Despite a strong vocation for the cello, which he studied and began to play with a distinctive character, Pau Casals, like most ambitious, creative musicians, wrote at the piano and for the piano, as it is the ultimate teaching instrument, summarising the full vision of the creative process. Any creative musician habitually worked at the piano, whether for this instrument alone or for piano accompanied by other solo instruments. To date, it has not been possible to document whether Casals had systematic training on this instrument, although at that time it was more common than it is today because, considering its qualities of timbre and combination, it was particularly attractive for creating test pieces and different kinds of compositions.The piano works contained in this second volume include part of the salon repertoire, a continuation of the first volume, and four sardanas for piano of diverse origin: some are reductions of more complex forms and others sketches for instrumental groups. In the first group, some works intended for children are published, a demonstration of the tenderness the ‘cellist felt for the children of his closest friends. In the second case, the sardanas are works from his first exile in Prada and show the nostalgia of the composer, away from his country against his will.In general, the works are not especially complex; their purpose and nature are diverse. They come in the context of salon music, with the appearance of creative entertainments characterised by a basically tonal, transparent language with a widespread tendency to modulate to nearby keys more as a momentary expressive resource than as a structural evolutionary procedure. They show a lack of systematic work on the instrument as well as the commonplaces of piano composition of their time. In some of these works, the piano thread breaks, the works do not have the thrust of finished products; the occasional appearance of chords that are difficult or impossible to finger leads us to think of intentions closer to test pieces than to products intended for normal performance. But not all these piano works are circumstantial. There is also a prelude and a minuet of a certain piano writing complexity.

All of this is all in addition to his role as a tireless advocate of everything relating to the piano, which reveals his exceptional personality completely dedicated to his greatest passion-music.The academic year 2011-12 marked the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Conservatorio Municipal de Musica de Barcelona. In honor of the occasion, Jordi Vilaprinyo composed a series of eleven short pieces which present a pianistic-musical portrait of each professor of the Piano Department in our Conservatory. This piece, written in the form of a suite, brings together eleven imaginative musical sketches which reflect the personal qualities and musical personalities of his colleagues as seen through the eyes of Mr. Vilaprinyo. Trotzdem kommt er nicht zu kurz. Ideal fur alle, die zwar viel lernen mochten, aber den Etuden im Allgemeinen nichts abgewinnen konnen. Der Komponist Rodolphe Haimann wurde 1960 in Arras (Frankreich) geboren. Er studierte Musikwissenschaft und Kunstgeschichte in Gottingen und danach Klavier (bei Agathe Wanek), Violine (bei Doris Spemann), Liedgestaltung (bei Burkhardt Schaeffer) sowie Komposition (bei Friedrich K. Wanek) am Peter-Cornelius-Konservatorium in Mainz. Es folgte ein Studium an der California State University in Fresno (USA) in den Fachern Klavier (bei Philip Lorenz) und Komposition (bei Jack Fortner). Rodolphe Haimann bestreitet zahlreiche Konzerte als Solist, Liedbegleiter und im Klavier-Duo mit Thomas Noichl im In- und Ausland. Seit 1991 ist Rodolphe Haimann Lehrbeauftragter fur Klavier und Komposition am Camerloher-Gymnasium in Freising (Musisches Gymnasium). Er ist Gastdozent an der Musikakademie Marktoberdorf und Mitglied der EPTA (European Piano Teachers Association).

Die Idee entstand Anfang der 90-er-Jahre, als ich das Allegro Barbaro, von Bartok selbst gespielt, im Fernsehen sah. Die unglaubliche Kraft, das Urtumliche, Kriegerische hat mich nachhaltig beeindruckt. Kurz darauf entstand eine kurze Improvisation. Etwa zehn Jahre danach schrieb ich meinen Klavierzyklus Vier Charakterstucke. Da bot sich das improvisatorische Material als Grundlage fur den Finalsatz an. Alle vier Stucke zeichnen sich durch treibende Motorik und Vorherrschaft bestimmter Intervalle aus. Im 4. Satz herrscht der Tritonus vor, allerdings - und das ist sein ,,Fluch - mit der kleinen Sekunde zur Quinte strebend, jedoch wie von einer unsichtbaren Symmetrieachse festgehalten (diese entspricht der Anordnung der Hande und liegt irgendwo zwischen ihnen). Als Finalsatz werden in Tritons Fluch auch die Intervalle der ubrigen Satze, also Oktave, Sexte und Terz synthetisch zusammengebracht. Daruber hinaus symbolisiert Triton - der Mond des Planeten Neptun - den ,,Fluch eines von unuberwindbaren Kraften festgehaltenen Korpers, der dadurch nicht in die Lage kommt seinen eigenen Weg gehen zu konnen. Das ist naturlich nur (zeit)bedingt richtig, da das Universum expandiert und irgendwann alle planetarischen Zwange sich auflosen. Allerdings ist nicht auszuschliessen, dass sie sich doch zu neuen Konstellationen wieder formen werden. Dem hinzufugen mochte ich nur noch die Anspielung auf die mythologische Figur des Tritons, dem Sohn Neptuns. (R. Pawollek)Wie man dem Titel entnehmen kann, herrscht in diesem virtuosen Klavierstuck der Tritonus vor, allerdings - und das ist sein Fluch - mit der kleinen Sekunde zur Quinte strebend, jedoch wie von einer unsichtbaren Symmetrieachse festgehalten.
