Bartók's Mikrokosmos has been one of the milestones in pedagogical piano repertoire for 80 years - and yet it is also far more than a classical piano primer. These 153 piano pieces, organized in ascending order of difficulty, engage not only with technical aspects of piano playing but also with the fundamentals of composition - from Imitation and Inversion, Ostinato, and Free Variations, concerning compositional technique, to mood pieces and pieces with programmatic ideas such as Notturno, Boating, From the Diary of a Fly, or the famous Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm. Mikrokosmos first appeared in 1940 in six volumes. Based on volume 40 of the Bartók CompleteEdition published in 2020(Z. 15040), the present Urtext edition offers the series gathered in three volumes. This edition includes Bartók's preface, exercises, and notes written for the first edition. Furthermore, it also features a preface and comments by the editor, which not only discuss the genesis and the compositional sources but also provide performers, teachers and pupils alike, with authentic and detailed information about Bartók's notation and the specific performing problems of Mikrokosmos.

Physical training and discipline are needed for both athletics and keyboard playing. Keyboard muscle conditioning is called technic. Technic exercises are as important to the keyboard player as workouts and calisthenics are to the athlete. Schaum's Fingerpower books are dedicated to development of individual finger strength and dexterity in both hands. Audio is accessed online using the unique code inside the book and can be streamed or downloaded. The audio files include PLAYBACK+, a multi-functional audio player that allows you to slow down audio without changing pitch, set loop points, change keys, and pan left or right.

For 13 students---six pianists on two pianos, three more pianists each on an electric piano (keyboard), and four percussionists playing on simple, homemade instruments. Each player represents a sound in the forest. Rather than reading a score, the musicians memorize a single gesture, or 'lick and count seconds before entering and repeating their lick. It lasts approximately 4 minutes, and will be a refreshing addition to your recitals! Check out the piece on youtube.

SEVEN DAYS is a cycle for solo piano in 21 movements, most lasting between three and seven minutes, distributed in the form of a custom app produced by the 92Y and released during their Fall 2021 season. Using the app on their phones, listeners are asked to listen to three movements a day according to an approximate schedule - one movement in the morning, one in the afternoon, and another sometime in the evening - for seven days. The music is performed by Pedja Muzijevic and presented alongside paintings by Gloria Maximo. (Please visit 92Y.org for information on how to download the Seven Days app.) The work is designed as a listening experience that tunes us into the passing of time, connecting us both to the present moment as well as the cycle of the week. The experience invites music to inhabit and structure our everyday - to find us where we are in the world. The morning-afternoonevening schedule is meant to focus participants on the dawn-to-dusk cycle as well as to create a communal listening ritual. It is also an experiment in large-scale form, designed to draw attention to musical material developing across a week-long expanse, interspersed with vast silences. SEVEN DAYS was shaped by a year spent in relative isolation due to the pandemic. While it is a work composed during a time of quarantine, it will be experienced first by an audience in the process of returning to a more normal world. In that sense, it is an artwork born out of a year of relatively cloistered existence that seeks to preserve aspects of that experience as we move forward. The piece was also inspired by the work of Morton Feldman and Chantal Akerman, whose large-scale works consider time, process, and stillness. Their art struck me with a fresh relevance during the silent stretches of the pandemic year 2020. It was also a year in which writings about time, penned by contemplatives like Henry David Thoreau and Thomas Merton, held new weight. All of this in turnresonated with Gloria Maximo's profound paintings, which I've long admired. SEVEN DAYS is an artwork we are invited to do - using music to point our attention to the present moment, the everyday, and the seemingly mundane. It is a piece listeners are also asked to live within as it unfolds over a week rather than to witness it live. The key players here are time and the listener's own surroundings, starring together alongside music and art in a wordless drama. -Gregory Spears.

The Fifth Hungarian Rhapsody, published in 1853, emerged from several earlier versions. The double character indicated in the sobriquet âHéroïde élégiaqueâ is based on the two contrary themes: a âheroicâ theme in minor and an âelegiacâ theme in major, seasoned with characteristics of Liszt's âstyle hongroisâ such as augmented seconds and sharp dotted rhythms. Thanks to the slow tempo, No. 5 is one of Liszt's less difficult rhapsodies and thus offers a wonderful introduction to these musical reminiscences of his Hungarian homeland. Involved in this Henle Urtext edition, which also takes the autograph into account for the first time, were two eminent Liszt specialists: Mária Eckhardt provided the preface, Vincenzo Maltempo the fingerings.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Papillon for solo piano was first published in 1908 by Augener Ltd. Following George Augener's retirement in 1910, the work along with the whole Augener catalogue (which contained no less than 24 other works by Coleridge-Taylor), was aquired by Schott and Co. Ltd. At the time both companies occupied offices on Great Marlborough Street, London. Coleridge-Taylor was born in London and brought up in Croydon. He learnt to play the violin, was recognised as a child prodigy and at 15 was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford, where he was a contemporary of Holst and Vaughan Williams. Coleridge-Taylor described himself as “Anglo-African†and, despite support from his colleagues, faced racism throughout his whole career. In spite of this prejudice and his tragically early death in 1912 aged just 37, he enjoyed great success during his lifetimeand his music was performed at the Proms no less than 116 times between 1898 and 1939. In contrast, since 1940 his music has only been heard there on thirteen occasions to date. Like many works from this period, at some point in the past Papillon became out of print. Schott Music is now very pleased to present this new modern performing edition with errors and inconsistencies from the original edition now corrected.

These miniatures are aimed at young advanced piano lovers - not only with regard to playing technique, but also to their handling ofmodern harmonies and tonal gestures. An important point of reference for ear and hands clearly is Claude Debussy's piano oeuvre, particularly his Preludes, Etudes and Childrens Corner. Debussy and York Holler's composition even share a modern musical poetry which does not require an extramusical programme. The five pieces are suitable for being performed separately or as many-faceted cycle.

In these pieces composed for his niece, York Holler follows prominent examples, from Schumann to Bartok, as the title suggests. Theycombine educational elements with a compositionally quite simple, yet artistically valid lyrical form. Each of these miniatures gives shape to a certain character, conveying no programme like Kinderszenen but something purely musical like march, chorale or perpetuum mobile and giving expression to it on the instrument. The independent movement of both hands is technically demanding and encouraged above all else.

Richard Wilson was born in Cleveland on May 15, 1941. He studied piano with Roslyn Pettibone, Egbert Fischer, and Leonard Shure, andcello with Robert Ripley and Ernst Silberstein. After beginning composition studies with Roslyn Pettibone and Howard Whittaker, he went on in 1959 to Harvard, studying with Randall Thompson, G.W. Woodworth, and principally with Robert Moevs, and graduating in 1963 magna cum laude. Awarded the Frank Huntington Beebe Award for study abroad, he continued studying piano with Friedrich Wührer in Munich, and composition, again with Moevs, in Rome, where he also gave piano recitals. Wilson joined the faculty of Vassar College in 1966. He was appointed to the Mary Conover Mellon Professorship of Music there in 1988, and he has served three times as chairman of the Department of Music. Wilson has been commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony, the American Symphony, the New Juilliard Ensemble, the Koussevitzky Foundation, the Fromm Foundation, Chamber Music America, the Chicago Chamber Musicians, the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation, and the Library of Congress. His works have been heard in such American musical centers as New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston, Cleveland, and Los Angeles and at the Aspen Music Festival, but also in London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Zurich, Milan, Amsterdam, Graz, Leningrad, Stockholm, Tokyo, Bogota, and a number of Australian cities. The recipient in 1992 of a Guggenheim Fellowship, he was awarded the Elise L. Stoeger Prize of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in 1994, the Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2004, and has served as composer in residence with the American Symphony Orchestra since 1992. Wilson has been praised by 21st Century Music as a “splendidly talented and highly accomplished composer whose music rewards seeking out†and by the New York Sun as “possessed of a hard-won idiom that has grown and developed over the years into a probing blend of wit, classic form, modern harmony, and impressionistic color.†Writing in the New Yorker, Andrew Porter called his String Quartet No. 3 a “richly wrought and unusual composition,†while the New York Times called it “a work of substance and expressivity ... [that] merits a place in the active repertory.â€.
