The English composer Henry Purcell was born in Westminster in 1659 where he also died in 1695. Purcell was an important Baroque composer, writing both vocal and instrumental works. His compositions are still widely performed today.Westminster Suite is based on three distinct works by Purcell. The festive opening section, Fanfare, is followed by the magnificent anthem from Funeral Music for Queen Mary. Moonlight Serenade was composed in 1939, by Glenn Miller in his typically American big-band style. It was an immediate success and it even became the signature tune of Glenn Miller. The catchy melody has since been used in various films and television series. It has been performed in many styles, from romantic to swinging. The Flanders Recorder Quartet likes to play this work with a low recorder consort: tenor, F bass, C bass, great bass (each instrument then plays an octave lower). This gives the work a slightly “close harmony†feel. Here, for Recorder Quartet, is a new version of Mancini’s classic montage of symphonic and jazz writing, Baby Elephant Walk.
