Jorg Birkenkotter im Gesprach mit Carolin Naujocks (DeutschlandRadio Berlin, Juli 1994) zum Klavierstuck Schwebung und Strenge: Das Stuck ist ziemlich gefahrlich ..., wenn man es nicht in einem ganz guten Raum hort, mit einer Akustik, in der man wirklich diese Nachhallsachen alle hort, dann kann man ganz schnell sagen, dass ist so traditionelle Wiener Schule-Musik ... Und wenn man dahinter hort, dann hort man eben schon, dass all diese traditionellen Klavier-Figurationen, die so an der Oberflache da sind, standig diese Nachhall-Welt auslosen. Und die ist dann eben doch eine andere, die dahinter ist. Aber es ist eben beides und es halt sich ... in Schach irgendwie. Zumindest am Anfang hort man ganz aufmerksam zu ... sonst hort man nur die virtuose Oberflache. ... Ich wollte nur auf den Tasten spielen: Also ganz normales, konventionelles Klavierspiel, das ist das eine. Und dann, was das auslost bzw. wo das aufgefangen wird ..., da fangt die Klangspielerei an, die vom traditionellen Klavierspiel wegfuhrt. Bezug zur Tradition ist riskant. Aber das macht ja auch nichts. Mir wurde es naturlich etwas ausmachen, wenn das umkippt zur falschen Seite, wenn es doch eben nicht die Ohren auf eine neue Art von Wahrnehmung richtet, was ich schon mochte. Ich will nur nicht die neue Wahrnehmung in irgend einer Wuste suchen, die es, glaube ich, auch gar nicht mehr gibt ... Ich glaube nicht, dass das ein vermittelnder Ansatz ist: Es geht von bestimmten Dingen aus und versucht dann, woanders hin zu kommen. Was soll ich vermitteln: Tradition und Avantgarde? Es ist eine ganz komische Sache: Ich habe Lust, ganz abseits von diesen Sachen etwas auszuprobieren, Sachen zu machen, die ich noch gar nicht gemacht habe, dass diese Sachen bis zu einem gewissen Grad ausgereizt sind. Das ist jetzt alles Spekulation: Da muss ich selbst abwarten, was mit mir passiert. NORA’S DANCE is a jazz-influenced rag from 1921, and among the only surviving compositions by Nora Douglas Holt. A charming and exciting work rejuvenated by Lara Downes’ 2021 recording for the Rising Sun label, the rag is both a fun 2 minutes for pianists and audiences, and also a fascinating time capsule. Composed several years after Scott Joplin’s death, and several years before the Charleston pervaded popular music, NORA’S DANCE blossoms with the energy and jazz harmony starting to emerge as The Roaring 20’s, using ragtime and stride as the seed for pianistic style.
My own life in music has been driven by a quest to find strong female role models, trails to follow, shoulders to stand on. In Nora Douglas Holt, I find an inspiring example of creativity, independence, and resilience – with a dash of troublemaking. She was a free spirit, a force of nature, and she lived a fascinating and eventful life on her own terms. She reinvented herself through five marriages and at least as many careers. From her beginnings at the piano at age four, she explored many avenues of musical expression – performing, composing, music journalism, broadcasting, teaching – all with inventiveness, style, and zeal.She made the most of the Roaring ’20s, as an artist, socialite, jetsetter, muse, and patroness of the Harlem Renaissance. In 1921 she started an independent arts journal called “Music and Poetry,” where the charming piano solo Nora’s Dance was first published. I think the piece captures beautifully, in a little under 2 minutes, the energy and excitement of those heady years.In 1926, Nora left New York to travel the world, performing in nightclubs throughout Europe and Asia. She put her belongings in storage before she left, and when she came back she discovered that many of her things had been stolen, including more than 200 of her musical compositions. She never composed again.When the Depression hit, she moved out to Los Angeles, where she studied music education at USC, taught music in the LA public schools, and opened her own beauty salon. She returned to New York in the ’40s and worked as a music critic for several major newspapers, then launched yet another career, this time in broadcasting. Her popular radio concert series “Nora Holt’s Concert Showcase” broadcast to New York’s classical music audience, with a focus on Black composers and performers.Ahead of her time, larger than life, full of ideas…. Morton Gould composed brilliantly for orchestra, Broadway, film, television, ballet and piano. He became nationally recognized through his work in radio, where he introduced many of his own compositions in a light, distinctly American style. This arrangement of his Pavanne, from Symphonette No. 2, is for 2 pianos, and it is unusually bright and sprightly (and almost jazzy) for what is traditionally a slower and statelier dance form. It aims to evoke key aspects of Venus -- of imperiousness, of being 'under the spell', as it were -- together with planetary movement in outer space. Repeated notes evoke, perhaps, satellite radio signals and movement, mythic names in Morse code or just a vague communicative presence.

In ,,Beds and Brackets gibt es ein Stuck im Stuck: Statement zu einem Faustschlag Nonos. Kurz vor seinem Tod war ich mit Nono zusammen in einer Kompositionswettbewerbs-Jury. Wahrend dieser Tage schlug er manchmal mit der Faust schwere, massige Rhythmen elementarster Proportion auf den Tisch. Vierfaches Forte. Diese Befreiungsschlage hafteten die ganze Zeit wahrend der Arbeit an Statement in meinem Gedachtnis. Sie waren ganz aus dem Nahbereich des Machens und Wahrnehmens geboren. Solcher Nahbereich menschlicher Sinnenwelt ist auch musikalisches Ausfuhrungs- und Hormodell des ubrigen Stuckes. Die jeweiligen Tone werden aus der 88-tastigen Klaviatur aufgrund von Bewegungsentwurfen abgerufen, deren Streckenmasse und Geschwindigkeiten, multipliziert mit den jeweils zu bewegenden Organ(gewicht)en, Ton und Harmonik charakterisieren. Der horizontale, zeitliche Verlauf des Stuckes verwirrt zeitweise die Nahbereichswahrnehmung durch Wiederholung. In der Partitur zeigen numerierte Klammern das jeweilige Notentextfragment an, das an einer anderen Stelle in den musikalischen Verlauf eingeschoben werden soll, und zwar so, als wurde es zum ersten Mal erklingen. Es geht also nicht um psychisch-dynamische Weiterspinnung, sondern um eine live simulierte Wiederholung von Vergangenem, als ware es gar nicht vergangen. Derartige horizontale Bewegungsentwurfe betonen an Wiederholung eher das Fremde, Sprengende, nicht das Zusammenhangschaffende. Gegen Ende argumentiert der korperliche Nahbereich, schlagt um in ,,Umgebung: Lauft da nicht ein Radio, ein Fernseher, ein Kuhlschrank? Geht da nicht ein Wind draussen? Fahrt nicht ein Auto? Spielen da nicht Kinder? Tonbander sind nur eine schwache Simulation! Im Optimalfall sollen Fenster und Turen des Konzertsaales geoffnet und wieder geschlossen werden. (Nicolaus A.
