According to Ira Gershwin ' Lullaby ' was probably originally intended as a piano solo as he was in possession of an unfinished fragment of it. However it only became publically familiar when it emerged as a string quartet which George Gershwin had written sometime between 1919 and 1920. We do not know exactly when Gershwin composed the preceding piano version of Lullaby but the theme subsequently appears in 1922 as the heroine's love song in his opera 'Blue Monday'. Until the present edition arranged By Alicia Zizzo there was no existing score for piano solo.

Some of the songs had achieved popularity before Gershwin's death in 1937 but the work earned real approval and favor only after the 1940 Theater Guild presentation of a slightly revised version. Restored to Gershwin's Original Manuscript-Rhapsody in Blue has here been restored to its original manuscript by Alicia Zizzo. Few composers have written material that has been more improvised upon imitated fragmented and generally misinterpreted than George Gershwin's. Gershwin's lack of participation in the original publication of Rhapsody in Blue led to an unanticipated altered composition that was shrouded in unanswered questions for more than half a century. The editors at Harms determined to edit the piece according to their view on how the piece should be performed. It was deemed too long among other factors. Zizzo has reinserted the deleted passages and after extensive research has reinstored thispieces authenticity. The book included the appendum to the 2 piano/ 4 hands edition.

George Gershwin's three most famous preludes demonstrate his genius for piano writing, and portray a variety of styles. Prelude I exudes energetic syncopation, Prelude II is a lyric blues with an ostinato-like accompaniment, and Prelude III closes this set brilliantly with rugged rhythms and exciting syncopations. All three preludes were selected for the Federation Festivals 2011-2013.

Gershwin created these 18 song transcriptions between 1919 and 1931. He played the pieces at numerous private parties, often with many variations. Gershwin's impromptu performances of these 18 songs served as the basis for the transcriptions. His unique playing style can be detected in these wonderful pieces. / Piano
