This Value Pack includes Rachmaninoff's Fantaisie-tableaux (Suite No. 1), Op. 5 and Suite No. 2, Op. 17.Fantaisie-tableaux (Suite No. 1), the large four-movement work, was written in 1893 and premiered by Rachmaninoff and Pavel Pabst in Moscow. It is dedicated to Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. A few lines of poetry by Romantic poets preface each movement. The theme of love in the first two movements is brought to life by the two pianos with colorful, passionate writing. The final two movements feature the sound of bells---the third movement inspired by cathedrals bells that Rachmaninoff heard as a youngster, and the fourth movement capturing the jubilant sound of Easter carillon.Suite No. 2, Op. 17 was written between 1900 and 1901, and was premiered in 1901 by Rachmaninoff and Alexander Siloti. This virtuosic suite is orchestral in nature and contains four movements. The first movement serves as a march-like introduction, and the second and fourth movements are dances---a waltz and tarantella. Between the two dances is a slow third movement. Two copies required for performance.

Olde English Suite explores Carter Pann’s infatuation with Edwardian English culture as popularized by Downton Abbey. Its four movements (Overture, Sarabande, Pastorale, Finale: Gallop) evoke the atmosphere and character of that elegant age. The composer notes he also had the desire to write a piano duet that he could have a wonderful time playing with other pianists.Olde English Suite (2017) for piano, four hands explores my recent infatuation with Edwardian English history as popularized by the hit television series Downton Abbey. These four movements attempt to evoke the atmosphere and character of that comparably recent age. I also had the desire to write a piece for piano that I would have a wonderful time playing with several other pianists. -CP.

Composer Note: In 1990, after eight years in the United States, I wrote my first work for solo piano, titled My Song, commissioned for Peter Serkin. At the time, my primary compositional concentration was to develop a melodic and harmonic style within the boundaries of Chinese folk music, which are mostly in pentatonic modes, and contemporary Western Classical music. As a result, all the four movements in My Song were either based on existing Chinese folk tunes or written in their style. I was asked recently by another virtuoso pianist friend, Yefim Bronfman, to write a work for solo piano. After the passing of 17 years, I wonder if there is any change in my writing. I therefore titled the new suite My Other Song. There are four movements in the composition, the first three of which are brief and provide contrast in character. The theme of the last movement, the longest, is based on a Buddhist chant heard at the wake for my mother in February 2005.–Bright Sheng.

The four movements of Great Smoky Mountains take the listener on a visit to scenic panoramas throughout the national park. The first movement, Great Smoky Mountain Splendor, captures the vibrant colors of the fall foliage with grand gestures that span the range of the keyboard. In Towering Mount Mitchell, the second movement, an expressive legato right-hand melody, with interesting harmonic support in the left hand, captures the summit with its forest and plants. The third movement, Ballad of Cades Cove, is in the key of A minor with melodic interest in both hands and depicts the historic buildings in this green valley. A left-hand ostinato figure in the fourth movement, The Potter's Wheel, represents the turning of the wheel when skilled local craftsmen create ceramic wares.

Having been considered as a 'fashionable' and 'cliché' composer of his day, Hahn's compositions are possibly not as well-known as they ought to be. Portraits De Peintres for Pianohowever, is one of many compositions that shatter these prejudices held, representing the engaging diversity of the composer's music. Venezuelan-born Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947) entered the Paris Conservatoireat 10 years old. He received a high standard of musical education from Decombes, Lavignac, Dubois and Massenet before becoming a prolific and versatile composer himself, writing works for all genres. For Hahn, music wasamagical art and his compositions often contain expressions of his otherwise hidden emotions and moods. Portraits De Peintres is made up of four movements based on the poems of Marcel Proust, depictingfour different artists. Hahn's Portraits De Peintres contains a variety of different features, making for a pleasant and evocative work for intermediate pianists.

Jyrki Linjama composed Sonata da chiesa I for piano as a commission from the Carinthischer Sommer festival in Austria and premiered by Juho Pohjonen at Ossiach Abbey in summer 2010. The title alludes to the sonata tradition of the Baroque at its weightiest and most solemn. The polyphonic church sonata with its strict adherence to form for a long time occupied an important role in the liturgy (as distinct from the sonata da camera). Linjama’s modern application of this tradition articulates features of the liturgy: breathing, bells, shades of darkness and light. The closed Miserere of the opening movement opens out in the middle movements to let in light, which the angelic song of the last movement once again encloses in translucent twilight. Each of the four movements uses a medieval melody as its material.Have a look inside by clicking “sample. Duration: c. 14’.

While the titles given to each of the movements within each Pentagram are most descriptive, the composer cautions that they were given in most cases after the work was completed, and imply no particular program. Rudhyar considers the pieces poems, using tone combinations, melodies, and chords as words. Each Pentagram contains five short movements with subititles such as The Call, Surging, Salutation to the Depths, Daughters of Men, and others. The Third Pentagram has been recorded on Orion 7285. 36 pages Published by: Columbia University Music Press First and Second Pentagrams -- available for sale separately in the Subito Store (#80102577).

Schubert composed his piano sonata in a minor in May 1825; it is one of Schubert's few piano works that was published during his lifetime. The four movements are expressive but each in its own way: a ballade style in the first piece, a songful second movement, surging restlessness in the third and eruptive passion in the final movement. Together, however, they constitute a uniform work. Since the autograph is lost, this revised Urtext edition is based exclusively on the first edition that was authorised by Schubert. The preface and comments provide detailed information on the genesis of the work and on open questions concerning the musical text. Carefully thought-out fingerings by Schubert expert Martin Helmchen round off the edition.

The Sonata No. 9 from 1947 is Prokofiev's last originally composed and completed piano work. It was premiered by the leading Soviet pianist Sviatoslav Richter. The four movements in a cyclical connection are only faintly reminiscent of the consistent characteristics of the three so-called War Sonatas Nos. 6-8. The character of this almost unknown sonata fluctuates between 'balanced' and 'uniform'. The work is suitable for intermediate and advanced pianists.
