The b-minor Sonata is part of a group of six piano sonatas which, according to Haydn's own handwritten catalogue of works, was composed in 1776. The autograph has not survived, and the first edition of 1778 was not authorised. However, numerous copyist's manuscripts have survived in which Haydn had his six sonatas disseminated. The separate Urtext edition from the volumes containing Haydn's complete piano sonatas presents this transmission, which is quite typical for the composer, in a way that is optimally comprehensible for every Haydn enthusiast. The musical text, edited according to all the rules of the art on the basis of the Haydn Complete Edition, is supplemented by ergonomic fingerings by Stephen Hough – and thus offers the ideal conditions to discover this treasure among Haydn's sonatas.

This book presents pianists and ambitious amateur musicians with unfamiliar, surprisingly flamboyant and often witty compositions. These piano works are by one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth Century, one of the most recent all-roundmusical grand masters: Alexis Weissenberg, who was born in Sofia on 26 July 1929 and died in Lugano on 8 January 2012.This first edition includes all Weissenberg's surviving completed piano works, apart from those written for two pianos and for pianoduet, stage works and the Romance for piano and violin. Fingerings and pedal markings by Alexis Weissenberg are printed in italics (fingerings and allocation of notes between hands, too) or in large type (pedal markings); recommendations added by the editor are shown in roman font (fingerings and allocation of notes between hands) or in smaller type (pedal markings).

Simon (Polish: Szymon) Laks, born in Warsaw in 1901, had worked in Paris since 1926, where he stood out as one of the most importantrepresentatives of Polish modernism in the context of the Groupe de Six and the Ecole de Paris. Promoted by Szymanowski and inspiredby Ravel, he amalgamated neoclassicism of French provenance with elements of Polish folk music tradition and influences from jazz. Laks work was dramatically interrupted by internment and deportation. He survived Auschwitz as a member and leader of a camp chapel, to which he gave poignant testimony in his book Music in Auschwitz (978-3-7931-4082-5). The piano pieces, which were createdindependently of one another and are summarized as a cycle in this volume, reflect the stylistic range of Laks oeuvre, his typical juggling with the levels E and U and his own profound sense of humor. Simon Lak's 'oeuvre, which is attracting increasing international attention, is published exclusively by Boosey & Hawkes.

Simon Laks (1901-1983), who moved from Warsaw to Paris in 1926 at the age of 25, belonged to the large group of composers from Central and Eastern European countries who went down in 20th-century music history as the “École de Parisâ€. Slavic temperament amalgamated in their music with French esprit, the folklore of their native countries combined with the stylistic elements of neoclassicism and jazz typical of the time. As a member of the “Association of Young Polish Musiciansâ€, Laks quickly made his way into French musical life. However, his career was ended with the beginning of World War 2 due to the collaboration of the Vichy government with Nazi Germany. Internment in 1941 was followed by deportation to Auschwitz in 1942. Laks survived the Shoah as a member and later leader of a camp band in Birkenau, which he testified to in his moving book Music in Auschwitz. After the traumatic experiences, Laks did not return to regular compositional activity until the 1960s, producing an opera, songs, and chamber music works, some of which were awarded important composition prizes. At the peak of this optimistic creative phase, he composed incidental music for Peretz Hirschbein's famous Yiddish comedy Dem Schmids Techter (The Blacksmith's Daughters), which premiered in New York in 1918, for a new production of the play at the Théâtre de lÂ’Entrepôt in Paris. Along with Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes and Shostakovich's cycle From Yiddish (Jewish) Folk Poetry, it is one of the most significant 20th-century explorations of art music with Jewish folklore – homage to a culture irreparably destroyed. From the original score, Holger Groschopp compiled two suites, for violoncello and piano and piano solo, that capture the essence of Lak's enchanting drama music. The premiere recording of the suites with Holger Groschopp and Adele Bitter was awarded the Opus Klassik 2023 in the category Editorial Achievement of the Year.

This first print is a rarity: the highly virtuoso, evocative 'Nocturne' owes its creation to an instrument that has only survived as a museum piece. Gustave Lyon, the director of the French instrument maker Pleyel, commissioned Charles Koechlin as well as several other French composers (such as Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel) to write works for the 'harpe chromatique' developed by him around 1900. In contrast to the common pedal harp, the chromatic harp allows for an unlimited modulatory range. Nevertheless, the instrument did not gain much acceptance and remained exotic. Koechlin was aware of the difficulty of introducing and establishing new instruments. He therefore, from the very beginning, had the piano as an alternative of equal value in mind when writing his Nocturne.

NORA’S DANCE is a jazz-influenced rag from 1921, and among the only surviving compositions by Nora Douglas Holt. A charming and exciting work rejuvenated by Lara Downes’ 2021 recording for the Rising Sun label, the rag is both a fun 2 minutes for pianists and audiences, and also a fascinating time capsule. Composed several years after Scott Joplin’s death, and several years before the Charleston pervaded popular music, NORA’S DANCE blossoms with the energy and jazz harmony starting to emerge as The Roaring 20’s, using ragtime and stride as the seed for pianistic style. My own life in music has been driven by a quest to find strong female role models, trails to follow, shoulders to stand on. In Nora Douglas Holt, I find an inspiring example of creativity, independence, and resilience – with a dash of troublemaking. She was a free spirit, a force of nature, and she lived a fascinating and eventful life on her own terms. She reinvented herself through five marriages and at least as many careers. From her beginnings at the piano at age four, she explored many avenues of musical expression – performing, composing, music journalism, broadcasting, teaching – all with inventiveness, style, and zeal. She made the most of the Roaring ’20s, as an artist, socialite, jetsetter, muse, and patroness of the Harlem Renaissance. In 1921 she started an independent arts journal called “Music and Poetry,†where the charming piano solo Nora’s Dance was first published. I think the piece captures beautifully, in a little under 2 minutes, the energy and excitement of those heady years. In 1926, Nora left New York to travel the world, performing in nightclubs throughout Europe and Asia. She put her belongings in storage before she left, and when she came back she discovered that many of her things had been stolen, including more than 200 of her musical compositions. She never composed again. When the Depression hit, she moved out to Los Angeles, where she studied music education at USC, taught music in the LA public schools, and opened her own beauty salon. She returned to New York in the ’40s and worked as a music critic for several major newspapers, then launched yet another career, this time in broadcasting. Her popular radio concert series “Nora Holt’s Concert Showcase†broadcast to New York’s classical music audience, with a focus on Black composers and performers.Ahead of her time, larger than life, full of ideas…. I am so pleased to introduce you to the feisty and free spirited Nora Douglas Holt!

Edward MacDowell can be regarded as the first great American composer, although he disliked the idea of being classified as any sort of musical nationalist. He composed a large number of orchestral works but it is the charming and unpretentious suite of musical miniatures, Woodland Sketches, that has survived as his best-known work, with To a Wild Rose being the most popular.

The content of this volume consists partly of works that have survived in the composer's manuscript and are now published for the first time, and partly of the original versions of pieces that were published during Liszt's lifetime but later reworked. Of the earlier versions connected with Years of Pilgrimage, 2nd Year, Italy, the most noteworthy are the two completed versions of the Dante sonata, which are now appearing in print for the first time. Further important compositions belonging to the Italy cycle are the Petrarch sonnets. The first versions of these that we are publishing were actually published by the composer, and he also included them in his concert repertoire.Another particularly significant piece being published for the first time is the Freischütz fantasia, a characteristic, fine example of the type of opera fantasia Liszt developed at the beginning of the 1840s. Of the waltzes that feature in this volume, in addition to the first version of the concert pieces - the Grande valse di bravura and the Valse mélancolique - we have also included three complete, technically less demanding little pieces that Liszt intended primarily as mementos.

The Haffner symphony was composed at the request of Leopold Mozart for the celebrations at the ennoblement of Wolfgang’s childhood friend, Sigmund Haffner, in Salzburg on 29 July 1782. Mozart was under considerable pressure at this time with, amongst other professional commitments, preparations for the opening performance of Die Entfühtung aus dem Serail on 16 July, and the necessary arrangements for his forthcoming marriage to Constanze on 4 August. It is unclear from the surviving evidence (the relevant correspondence between Wolfgang and Leopold at this period is incomplete) whether the symphony arrived at Salzburg in time for the Haffner celebrations. The symphony was first performed in Vienna, under Mozart’s direction, at the Hofburgtheater on 23 March 1783 in the presence of the Emperor.

Ilmari Hannikainen (1892-1955) was the most important Finnish pianist during the first decades of the 1900s. In his lifetime he also was one of the country's most famous composers. Hannikainen studied composition with Erkki Melartin, Franz Schreker and Maximilian Steinberg. His piano techers include Elli Rangman-Bjorlin and Alexander Siloti. Piano Sonata C minor Op. 1 was completed in 1912, and is one of the largest-scale romantic piano compositions in the Finnish piano repertoire. The work is a joyride of flowing national romanticsm filled with youthful energy. Some technical influence from Chopin and Liszt is evident, as is from master Sibelius, the major figure in Finnish music at the time. The Piano Sonata is published now for the first time - and directly as an Urtext edition. Pianist Dmus Risto-Matti Marin and music engraver Jani Kyllonen have studied all surviving manuscript sources, resulting in a worthy edition of this great work for piano.

Composed in 1834, Liszt's Grand duo is based on material from three pieces from the first book (op. 19b) of Mendelssohn's Songs without Words (no. 1 in E major, no. 6 in G minor, and no. 3 in A major). While Liszt made an almost literal transcription of the first piece, he gave the second and third pieces a much freer arrangement, in the style of concert paraphrases. The large-scale concert piece was premiered by Liszt and Chopin on Christmas Day 1834 in a salon in Paris. The Grand duo was not published in Liszt's lifetime, and has survived as a draft.Schubert's Fantasy in C major (also known as the Wanderer Fantasy) was a defining musical experience for the young Liszt. He arranged this masterpiece of Romantic piano literature for piano and orchestra in 1851, at the beginning of his Weimar period, and it was premiered by Julius Egghard in Vienna in December of that year. By 1855, Liszt had transcribed this arrangement for two pianos, because it was played on 22 October 1855 at a concert held in Weimar in honour of his birthday. With the version for piano and orchestra, Liszt attuned the fantasy to the requirements of the concert hall, reinforcing the orchestral effects inherent in Schubert's composition. His aim with the two-piano version was to achieve a similarly grand effect in spaces too small for an orchestra. The arrangement for piano and orchestra appeared in print in 1857, followed by the two-piano version in 1862.This volume comes complete with a detailed preface in English, German, and Hungarian containing new research findings, several manuscript facsimiles, and a critical report in English.

In Volume I/9 of the New Liszt Edition the definitive ten-movement version of the piano cycle Harmonies poétiques et religieuses was published in 1981. On several occasions Liszt mentioned that he attached particular importance to this cycle, and this is confirmed by the fact that he devoted almost two decades (1835-1853) to its composition. This Supplement volume of the New Liszt Edition initiates the reader into the mysteries of the cycle's genesis, publishing 17 completed pieces written for it and 6 that have survived as fragments, together with the album leaves belonging to them. The works composed between 1840 and 1848 also reflect the various concepts of the cycle and theprior history of the movements included in the final version, more than one shows Liszt's skill as an improviser. Among the compositions that survive in manuscript there are gems such as the hitherto virtually unknown Piano piece in G flat major, conceived in a moment of unselfconscious happiness. Others waiting to be discovered include the Piano piece in C minor and the enchantingly beautiful prayer, Litanies de Marie, of which two versions were written.
