Et comme ses prédécesseurs, l’album s’achève sur un happy end en do majeur mais le chemin est ponctué de plus de dissonances, de tension et d'ambiguïté.Solo Piano (2004) est sorti à une époque plus innocente, où Chilly Gonzales faisait figure de pionnier dans l’évocation des genres classique et jazz sur le déclin, pour les pousser à cor et à cri dans le 21ème siècle. Cet album à la virtuosité fortuite a surpris tout le monde, y compris le génie musical autoproclamé.Solo Piano II (2012) est apparu tel un petit chef-d'oeuvre pop pour un monde connecté, une transition vers une nouvelle réalité. Devenu showman légendaire et collaborateur d’artistes renommés et estimés (Drake, Daft Punk, Feist) Chilly Gonzales y dévoilait une collection de morceaux accrocheurs et raffinés, visant à plaire, montrant qu’il était prêt pour le prime time.Ce second opus a assurément satisfait un public grandissant et toujours plus avide des miniatures imparfaitement parfaites de Gonzo.Solo Piano III surgit à un point d’inflexion plus problématique.Les collaborations se poursuivent (Room 29 avec Jarvis Cocker, Ibeyi, Toddla T...) mais Chilly Gonzales ne cherche plus à plaire. A présent, il laisse les fausses notes. Les mystérieux accords et les structures singulières deviennent addictifs et finissent par résonner de façon inéluctable. La première édition du Gonzervatory, école de musique éphémère vient de s’achever et le professeur est redevenu l’étudiant qu’il a toujours été et sera toujours, n’ayant aucune crainte de laisser la musique parler pour elle-même.La pureté musicale de Solo Piano III n'est pas un antidote à notre époque, elle reflète toute la beauté et la laideur qui nous entoure.Ce recueil de partitions rassemble une sélection de 9 pièces de l'album fidèlement transcrites. Ces transcriptions révéleront pour beaucoup une fine mécanique musicale souvent trompeuse ou même invisible à l'écoute. Leur édition a exigé de faire des choix, le premier étant de proposer aux pianistes des partitions aussi confortables que possible.En bonus, les partitions de 2 titres extraits de l'album Chambers, une respiration Solitaire et un happy end Cello ni majeur, ni mineur, mais en mode à 2 (Duo Piano / Violoncelle).

Leurs structures sont différentes de celles des valses viennoises de Strauss. Elles ne présentent ni introduction lente, ni trio, ni coda mais s'apparentent plutôt à un ländler par la sobriété de la pièce. Toutes ces valses sont de formes ABA où deux motifs thématiques s'entremêlent et se lient l’un à l’autre.La valse n°10 se caractérise par sa grande simplicité d'écriture au niveau rythmique par l'alternance de mesures à six croches et à trois noires. Une plaisante mélodie se balade naïvement à travers un accompagnement facile et accessible pour tous pianistes.Contrairement à la Valse n°10, la Valse n°11 se distingue par sa difficulté rythmique. L'emploi d'appoggiatures répétitifs et de rythmes fantasques donne un côté tzigane à cette valse.Ces deux valses à la suite révèlent un aspect versatile dans leur interprétation. La valse n°10 tangue tranquillement sur les rives du Danube jusqu'à l'arrivée de la valse n°11 où s'exaltent sur les berges des musiciens tziganes.Une vague de douceur et de fantaisie enveloppera les pianistes de valses viennoises à travers ces valses de Brahms qui finalement les laissera libres à la danse.

Et à ce jour, nous n’avons aucune trace d’autres œuvres composées par Tolstoï.Vers la fin des années 90, la BBC a diffusé une intervention de Isaiah Berlin (philosophe, président de la British Academy) qui parlait de l’œuvre de Tolstoï « La Sonate à Kreutzer », l'histoire d'un homme obsessionnellement jaloux de sa femme, qui tue le violoniste avec qui elle joue juste parce qu’il suppose l’infidélité de son épouse. En aparté de l’analyse, il tint ces propos : « il était très musicien, Tolstoï ! Il a écrit une valse - [...] J'ai entendu dire qu'il l’a joué. Elle est éditée dans un livre. Ma femme l’a joué pour moi, c'est très simple ».A partir de là , cette valse a été retrouvée, manuscrite, en appendice d’un ouvrage russe intitulé « Leo Tolstoy and Music » (N. Gusev et Gol'denveizer). Lors d’un entretien, Gol’denveizer en parle comme ceci : « Dans sa jeunesse, le conte Lev Nikolaïevitch (Tolstoï) a composé une valse pour le Piano. Lorsque, en 1906, j’étais à Lasnaïa Poliana (Grand domaine familiale des Tolstoï où l’écrivain finit sa vie, et où il y repose), Lev Nikolaïevitch l’a joué devant nous. Nous avons effectué alors le relevé. Ce fut la seule fois que nous avons entendu Lev Nikolaïevitch jouer ».La Valse en Fa Majeur de Léon Tolstoï vous est proposée là , dans sa plus fidèle transcription réalisée à partir de plusieurs enregistrements.

Celle-ci chante dans l'intermédiaire du piano, à la voix d'alto. Elle est enveloppée de notes longues et tenues sur un ton nostalgique où l'on distingue un accompagnement en croches constantes sur une durée de temps régulière.A l'opposé du caractère de cette valse n°5, se présente sur un ton enjoué la valse n°9 en ré mineur. D'une grande expressivité, cette pièce à danser a un rythme binaire sur un tempo à 4/4. Beaucoup de soupirs s'entremêlent dans cette valse. Rossini y voyait des réminiscences d'une valse de Schumann du recueil Davidsbündler.Les pianistes amateurs de valses viennoises et de Strauss seront étonnés de découvrir que Brahms s'est évertué à vouloir « faire valser » son public. Ecoutez ces deux petites valses harmonieuses et mélancoliques pour finalement laisser libre court à la danse.

Elle a probablement des racines très anciennes, on en retrouve des traces dans le culte des dieux antiques. Particulièrement vivace, cette musique, accompagnée d'une danse effrénée, était jouée au cours de cérémonies qui pouvaient durer des journées entières, cérémonies qui avait pour mission de guérir ceux que l'on croyait être victimes de morsure d'une araignée légendaire, la tarentule. Ces cérémonies populaires ont quasiment disparu au milieu du XXème siècle.Des compositeurs comme Gioacchino Rossini ont repris la tarentelle à leur manière. Cette Tarentelle Napolitaine, dite La Danza, a été composée pour un orchestre symphonique et ténor soliste. Mais elle a été reprise et arrangée de nombreuses fois par divers ensembles instrumentaux (ensembles de guitares), et chantés par exemple par des mezzo-soprano. Cette pièce semble tourner et virevolter, et rappelle vraiment une danse envoutante.

Elles comptent au total vingt et une pièces dont dix-huit ont été rééditées en 1845 sous le titre « Brises d'Orient » et trois autres sous le titre « Les Minarets ».A leur sortie, ces mélodies n'obtiennent pas un grand succès. Deux raisons peuvent l'expliquer. D'une part, un incendie détruit une partie des stocks de partitions imprimées. D'autre part, le public, qui avait aimé les « Orientales » du poète Victor Hugo et les « Pestiférés de Jaffa » du peintre Eugène Delacroix, ne semblait pas être attiré par l'orientalisme musical.Les brises d'Orient possèdent la puissance des charmes orientaux plutôt doux. Le compositeur traduit à merveille l'atmosphère orientale en marquant les rythmes par des basses étonnantes.Plus que des formes traditionnelles, ce qu'il faut retenir de ces pièces est le fait qu'elles racontent de belles histoires avec toujours une dynamique très réussie de passages lents et de passages vifs et rapides. L'Almée (danseuse égyptienne) en est un très bon exemple avec une introduction si lyrique que l'on s'attend à l'apparition d'une diva.Mais surprise, un développement harmonieux calme les esprits. Et jusqu'à la conclusion les reprises du thème très rythmé alternent avec ceux du développement lent.Venez découvrir un compositeur digne des grands maîtres de peinture orientale. Cette pièce mérite d'être interprétée par tout pianiste amateur de la musique classique.
