Work for solo piano. My snapshots are scribblings in pencil or ink, with a little color, and that's all -Kees van Dongen. This collection of short pieces is neither akin to sketches nor to studies, nor to preludes, nor to variations in the classical meaning of the word. They are like the rough drawings that make up a kind of travel notebook, and as such they demand a piano writing that involves widely varied musical gestures. This multiplicity of very different motifs crates sudden ruptures in the sonic atmosphere. This writing doesn't develop but rather hints at things in order to reach equilibrium between light and deep. A play on variants of the core motifs runs right through across the work. Each piece centers on a motif or a group of motifs in particular that builds the shape of a palindrome.

In 1735 Bach published the Italian Concerto, presented here in a revised separate edition, together with the French Overture in the second part of his âClavier Ãbungâ. The two works were intended to respectively exemplify the Italian and French styles. Thus, the âConcertoâ unmistakably imitates an Italian solo concerto, using only the means of the harpsichord. Tutti and solo passages can be heard as well as the dynamic gradations of the sound layers, which Bach explicitly marked with piano and forte. Energetic outer movements frame an Andante, in which a melancholy cantilena unfolds over unadorned chords. For the revision of this Bach classic, editor Ullrich Scheideler also evaluated, in addition to the prints, early manuscript copies which allowed interesting conclusions about the lost autograph.

Rachmaninoff wrote his well-known piano cycle in 1931, at a time when his great works for piano solo and the piano concertos had already made him very famous. Yet it is by no means the “work of an old manâ€. The composerÂ’s variations on the theme “La folia†(taken from a sonata by Corelli) are like a series of fireworks on the piano. He once drily said to a friend, “All this mad running about is necessary in order to efface the themeâ€. Did Rachmaninoff succeed in silencing “la folia†– i.e. the “madnessâ€? Why not seefor yourself!

In 2017, PWM commemorated the bicentenary of the death of Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a great hero of Poland. To mark the occasion, PWM Edition presented this publication revealing a different side to Kosciuszko to that which is widely familiar. We usually hear and read about his military accomplishments, which certainly deserve to be remembered, yet Kosciuszko was a multi-faceted person who cannot be fully appreciated from just a single perspective. This leader of a national insurrection was a pupil of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. He also played the piano and may possibly have composed and arranged music as well. The aim of this publication is to shoaw Kosciuszko both as a creative artist and also as a source of inspiration for composers of the early nineteenth century. Comprising three separate components, this hard-bound boxed set with three books is divided into two parts, dealing with art and music. Presented in the first part are drawings and watercolors that appear independently, as a selection of reproductions, or else as illustrations of Pawel Ignaczak's essay on Kosciuszko's works of art. In the second part, Adam Tomasz Kukla's article introduces readers to the world of music composed or arranged by Kosciuszko and music referring to him. Musically gifted readers are encouraged to play selected compositions from those discussed in the essay, thanks to the music accompanying the book. Text in Polish and English.
