Miniaturen fur Klavier is a collection of small piano pieces, each one to three minutes long and of varying difficulty. They can be played as a complete cycle, as individual pieces or as a selection in any combination. The titles of the pieces indicate content and techniques used, in part based on structural principles of the film. But the music is not reducible to it - far too often a wrong track is missing. Johannes Boris Borowski (* 1979) is an outstanding voice of new music. His interpreters include the ensemble intercontemporain, the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Staatskapelle Berlin. His works were conducted by Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Peter Eotvos, Pierre Boulez and Susanna Malkki.

This selection is intended to reveal a less-known aspect of the genius of Franz Liszt, the greatest pianist of the 19th century: as a master of piano miniatures. While his large-scale works written over many years show Liszt as a striving composer for whom the creative process was difficult, at the same time, hidden in the shadow of the monumental peaks, the 'moments musicaux' tend to capture him in the process of improvisation, at the moment when a compositional idea flashed into his mind and was first noted down. The miniatures that feature in our selection trace his creative path through six decades (1827-1885), from his youthful testing of his wings right up to his finalfarewell. The manuscript of any piece that did not later become part of a cycle or the starting-point for a larger-scale composition generally remained in the mists of obscurity as a treasured memento preserved by one of his pupils or admirers.

Die Literatur fur angehende, junge Klavierspieler, die bildhaft, expressiv, nuancenreich und serios auftritt und zugleich, bei relativ einfachem Spielniveau, hohen kompositorischen Anspruchen standhalt, ist nicht sehr umfangreich. Das Setiner Tagebuch, das 15 leichte Stucke zu zwei und vier Handen enthalt, bereichert das klavierpadagogische Repertoire durch eine gluckliche Mischung aus variablen Spieltechniken und inhaltlichen Anregungen und besticht durch seine musikantische Qualitat, die auch auf den Konzertpodium ihre Wirkung nicht verfehlt. Der kleine Ort Sezze (lateinisch: Setia) sudlich von Rom, ist seit Jahrzehnten Koerppens zweite, setiner Heimat. Hier entstanden im August 1999 die vom Licht und vom Fluidum dieser geschichtstrachtigen Landschaft gepragten Miniaturen. Klassische Mythologie, nachtliche Impressionen, einfache Formen und hintergrundiger Humor sprechen aus den Titeln, die ohne aufdringliche Programmmusik in leicht verstandliche, aber ernst zu nehmende Klaviermusik umgesetzt werden. Anknupfend an die Tradition kompetenter musikalisch-didaktischer Werke (Bach, Schumann, Bartok) werden unterschiedliche Kompositionstechniken vorgefuhrt, die auf altere und neuere tradierte Modelle verweisen. Im zwolften Stuck, Galaxis, benutzt Koerppen nicht ohne ironische Distanz sogar die Zwolftontechnik, die sonst kaum zu seinem kompositorischen Vokabular gehort.
