John La Montaine's Twelve Relationships for Piano Solo consists of twelve short canons: Bold and Plain, Teasing, Plaintive, Bittersweet, Wayward, Saucy, Entreating, Piquant, Brooding, Spirited and Jubilant. It was originally composed in 1965. A canon is the strictest form of composition, in which two or more parts take up in succession exactly the same musical subject. Each of the canons in Twelve Relationships is at a different interval. That is, the second entrance of the subject begins on a different note in each canon, and that note is always different from the first entrance. Twelve different intervals are utilized in the twelve canons. Each of these canons is strict in its succession of intervals from the first note to the last. The first canon is at the octave and therefore in one and the same key. All of the others at different intervals, since they are strict, are simultaneously in two different keys. There is no other known set of canons so composed. The title Twelve Relationships may be understood in two senses. One refers to the form, the intervallic relationships mentioned above. The other refers to the content, that is, to the psychological relationships that are implied by the titles of the individual canons and which form the musical substance of the pieces. Jocelyn Mackey (Pan Pipes, music critic): Twelve Relationships contains twelve two-part canons with titles like, Plaintive, Sprightly, Saucy, Brooding. The first, Bold and Plain, is composed with imitation at the fifth, while a different interval is used in each of the other eleven. Just as the Well-Tempered Clavier contains preludes in each possible key, each possible interval of imitation is used in this set of canons. Amazing contrapuntal skill..

Twelve Astrological Preludes were written over a period of roughly two years and several were broadcast on BBC Radio 2's Friday Night is Music Night as well as in other concerts. Aquarius was written in 1994 as a filler to apopular BBC solo piano series of the time called At the Piano. It was named Aquarius for programming purposes and as Elms left the studio the producer called after him 'Only eleven to go' and so Twelve Astrological Preludes cameinto being. The preludes, which run in the usual cycle, are based upon two melodic strands and there is one piece in each of the twelve major keys. The character and style of each prelude alludes to certaincharactertraits of its particular birth sign and each piece bears the initials of a friend born under that particular sign. Each prelude is prefaced by a printed description of some of the general characteristics deemed to beassociated with that sign. These are, of course, generalisations! Some preludes show a little deference to some of my favourite 'masters'.Elms has recorded Twelve Astrological Preludes for the Herald label and they areavailable on the CD Moody Moves together with other pieces of his chamber music including the piano sextet from which the CD takes its name. Inspired by the Chinese Zodiac animals, Ho tailored this book of twelve piano compositions to the educational needs of students in Levels 2 to 7 of the Royal Conservatory of Music Piano Series. Ho devoted much time to researching the animals legends, personality traits, and cultural significance, as well as their distinguishing physical languages so as to capture their musical spirit and recreate their physical/gestural languages in pianistic form. In addition, he incorporates many sounds, harmonies, and performance techniques learned from his years of researching (and composing for) Chinese traditional instruments.

This third solo album for piano, Go Your Own Way, is dedicated to the eternal question of which path to take in life. Twelve very emotional New Age pieces for piano take the pianist and the audience on a musical journey during which each of them follows his heart and his inner voice. The road of life is often rocky and paved with tears. And yet, everybody should take it as a fighter and leave his own mark. This requires courage and confidence in order not to despair or be broken. The bottom line of all this is that the way is the goal and that everybody has to go it. These expressive compositions are highly nuanced like piano playing, exciting, rich in contrast and exploring boundaries like life: melancholy and lamenting, comforting, affectionately soothing, motivating, confident, breath-taking, and passionate.Twelve very emotional New Age pieces for piano take the listeners on a musical journey during which each of them follows his heart and his inner voice. Austrian composer Wolfgang Gabriel (1930-) wrote his Piano Sonata Op.83 for Kimberly Davenport in 2003. The two movement work utilizes the same two twelve-tone rows in both movements. Although structured with the twelve-tone rows, the work's language is quite accessible for performer and audience alike, featuring an opening slow movement which builds in dramatic intensity, and a quick second movement which builds in excitement. There are moderate technical challenges, but the would be an easy addition to the professional pianist's repertoire, and would make an excellent challenge for a high-school or college pianist. The composer's detailed explanation of the twelve-tone rows is included with the score, to aid in the performer's analysis and understanding of the work.

These seven piano pieces, of intermediate difficulty, represent different aspects of the twelve-bar blues structure, which originated in the southern states of the USA in the mid 19th century. Each is based on the twelve-bar blues chord sequence, but responds to it in a different way, with stylistic references to the past as well as the present, providing a contrasting set of pieces which can be played as a group or individually. The fingering markings are suggestions only, and may be adapted as required.

Little Cadenzas, Canons and Preludes for Pianoforte, an album of 36 piano miniatures in all keys of the circle of fifths and in church modes, as well as two preludes by Eusebius Mandyczewski (1857-1929) that modulate through all keys, are presented here for the first time in print. Mandyczewski, who went down in music history as a Brahms friend, editor and archivist of the Vienna Musikverein, composed numerous vocal and piano works, including twelve Orthodox liturgies and two cycles of variations on themes by George Frideric Handel. The album, a birthday present from the composer to his twelve-year-old daughter Virginia, was written in the middle of the First World War and was not premiered publicly until a century later - after the manuscript was found in a Ukrainian library - at the Mandyczewski Festival in Chernivtsi (Ukraine) in 2017. Mandyczewski shows himself here as a master of the small form and counterpoint, but also as a demanding teacher - and so the pieces, once reserved for his daughter, will now be made accessible to a wider circle of young musicians to enjoy.
