Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) composed this second (Op. 39) of two sets of piano études in 1917. The title Études-Tableaux translates as study pictures. But while the works were inspired by some visual stimuli, Rachmaninoff did not disclose what those were, preferring to let [the listener] paint for themselves what each of the nine tableaux's most suggests.

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) completed his Piano Sonata No. 1 in D minor, Op. 28, in 1908, and it is the first of three Dresden pieces, the others being his Symphony No. 2 and part of an opera. Although he eventually abandoned the idea, the sonata was originally inspired by Goethe's play Faust, which has inspired so many works of the 19th and 20th centuries. The premiere took place on October 17, 1908, in Moscow, with Konstantin Igumnov at the piano.

Sergei Bortkiewicz (1877-1952) continued the late-Romantic piano tradition with great melodic talent. After studying in St. Petersburg with Anatoly Lyadov and in Leipzig with the Liszt pupil Alfred Reisenauer, the native Ukrainian settled in Berlin. Political times blocked his career several times. Only in 1945 he was able to regain his footing in Vienna. The Fantasy Pieces for Piano op. 61 were to be printed in 1949 by the music publishers Benjamin, but again the political circumstances were not favorable for Bortkiewicz. In 2013, the manuscript was discovered in the Saxon State Archive Leipzig. This first edition finally makes Bortkiewicz's highly pianistic pieces accessible. The fantasy pieces do not deny the role models Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky and bribe with Slavic tinted melancholy, paired with Viennese charm.

Rachmaninoff wrote his well-known piano cycle in 1931, at a time when his great works for piano solo and the piano concertos had already made him very famous. Yet it is by no means the “work of an old manâ€. The composerÂ’s variations on the theme “La folia†(taken from a sonata by Corelli) are like a series of fireworks on the piano. He once drily said to a friend, “All this mad running about is necessary in order to efface the themeâ€. Did Rachmaninoff succeed in silencing “la folia†– i.e. the “madnessâ€? Why not seefor yourself!
