Danish composer and organist Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) is a prime example of the North German baroque school and an influence on Johann Sebastian Bach's style. The works in this three-volume collection were found in a family-book, which for centuries was handed down in the Danish family of Ryge until their discovery in the mid-20th century. The collection of 19 suites, 6 works of variation, and 3 anonymous works (likely by Buxtehude) have been compiled and edited by Emilius Bangert. Vol. 1 includes Suites I-X; Vol. 2 includes Suites XI-XIX; Vol. 3 includes Works of variation and anonymous works.

The 'Ten short piano pieces' with the title Sommerferie i Blekinge (Summer Holiday in Blekinge) (1916) have not been preserved in their complete form. The only existing source is a manuscript in Rued Langgaard's hand that lacks the first and last pages with sections of the music. This means that the entire first piano piece with the title Paa rejse (Travelling) is missing as well as most of Piece II, Mode (Meeting) (only the conclusion of this piece has been preserved). A large fragment exists of Piece X, Aften med Dans (Evening with Dancing), but the conclusion is missing. The manuscript is to be found at the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen (RLS 83,2). On the first page,Langgaard has merely written 'Piano Pieces 1916': the real title and titles of the movements in the first two pieces derives from other sources. In 2008, the Rued Langgaard Society asked the Danish composer Niels Marthinsen (b. 1963) to add to the work, the aim being to create a 'performance version'. Marthinsen composed a complete new first piece - Paa rejse (Travelling) - and allowed it to merge with the preserved concluding fragment of Langgaard's second piece, Mode (Meeting). Niels Marthinsen further composed a conclusion to the incomplete Piece X, Aften med Dans (Evening with Dancing), and in it incorporated a reference to the first piece, so that his additions came to form a frame round what hasbeen preserved of Langgaard's work. This supplemented version was given its first performance by Berit Johansen Tange in 2008. The overall title and titles of the individual pieces refer to a summer stay in 1913, i.e. three years before the work was composed, when the then 20-year-old composed was on holiday in Kyrkhult in Blekinge (Sweden).

Lullabies / Vuggeviser for Piano solo was composed by Bent Sorensen in 2000. Preface / Programme Note: Some melodies keep haunting me: they will stick in my mind, and I will walk about humming them, and they will find their way into my music. Two such melodies are the basis for the present piano piece, which I call LULLABIES. The first little tune began its life as a ballad in an operatic draft ofmine. Later on - with text by English poet Selima Hill - it became part of my songcycle ROSES ARE FALLING for mezzo soprano and piano. In the latter context it is a love song, but I have always had a lullaby-feeling about this tune, and, indeed, as a lullaby it appears in my opera UNDERTHE SKY, to text by Peter Asmussen: inthe opera, the loved one sings and hums to her beloved and make him come to rest. During LULLABIES the tune will appear a half tone lower with each entry, and make its way downwards through the musical texture, from upper voice to bassline. The other little melody is a true lullaby, which I hummed for my youngest daughter to try and make her go to sleep. Later on it became the backdrop for the last movement of my trombone concerto, BIRDS AND BELLS. The two melodies in their original form are reproduced at the beginning of LULLABIES. Bent Sorensen, 2000.

Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) is one of the most important Danish composers of the 20th century. Langgaard’s piano compositions are evenly spread out over his 50 productive years from 1902 to 1951. Generally speaking hispiano music represents the entire broad spectrum of expression and the stylistic diversity one finds in his music. Some of the most personal works he created are to be found among the piano works, e.g. Insectarium (1917), Music ofthe Abyss (1921-24), Insanity Fantasy (1914-49) and Le Béguinage (1948-49). In many of the works, however, nostalgic and romantic moods of expression are predominant.
This publication presents Langgaard’spianomusic in its entire range. The three volumes comprise 26 works and 44 individual piano pieces. Only 11 of the compositions have previouslybeen published.
The Rued Langgaard Edition (RLU) was established in 2000,the aim being to present practical, performance-oriented publications of Langgaard’s works on a critical scholarly basis.

Niels Gade (1817-1890), who was born in Copenhagen and spent most of his life there, went to Leipzig in 1843 for further training on a royal scholarship. There he became friends with Robert Schumann and found an eager patron in Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. He is regarded as the most important figure of the Danish musical scene in the 19th century. His charming cycle 'Der Kinder Christabend' was published in 1859 with titles and texts in Danish. Although the first German edition was published in Leipzig in 1860, the English edition was not published in London until 1880. With his five mood pictures 'Weihnachts-Glocken' - 'Weihnachtsbaum-Einzugs-Marsch' - 'Ringeltanz der Knaben' - 'Tanz der kleinen Madchen' - 'Gute Nacht', Gade portrays the typical atmosphere of a middle-class Christmas evening in the 19th century.

Esperanza - Eremitkrebs-Tango (1997) Hermit Crab Tango, Esperanza is part of Norgard's Animals in Concert, a suite of piano pieces, so far comprised of: 1. A Tortoise's Tango (1984) - dur.: 4' 2. Light of a Night - Paul meets bird (1989) - dur.: 6' 3. Hermit Crab Tango - Esperanza (1997) - dur.: 5' The pieces can be performed together or one by one. In the1980s, quite a few “finds” turned up in Per Norgard's music. The material could be, say, a number of song birds' equilibrist melodic lines, the overtones of the ocean surf, or waltzing themes by the schizophrenic artist Adolf Wolfli (1864-1930). Or again, as heard here, it can be the rhythms and motifs of the tango and a Beatles song (with bird), explored in three independent piano pieces that form the Animals in Concert suite, about which the composer writes: Programme note for Animals in Concert: 1. Tortoise Tango was the original title of this piece, “written for Achilles” (the pianist Yvar Mikhashoff), for his so called tango project”, including new tangos for piano by composers from all over the world. “Light of a Night (Paul meets bird)” was commissioned by pianist Aki Takahashi. It is a “reworked” arrangement for piano of the Beatles song ”Blackbird”. As some of us will recall, the Beatles on “The White Album” let the beautiful song to the blackbird be accompanied by an (apparently) live blackbird song. It is this authentic bird-motif world that in “Light of a Night” weaves itself into the Beatles melody and in turn is gradually infected by it, so that a completely new third entity ensues: a kind of Bird-rock ballad (or maybe it is a Beatle-bird?). “Hermit Crab Tango (Esperanza)”: The tango situation is quite special for a Hermit Crab. It is a well-known fact that the hermit crab - this soft animal - must run the gauntlet among the many perils at the bottom of the sea when it must move hose. I have chosen to express the angers by a tango pattern - sharp as a cactus - through which the tune, optimistic, slips to its new shelter. I have borrowed the tune from songwriter Hanne Methling's Introduction: 'I want to get through this time!' she sings in a ecstatically ascending melody line - and I believe that these words must correspond very well to the mood of the hermit crab: 'Esperanza'- the green runners of hope wind among the latticework formed by the tango rows.

This collection of character pieces by Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian and Danish composers is a good illustration of the fact that there is plenty to discover in those areas of Europe that more rarely enjoy the limelight. The composers featured in this volume were all famous in their day, and not only participated in European musical life but also helped to shape it: the Norwegian Agathe Backer-Grondahl, for example, was a pupil of Ferenc Liszt and Hans von Bülow, the Swede Ludvig Norman was also an outstanding concert pianist, and Niels Wilhelm Gade was the most important Danish romantic composer, conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and a friend of Mendelssohn andSchumann.

Hyme was expertly composed by Danish composer Anders Brodsgaard . Brodsgaard began by writing rigorously structured pieces, inspired by the serial composers of the 50s. In his more recent pieces, Brodsgaard has been working with more fundamental musical phenomenon like tonality and pulse, still inspired by the post-Pythagorean idea of a musical continuum between the musical parameters.
