György Orbán (born 1947) is among the most frequently performed contemporary Hungarian composers. His style incorporates a characteristic mix of classical, modern, cinematic, and jazz elements. In addition, he claims he ''loves splashing about in tonality,'' which makes his works accessible to the wider public. Owing to his humor and imagination, he finds an easy path to children, as demonstrated by the popularity of his piano works specifically intended for beginners. He composed close to 70 short children s pieces for Ãgnes Lakos s four-volume Friendly Piano Tutor (Z. 14749-14756), later published separately as Enchanted Forest (Z. 14742). The New Bell includes 19 piano piecesfor beginners among others, we encounter a baby elephant now and again (perhaps paying a visit from Debussy s Children s Corner?) and we hear the awful clamor of a most outgoing granny s alarm clock as well as the solemn tolling of a new church-bell. The pieces are arranged in order of difficulty and even include a few items for three hands which may be played by a pupil with the teacher or another student.

... those who know Bredenbach's Lustige Lieder, know that his music isn't always easy, which it doesn't have to be! He [Bredenbach] knows what children are capable of ... The piece is fun: first, because the story is well-known; second, because the melodies are original and witty (children have an excellent sense for why the melody must be angular in certain places, and why an exploding pipe cannot be set in decending major thirds), third, because hymns, folksongs, and children's songs are hidden everywhere, which strengthen and underline the comedy or joke in each situation ... (Wurtt. Blatter fur Kirchenmusik 2/00).

In 1916, as part of the series Az elemi zongorajáték gyakorlati tananyaga [Practical Repertory for Elementary Piano Playing], Rózsavölgyi & Co. published Bartók's selection of twelve pieces from the collection usually given the title Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach. A revised 1923 edition added one more piece. The contents of our edition are an identical reprint of the 1923 version, including Bartók's in-depth preface in both Hungarian and German and the footnotes he added to the individual pieces (also provided here in an English translation).Johann Sebastian Bach gave his second wife Anna Magdalena two manuscript music-books which contain, besides his own works, compositions by other contemporaries. The present selection includes 13 pieces from the second book (dated to 1725).
