SEVEN DAYS is a cycle for solo piano in 21 movements, most lasting between three and seven minutes, distributed in the form of a custom app produced by the 92Y and released during their Fall 2021 season. Using the app on their phones, listeners are asked to listen to three movements a day according to an approximate schedule - one movement in the morning, one in the afternoon, and another sometime in the evening - for seven days. The music is performed by Pedja Muzijevic and presented alongside paintings by Gloria Maximo. (Please visit 92Y.org for information on how to download the Seven Days app.) The work is designed as a listening experience that tunes us into the passing of time, connecting us both to the present moment as well as the cycle of the week. The experience invites music to inhabit and structure our everyday - to find us where we are in the world. The morning-afternoonevening schedule is meant to focus participants on the dawn-to-dusk cycle as well as to create a communal listening ritual. It is also an experiment in large-scale form, designed to draw attention to musical material developing across a week-long expanse, interspersed with vast silences. SEVEN DAYS was shaped by a year spent in relative isolation due to the pandemic. While it is a work composed during a time of quarantine, it will be experienced first by an audience in the process of returning to a more normal world. In that sense, it is an artwork born out of a year of relatively cloistered existence that seeks to preserve aspects of that experience as we move forward. The piece was also inspired by the work of Morton Feldman and Chantal Akerman, whose large-scale works consider time, process, and stillness. Their art struck me with a fresh relevance during the silent stretches of the pandemic year 2020. It was also a year in which writings about time, penned by contemplatives like Henry David Thoreau and Thomas Merton, held new weight. All of this in turnresonated with Gloria Maximo's profound paintings, which I've long admired. SEVEN DAYS is an artwork we are invited to do - using music to point our attention to the present moment, the everyday, and the seemingly mundane. It is a piece listeners are also asked to live within as it unfolds over a week rather than to witness it live. Lullabies / Vuggeviser for Piano solo was composed by Bent Sorensen in 2000. Preface / Programme Note: Some melodies keep haunting me: they will stick in my mind, and I will walk about humming them, and they will find their way into my music. Two such melodies are the basis for the present piano piece, which I call LULLABIES. The first little tune began its life as a ballad in an operatic draft ofmine. Later on - with text by English poet Selima Hill - it became part of my songcycle ROSES ARE FALLING for mezzo soprano and piano. In the latter context it is a love song, but I have always had a lullaby-feeling about this tune, and, indeed, as a lullaby it appears in my opera UNDERTHE SKY, to text by Peter Asmussen: inthe opera, the loved one sings and hums to her beloved and make him come to rest. During LULLABIES the tune will appear a half tone lower with each entry, and make its way downwards through the musical texture, from upper voice to bassline. The other little melody is a true lullaby, which I hummed for my youngest daughter to try and make her go to sleep. Later on it became the backdrop for the last movement of my trombone concerto, BIRDS AND BELLS. The two melodies in their original form are reproduced at the beginning of LULLABIES. Joachim Raff's 12 piano pieces Fruhlingsboten op. 55, originating in 1852/53, mark a new creative start in his compositional oeuvre, in which the composer left behind his previously written and published piano works. The title of the work, translated as Heralds of Spring, is multilayered: It refers not only to spring in nature as expressed in the headings of the first two pieces, Winterruhe [Hibernation] and Fruhlingsnahen [Spring's Approach], but the words Heralds of Spring also indicate love's spring, the blossoming of love for his future wife, the actress Doris Genast. This appears in the headings of the pieces as of no. 3, sketching the path of an imaginary couple approaching union via various annoyances. And ultimately, Raff saw in his new piano work the harbingers of his future works, created under happy circumstances. In Fruhlingsboten Raff repeatedly demonstrates his ability to adapt idioms and compositional techniques from works by Liszt, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and others. The pieces do nonetheless possess their own thoroughly original diction with a character spectrum just as diverse as their stylistic piano design. Mahlert's new edition, as beautifully presented as ever from this publisher, is exemplary, and can easily be recommended to advanced pianists with a love of nineteenth-century repertoire. My first piano sonata was started when I was in college, but was recently revised. The main key is B-flat Major, with the first theme of the first movement being a fanfare. The second theme is more lyrical in nature, in D-flat Major. After an exposition repeat, the development deals mostly with the fanfare material. The recapitulation is by-the-book, with a sudden, surprising coda. The slow movement, placed second, has the character of a chaconne, using two different major scales in the treble and bass clefs. The tempo quickens to a dance, and an explosive climax. From out of the ashes comes the beginning of the piece, modified from it's original state. The scherzo played rather fast, mostly in octaves. There is a short trio which was influenced by Prokofiev's Fifth symphony. After the dacapo, the movement disappears into thin air. The last movement is a Rondo. The material for the A section is taken from the opening measures of the piece. The B and C sections are developments of the other themes of the first movement. The sonata ends with much finality.
