My composition for snare drum forms a counter piece to my series of rhythmic pieces (Darabukka for piano or Morgenlied for large orchestra). The dramatic moment - tuned instruments are treated like rhythm instruments - disappear entirely. The inner contrast is replaced by the tension between the different uses of the drum and a relatively large number of invariable performance elements. Although the snare drum was only developed at the beginning of the 19th century, it has its roots in an old and diverse drum culture. The technical aspects of this composition are based on various aspects of this rich culture, both the social customs as well as the variety of different performing techniques and expressions. However, the piece does not merely quote - that would be unhistorical - on the contrary: The modern and progressive, in so far as I can observe this in our social environment, is quite evident, for as the title of the piece tells us the same is not the same. The sight, sound, power, and feel are tremendous motivators for many students. D.R.U.M. is an acronym for Discipline, Respect and Unity Through Music. The original D.R.U.M. group was formed at author Jim Solomon's elementary school in 1995 to provide an ensemble experience for students not involved in any of the regular music groups. The group concept is designed to stress teamwork and self-discipline while learning these intensive percussion ensembles built on music from the United States, Brazil, Africa, and China. Useful for general music classes and special groups, this book is a terrific learning tool with unlimited potential!

Drumroad 1 marks the beginning of Breitkopf's percussion instruction series. In the first book of Ralf Kleinehanding's method, the comprehensive acquisition of the basic techniques stands in the forefront. Parallel to working on grooves, the student will also learn important fill-ins. The enclosed fill-in book offers a flexible array of uses and combinations, and contains many additional pieces for the toms. Accompanying patterns for chordal instruments (mallets, piano) round off the concept. This wide-ranging book provides essential groundwork for the mastery of percussion instruments. Ideal for traditional instruction, Drumroad 1 will also whet the student's appetite for more complex grooves and techniques in Volume 2.Be a pro at the drums!
