The piano-accompanied Lied is undoubtedly the main genre of Pauline Viardot-Garcia's oeuvre. With this volume, we present settings of German texts by such poets as Ludwig Uhland, Eduard Morike, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Heinrich Heine, Emanuel Geibel, Ludwig Rellstab and Richard Pohl. Except for the Uhland settings, these German Lieder were written between 1862 and 1871 during Viardot's Baden-Baden period, when she shifted the focus of her activities from singing to composing and teaching. Here she worked, among other things, on the poetry of Eduard Morike, which she called the greatest and most genuine in all German poetry after Goethe. One of her first published songs was the setting of the Uhland poem Des Knaben Berglied. Accompanying herself on the piano, she performed it in 1838 on her first concert tour of Germany. A performance of the song at the Leipzig Gewandhaus prompted Robert Schumann to remark: She showed three talents here [composition, singing and piano playing], each of which would grace its artist. Through her music, Viardot brings the creatures in the poems to life, tracing their different characters and inner states, thus giving the texts a new level of interpretation.Miriam-Alexandra Wigber's recordings of songs from this edition can be found on YouTube.

Late in his life, composer J. Rosamond Johnson (Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing) submitted to his longtime publisher, E.B. Marks, a list of songs that would comprise a volume of his best early popular songs written with his pre-1910 partner Bob Cole and his brother, James Weldon Johnson (Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man). That list was never put into print...until now. Featuring an introductionby Dr. Thomas Riis (Just Before Jazz) and several rare photos, this new compilation is the latest legacy offering from the Marks archive, which contains a rich heritage of turn-of-the-century African-American, and thus distinctly American, pre-jazz-era popular song. Includes: Ain't Dat Scan'lous * Big Indian Chief * The Big Red Shawl * The Bleeding Moon * Congo Love Song * The Countess of Alagazam * Fishing * I Don't Want to Be No Actor Man No Mo' * I'll Always Love Old Dixie * I'll Keep a Warm Spot in My Heart for You * I've Got Troubles of My Own * The Katy-Did, the Cricket and the Frog * Lazy Moon * Lit'l Gal * Louisiana Lize * Lovely Daughter of Allah * Ma Mississippi Belle * The Maiden with the Dreamy Eyes * Mudder Knows * My Heart's Desiah is Miss Mariah * My Castle on the Nile * Nobody's Lookin' but de Owl an' de Moon * Oh, Didn't He Ramble * The Old Flag Never Touched the Ground * On the Road to Monterey * The Pathway of Love * Roll Them Cotton Bales * Save It for Me! * The Spirit of the Banjo! * Sugar Babe * Two Eyes * Under the Bamboo Tree * When de Jack O'Lantern Starts to Walk About * When It's All Goin' Out, and Nothin' Comin' In * Who Do You Love?

In composing songs, which Moniuszko wrote from his youth to the end of his life, he was guided by a definite idea. He wished to present Polish society with national, Polish songs, which could occupy an important place in the everyday life of the Polish people, so displacing imported trash. In a similar way Jozef Ignacy Kraszewski, with an extensive and comprehensive series of novels, supplanted the French romance, so popular, especially with contemporary ladies. Having composed a considerable number of songs, Moniuszko conceived the idea of publishing them in separate books under one general title: Songbook for Home Use. The title of this collection is significant evidence of the composers intention: these songs are to be used at home by every and any body in all the different circumstances of everyday life. They should suit the different moods and needs of the heart, so resulting in rich diversity. [Witold Rudzinski].

To mark the 100th birthday of Ursula Mamlok (1923 – 2016), Boosey & Hawkes Bote & Bock, in collaboration with the Dwight and Ursula Mamlok Foundation, is publishing a series of works from the composer's estate that were not published during her lifetime. This volume brings together four aphoristic songs from 1946 and 1950, which show Mamlok to be an early (and then lifelong) mistress of the small form and are all the more interesting because vocal music plays rather a minor role in the composer's oeuvre. Here she responds to the poetry and the way of thinking of her adopted homeland of only a few years, with English texts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The themes and attitudes are as varied as their authors, from the idyll of nature to the snapshot of a party to the grotesque nursery rhyme, each of which is put into music by Mamlok just as sparingly as fittingly.

It is a great pleasure to present, with Thanatopsis, maestro Kissin's opus 4, an expressive setting of the ground-breaking poem from the quill of William Cullen Bryant. Published in in the form known today in 1821, it is an early example of American romantic poetry of the 19th century. Bryant is today reckoned among the group of “Fireside Poets†or “Schoolroom Poets,†names that allude to the places where their poems were usually recited. His poems – first and foremost Thanatopsis (“A Consideration of Deathâ€) as his most famous – are rooted in the English tradition, but at the same time show Bryant's openness to a genuine American language and lifeworld. Evgeny Kissin's setting is a large vocal scene intensely informed by recitative, which congenially allows the prevailing mood of the text to resound. Our edition additionally includes German and French translations of the poem and an informative afterword about Bryant's life and work and the genesis of Thanatopsis.
