Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Papillon for solo piano was first published in 1908 by Augener Ltd. Following George Augener's retirement in 1910, the work along with the whole Augener catalogue (which contained no less than 24 other works by Coleridge-Taylor), was aquired by Schott and Co. Ltd. At the time both companies occupied offices on Great Marlborough Street, London. Coleridge-Taylor was born in London and brought up in Croydon. He learnt to play the violin, was recognised as a child prodigy and at 15 was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford, where he was a contemporary of Holst and Vaughan Williams. Coleridge-Taylor described himself as “Anglo-African†and, despite support from his colleagues, faced racism throughout his whole career. In spite of this prejudice and his tragically early death in 1912 aged just 37, he enjoyed great success during his lifetimeand his music was performed at the Proms no less than 116 times between 1898 and 1939. In contrast, since 1940 his music has only been heard there on thirteen occasions to date. Like many works from this period, at some point in the past Papillon became out of print. Schott Music is now very pleased to present this new modern performing edition with errors and inconsistencies from the original edition now corrected.

Individual scenes from an old Japanese story have been set to music by the composer in the form of thirteen easy little piano pieces. The volume contains not only the pieces, but also the story (in the original Japanese, as well as Hungarian, English and German). Thus, the series can also be performed almost as a stage production: one child (as the narrator) reads the story, while at the appropriate points in the story other children play each corresponding piece. This work was published in 2009 to celebrate 140 years of Hungarian-Japanese diplomatic cooperation.

Characterized by impressionistic and modal elements with far-ranging moods, from a whimsical carnival first movement to a sad soul-searching second movement, followed by a cheery, fairytale-like third movement. In 1959, Richard Lane was twenty-six years old and he wrote his first of eleven piano sonatas. At the time, he had just finished serving in the US Army as a musician and was selected to be an inaugural member of the Young Composers Project, which was sponsored by the Ford Foundation. As part of this project, Lane was assigned to compose music for the secondary level (public schools) in Rochester, New York, where he previously graduated from the Eastman School of Music. In 1959, Lane composed twenty pieces, seven of which were for the Rochester public schools, ranging from choral and orchestral works. The remaining thirteen pieces which Lane wrote at this time were vocal and instrumental solos, as well as other orchestral and choral works, and one opera. Of the twenty pieces, three of them were for solo piano, including the Piano Sonata 1.

By Jennifer Castellano. Spectrum, Seven Preludes for Piano was inspired by a work by the American artist, Ellsworth Kelly (b. 1923). The composer writes, When I was a freshman in college, I saw his work entitled Spectrum at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The work consisted of thirteen large panels, and each contained a different color or shade of color. The first panel was yellow and the last was yellow. To me this work was a visual representation of a chromatic scale played one full octave up the piano keyboard. Five years after the magnificent sighting at the Met, I decided that I wanted to make an audio representation of the seven colors of the rainbow, each represented by a different tonality or pitch center: A being red, B orange, C yellow, D green, E blue, F indigo, and G violet. Spectrum abandons the use of the conventional major-minor key systems and instead uses a scale which the composer invented called the Castellonian Mode. In it's original form the scale is spelled C D E F G G# (or Ab) A Bb C. The sound of this new tonal system exhibits both major and minor-like qualities and yet has a new sonority of its own. The Castellonian Mode was invented in the summer of 2004 and has served as the basis of many of her tonal compositions.

The Hindemith pupil Harald Genzmer (1909-2007) worked with virtually all music genres and composed works for many, even unusual instruments (such as the trautonium). He also wrote compositions for the piano, of course, and in 1938 published a major work, Sonata No. 1. For Richards Laugs who had worked in Mannheim since 1945, first as musical director at the National Theatre, then as director of the local music academy, he wrote '3 Tanze' for piano the autograph of which was discovered among the effects of Laugs' widow only recently. These very enjoyable-to-play and melodious miniatures are published for the first time here.

“Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony, melodies and his passion for ornithology, his Catalogue of Birds for Piano is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style. Messiaen became fascinated by birdsong from an early age, however, it wasn't until the 1950s that he took his passion to a new level, incorporating birdsong in to all of his compositions. Catalogue of Birds, composed in 1958, comprises thirteen movements, each depicting a specific bird. The first volume contains the first three movements; 1) The Alpine Chough, 2) The Oriole, and 3) The Blue Merle. Catalogue of Birds is essential to all advanced pianists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire.â€.
