Bartók's Mikrokosmos has been one of the milestones in pedagogical piano repertoire for 80 years - and yet it is also far more than a classical piano primer. These 153 piano pieces, organized in ascending order of difficulty, engage not only with technical aspects of piano playing but also with the fundamentals of composition - from Imitation and Inversion, Ostinato, and Free Variations, concerning compositional technique, to mood pieces and pieces with programmatic ideas such as Notturno, Boating, From the Diary of a Fly, or the famous Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm. Mikrokosmos first appeared in 1940 in six volumes. Based on volume 40 of the Bartók CompleteEdition published in 2020(Z. 15040), the present Urtext edition offers the series gathered in three volumes. This edition includes Bartók's preface, exercises, and notes written for the first edition. Furthermore, it also features a preface and comments by the editor, which not only discuss the genesis and the compositional sources but also provide performers, teachers and pupils alike, with authentic and detailed information about Bartók's notation and the specific performing problems of Mikrokosmos.

BachScholar Editions Vol. 86: BACH MEETS RAGTIME: 10 Four-Part Chorales Arranged (Volume 2) (41 pages) was born out of classic ragtime and related style improvisations on selected four-part chorales by J.S. Bach. These arrangements transform Bach’s short chorales into exciting and idiomatic concert pieces for piano while fully retaining the chorales’ original melodies and harmonies. Styles encountered in this collection include two-step rags, cake walk, waltz, etude, cool swing, march macabre, and hoedown. The ten pieces have been assembled in a strategic order so that they may be played in succession as an effective concert cycle. In addition, they may be played singly or in pairs and groups as the performer sees fit. A complete performance lasts approximately 36 minutes. This collection is ideal for piano students, teachers, and concert artists who seek fresh, new, and creative material for study and performance. Keyboard/Theory Published by: BachScholar.

Kalevi Aho's Piano Concerto No. 2 is scored for a string orchestra comprising just twenty players. The first performance took place at the concluding concert of the 2003 Mantta Music Festival, in Vilppula Church on 29th June. The soloist was Antti Siirala and the strings of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra were conducted by Osmo Vanska. The demanding piano writing is primarily a consequence of Siirala's remarkable command of the 'Beethovenian-Lisztian-Brahmsian' pianistic tradition. At times the piano part is lean and linear, but the work also contains multi-layered, full-toned piano textures and massive rolling octaves. The concerto requires great artistry on the part of the performer. The Second Piano Concerto lasts roughly half an hour and comprises three untitled movements played without a break. The first movement and the finale are extremely fast; these outer movements contain plenty of playful music. The slow second movement is more serious in tone, and its piano texture is very ample. The difficult cadenza at the end of the finale brings more serious emotions to the coda as well.

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) originally wrote this work for solo piano and orchestra under the title Scherzo in D minor in 1886 for conductor and pianist Hans von Bülow, a large influence on Strauss' career. Von Bülow, however, consider the work a complicated piece of nonsense and wanted nothing to do it. Discouraged, Strauss set the work aside until 1889, when he met Scottish pianist Eugen d'Albert, who liked it while also suggesting some changes. With a new title, Burleske, and a dedication to d'Albert, the work was premiered on June 21st, 1890 in Eisenach at the Tonkünstlerfest with d'Albert at the piano and Strauss conducting. Despite this, Strauss remained convinced that the work lacked merit and refused to have the work published until 1894, although it eventually became one of his favorite works. Strauss never gave the work an opus number, but many consider it to be Op. 11, which is actually assigned to his Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Piano. This is the solo piano and orchestra piano reduction.

Despite a strong vocation for the cello, which he studied and began to play with a distinctive character, Pau Casals, like most ambitious, creative musicians, wrote at the piano and for the piano, as it is the ultimate teaching instrument, summarising the full vision of the creative process. Any creative musician habitually worked at the piano, whether for this instrument alone or for piano accompanied by other solo instruments. To date, it has not been possible to document whether Casals had systematic training on this instrument, although at that time it was more common than it is today because, considering its qualities of timbre and combination, it was particularly attractive for creating test pieces and different kinds of compositions. The piano works contained in this second volume include part of the salon repertoire, a continuation of the first volume, and four sardanas for piano of diverse origin: some are reductions of more complex forms and others sketches for instrumental groups. In the first group, some works intended for children are published, a demonstration of the tenderness the ‘cellist felt for the children of his closest friends. In the second case, the sardanas are works from his first exile in Prada and show the nostalgia of the composer, away from his country against his will.In general, the works are not especially complex; their purpose and nature are diverse. They come in the context of salon music, with the appearance of creative entertainments characterised by a basically tonal, transparent language with a widespread tendency to modulate to nearby keys more as a momentary expressive resource than as a structural evolutionary procedure. They show a lack of systematic work on the instrument as well as the commonplaces of piano composition of their time. In some of these works, the piano thread breaks, the works do not have the thrust of finished products; the occasional appearance of chords that are difficult or impossible to finger leads us to think of intentions closer to test pieces than to products intended for normal performance. But not all these piano works are circumstantial. There is also a prelude and a minuet of a certain piano writing complexity.

Inspired by the Chinese Zodiac animals, Ho tailored this book of twelve piano compositions to the educational needs of students in Levels 2 to 7 of the Royal Conservatory of Music Piano Series. Ho devoted much time to researching the animals legends, personality traits, and cultural significance, as well as their distinguishing physical languages so as to capture their musical spirit and recreate their physical/gestural languages in pianistic form. In addition, he incorporates many sounds, harmonies, and performance techniques learned from his years of researching (and composing for) Chinese traditional instruments.

This unique collection of Indian character pieces reveals a genre that has been neglected for many years, with much of the music having been out of print since the 1920's. Musically, the pieces are appealing to play and are a fascinating reflection of social and political issues our nation was facing at the turn of the 20th century. Contains detailed historical notes on this nearly forgotten aspect of American classical music, along with supplementary fingerings and practice suggestions added throughout by editor Stephanie Bruning, professor at Morgan State University, who is both a celebrated piano performer and expert in piano pedagogy.
