For Piano.By Vladimir NikolovFlashes is a collection of twelve miniature pieces for solo piano, composed in several stages over a long period of time. Each one of these pieces illustrates an independent story and mood and is written with a different approach to the piano. All of the stories are products of instant moments of creativity that gradually became depictions of everyday life events, places and revelations that occurred during the process of writing. Many times this process became the story itself, thus the source of light evolved into its own reflection.Styles vary from classical, post-impressionist to jazz and minimal through organic compositional structure.Titles Include:First Etude for PianoSun - trine - MoonLast Etude for PianoDistanceBit BangWednesday AfternoonGameSkopjeReflection...(on Caress)Prelude to Still LifeThe Third Day'Round Midday.

For Piano Solo. By Jianjun He. Synthesizing Western compositional techniques with Chinese musical elements, Fantasy for Piano shows the fusion of different cultures and the diversity of today's music. There are two main melodic ideas: one uses a whole-tone scale, somewhat related to the folk music of Ningxia, my home province in northwest China; the other, with its shifting major and minor thirds, shows a connection toWestern tonal music. The piece is roughly in three-part form: fast-slow-fast. Although the last part is derived from the first, each of the three has its own characteristics, while the entire piece is unified by the two melodic ideas described above. Fantasy for Piano is available on the VMM (Vienna Modern Masters) label recorded by Jeffrey Jacob.

Innocence is available for either piano solo or piano and chamber accompaniment (flute, clarinet, first and second violins, viola and cello). It is a good learning tool for aspiring musicians at or above a beginner's level.Technically, the piece contains several tertian harmonies and simple flares of credenza-like complexities. The form is a through composed inspiration that later becomes more refined in terms of symmetry and balance. Less technically described, Innocence was written to demonstrate the differences and the compatibility between traditional and untraditional harmonic development. Students will or should recognize the two different approaches. In the most traditional approach, the listener is typically able to predict how the melody will unfold. It is like a journey down a road where the passengers can see all the straight-aways and turns ahead. Innocence , however, while never discarding or disrespecting musical grammar, is occasionally innocently twisted to hijack the listener into gently surprising and unanticipated turns. It is a good learning tool to point out the different approaches to composition. It is also simply a fun and entertaining piece in and of itself.

By Robert Denham.Patchworks is comprised of eight short character sketches, each one unique in its manner and flavor. Styles include tango, jazz, blues, cakewalk, and waltz, although all of these are portrayed in a 20th century setting. The variety described above is reflected in the work's title, which refers to a mix and match method of composition, almost like the sewn-together rags of a patchwork quilt. Each rag has a separate history and a separate context. The piece may be played as a set, or individual movements may be extracted at the performer's discretion. We hold these truths has been a particular favorite as an encore piece.

The pieces in this group comprising Notebook for Piano were composed over many years, and were selected from a collection of approximately fifty works at this level . They are accessible to most students who have studied piano diligently for at least three to four years. Contained in these pieces are challenging techniques in rhythm, harmony, articulation, dynamics, notation, and even a challenge to hear and understand music that is not exclusively key based. However, more so than any other compositional facet, melody is always a primary concern in these pieces. Many of the pieces in Notebook for Piano have been performed by intermediate level students and by college music majors. I hope you find this collection satisfying.

This etude is designed for solid intermediate and advanced students to strengthen the inner thumb and index fingers of each hand. Until the final few measures, no pedal is to be used. In order to keep the piece smooth, the performer must move with extreme swiftness and with total confidence as there are many wide-leaping intervals. Additionally, it is important to alter neither the dynamic level nor the tempo until the ritard. Once mastered, this piece makes a wonderful, if slightly creepy, encore solo.

By Jennifer Castellano. Spectrum, Seven Preludes for Piano was inspired by a work by the American artist, Ellsworth Kelly (b. 1923). The composer writes, When I was a freshman in college, I saw his work entitled Spectrum at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The work consisted of thirteen large panels, and each contained a different color or shade of color. The first panel was yellow and the last was yellow. To me this work was a visual representation of a chromatic scale played one full octave up the piano keyboard. Five years after the magnificent sighting at the Met, I decided that I wanted to make an audio representation of the seven colors of the rainbow, each represented by a different tonality or pitch center: A being red, B orange, C yellow, D green, E blue, F indigo, and G violet. Spectrum abandons the use of the conventional major-minor key systems and instead uses a scale which the composer invented called the Castellonian Mode. In it's original form the scale is spelled C D E F G G# (or Ab) A Bb C. The sound of this new tonal system exhibits both major and minor-like qualities and yet has a new sonority of its own. The Castellonian Mode was invented in the summer of 2004 and has served as the basis of many of her tonal compositions.

By Wieslaw Rentowski. A La Mode [ French, la mode in the fashion; served with ice cream ] was commissioned by the Louisiana Music Teachers Association, as a result of the LMTA 1998 Commissioning Award Composition Contest. The composition was first performed in Lake Charles, LA by pianist Christina Ay-Chen Long ( during the 1998 LMTA Convention ), and is dedicated to her. A La Mode was conceived as a brilliant piano metaphor of French-Polish culture and is related to the composer's concept of open/universal tonality.

I was asked awhile ago to write a composition that not only laid well under the hands but was also of intermediate/advanced student level difficulty and suitable for concert performances. My initial thought was, 'impossible.' However, after careful consideration, I finally decided that it could be done. Very few teachers and performers of keyboard instruments realize that C major is the most difficult key to play. In fact, the more of the five 'black' keys employed, the easier the composition. This is due to the natural position of the hand and length of the fingers. In the end, the key of E-flat major with its relative minor of C-minor was chosen with a brief foray into the realm of E-flat minor. The end result was this effervescent and intoxicating waltz. Once mastered, this composition nearly plays itself and can then be utilized as a show-stopping encore.

As with my other woodwind quartets (The Last Rose of Summer & Flow Gently, Sweet Afton) each instrument is given time to shine. This particular piece is geared only for the most advanced students and professionals. Pay close attention to the tempi, dynamics, ritardando, and accelerando markings. This composition makes an excellent concert filler as well as a remarkable encore.

This piece titled track was inspired by a quote often credited to Henry David Thoreau: As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives. The piece was written for and premiered by Sarah Cahill. track is dedicated to my good friend, Danny Clay.

My first piano sonata was started when I was in college, but was recently revised. The main key is B-flat Major, with the first theme of the first movement being a fanfare. The second theme is more lyrical in nature, in D-flat Major. After an exposition repeat, the development deals mostly with the fanfare material. The recapitulation is by-the-book, with a sudden, surprising coda. The slow movement, placed second, has the character of a chaconne, using two different major scales in the treble and bass clefs. The tempo quickens to a dance, and an explosive climax. From out of the ashes comes the beginning of the piece, modified from it's original state. The scherzo played rather fast, mostly in octaves. There is a short trio which was influenced by Prokofiev's Fifth symphony. After the dacapo, the movement disappears into thin air. The last movement is a Rondo. The material for the A section is taken from the opening measures of the piece. The B and C sections are developments of the other themes of the first movement. The sonata ends with much finality.

I was introduced to Scott Joplin's ragtime by my piano instructor. I fell in love with Joplin’s rags and became steeped in his style of music. Although I learned many of his rags, I found them quite challenging to play. Later, when I started composing, I decided I'd write good ragtime pieces that were accessible to intermediate level players like myself. I hope I have achieved this goal and that you enjoy playing my ragtime piano pieces.
