegelwechsel, die Mischung der beiden Instrumente und der verschiedenen Oktavlagen ein endloses Farbmischungspotential entsteht. Das Torso-Prinzip kommt im langsamen Teil mit Pausen zur Geltung, indem die leeren Passagen (fehlenden Teile) durch die zuvor aufgestapelten Energieubermengen uberschattet (aufgefullt) werden. So sind sie zwar ereignisleer, trotzdem aber energetisch gedeckt. Dass ich die Basslagen dieses neuen Instrumentes Bassmarimba liebe. Daher die dicken Doppelpassagen, die richtig korperhaft wirken. In den polyrhythmischen Teilen geht es um sich verdichtende und verdunnende Klangflachen. Das Ende wird abgebrochen - hier wieder ein Hinweis auf ein Torso. Und naturlich, dass es fur mich beim Komponieren, so wie in diesem Stuck, auch immer um das Festhalten von Klangerlebnissen geht. Jede Art von musikalischer Botschaft soll sich durch dieses Klangerlebnis auch auf das Publikum ubertragen.
