Their christian convictions and sense of responsibility gave them the courage to put up resistance, resistance against the lies, the contempt for humanity and all human values. Sophie and Hans Scholl took their stand in the full knowledge that they were taking a deadly risk. They would simply not have been able to live with their feelings of shame had they not grasped the chance of fighting for what they believed in, even though it was a dangerous thing to do. Memories of past events, doubts, hopes and fears, justification of deeds and an acceptance of death, all these things happen and move in, and between, these two people during this representation of the hour before death. The orchestra provides a psycho-physical shorthand of their inner mental state. Musical effects and gestures search for their identity in human behaviour. The moments of stillness and silence provide moments of musical tension, which are just as powerful as the eruptions of fear and desperation. Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia was premiered at Milan's Teatro alla Scala on 26 December 1833 and is considered one of the composer's most important and innovative operas of the 1830s. Although, because of censorship issues, particularly in the south of Italy, it was initially slow to become popular, by the late 1830s it had become one of the composer's most popular operas, both in Italy and abroad, and remained an essential part of the composer's oeuvre until at least the end of the nineteenth century. Remarkable for its daring subject matter (with an unconventional, forceful heroine), it is also renowned for its challenging mixture of the comic and the tragic, something very unusual at the time and clearly an important influence on Giuseppe Verdi's middle period masterpieces. The present reduction for voice and piano derives from the critical edition of the score, recently published in this catalog: is based on Donizetti's autograph manuscript (housed in the Ricordi Archives in Milan), on the libretto for the premiere, on several printed editions of voice and piano, and on numerous additional scores of the period. It presents for the first time all the numerous additions that the composer made to the score over the course of ten years: a fascinating record of his changing music dramatic attitudes during this period. There is also a synthetic historical reconstruction of the genesis of the opera and of the description of the Sources as well as a selection of most interest to singers of Critical Commentary Notes.Rappresentata per la prima volta al Teatro alla Scala il 26 dicembre 1833, Lucrezia Borgia e considerata una fra le piu importanti e innovative opere di Donizetti. Goethe, who studied in Leipzig between 1765 and 1768 (a period he wrote about in Dichtung und Wahrheit), was friends there with a young man of his age, Bernhard Theodor Breitkopf, the grandson of the publishing house's founder. Breitkopf set his friend's first poems to music in the style of the day. The Neue Lieder und Melodien came out for the 1770 Leipzig spring fair, though without any mention of the poet, still completely unknown at that time. The title Goethes Leipziger Liederbuch dates only from 1932, when Gunter Raphael prepared a new edition for the Goethe commemorative year.
