Hungarian composer, pianist and ethnomusicologist Béla Bartók (1881-1945) wrote this collection of five fairly difficult piano pieces in 1926, his 'piano year.' Although often referred to as a suite, IM FREIEN (OUT OF DOORS) appears to have not been thought of as a suite by Bartók himself. The work is a rarity also in that Bartók's works did not commonly use programmatic titles: 1. With Drums and Pipes, 2. Barcarolla, 3. Musettes, 4. Musiques Nocturnes, 5. The Chase.

Written in honor of the Béla Bartók centennial, MUSIQUE NOCTURNES is inspired by one of his most characteristic and original works, the fourth piece (by the same title), from the suite Out of Doors. Both pieces feature overlapping “night musics” – atmospheric cluster figures, sharply contrasting motifs suggesting nocturnal bird, frog, or insect sounds, and an element of human, folksong-like melody as Levinson alludes to the authentic Hungarian folksong, “Tiszán innen, Dunán túl.”.
This simple piece was written in 2015 as a birthday present for the composer’s wife, poet and fellow bird lover Nanine Valen, and is a distant sequel to Canons and Chorale, which he wrote for her in 1969. The ornithological character is an affectionate tribute as well to his teacher Olivier Messiaen. The titular birds are a highly stylized chickadee and two song sparrows.First public performance: Swarthmore College, November 13, 2016, by Marcantonio Barone, whose editorial assistance in the preparation of this edition is gratefully acknowledged. The three 'mechanical' studies of this set of five all employ a clear structural technique based on regularity. The first presents a stream of fast semiquavers in duple metre which constantly interplays with short motivic figures; the second offers a 14-bar ostinato (melody) that begins at the top of the keyboard and gradually descends to the bottom; around this ostinato a sustained counter-melody weaves. The third presents a igorous, stomping 9/8 dance rhythm which interacts with lengthening patterns in the second voice. The two 'fantastical' studies which intersperse the 'mechanical' contrast greatly with them: much freer in expression, tempo and rhythm, they evoke the outdoors and the calming presence of nature. The first moves like wafts of the breeze; the second, more complex, is the heart of the work. Its deep contemplations are several times interrupted by a modest refrain, drawing it back in the 'real world' - that of the three 'mechanical' studies which surround it. This refrain is also a mediator, its last appearance as gentle as the breeze evoked in the second study.
