“French saxophonist, Jean-Marie Londeix (b. 1932) graduated from the Paris Conservatoire with a First Prize and a Prize of Honour. As a fantastic all-around musician, he has a vast experience which makes his study books, including Scales and Modes, very well-informed. His career has taken him all over the world and many composers have written works specially for him. As an accomplished teacher of other famous saxophonists, he has deduced where the gaps in studies for the instrument are, composing six significant books of the kind. The second volume of Scales and Modes addresses scales and modes over three octaves and broken chords over three and a half octaves. Moreover, fingerings are helpfully included. For all aspiring saxophonists, Scales and Modes, compiled by renowned, contemporary saxophonist Jean-Marie Londeix, is an essential guide and aid to progression of technique on the instrument.â€.

[According to Larry Teal, the best method of learning to play the saxophone is to study with a competent teacher. Teal's studies were mostly of instruments other than the saxophone, but as a student at a Chautauqua summer session, he came under the influence of Georges Barrère, the eminent French flutist. He played bass clarinet with the Detroit Symphony, but he continued to be absorbed by the saxophone. As a result of his acquired expertise and growing reputation, he was appointed to a full-time faculty position as a saxophone teacher by the University of Michigan---the first ever to receive such an appointment from a major university. During his 21-year tenure, he attracted students from all over, thus exerting an ever-widening influence on saxophone teaching and performing.].

“To this day, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. His Brief Piece for solo Saxophone is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bozza won prizes for Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes, whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1955, Bozza's Brief Piece is to be played on the Alto Saxophone and is a virtuosic work, addressing advanced features including, complex rhythms, chromaticism, a wide range and articulation. As music educationalist, Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions, â€â€œhis works reveal melodic fluency, elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.â€â€œâ€.

Quartet for Saxophones is a piece for four saxophones composed by Alfred Desenclos in 1964, which lasts around 15 minutes and 30 seconds. Initially written for the Marcel Mule Quartet, Quartet for Saxophones is a typical French quartet, quite smooth and suave. The beginning of the piece that sets up the Soprano Saxophone against the others is quite jazzy but then it continues on to a more lyrical part, quite slow, with a simple melody. The tension is gradually built up and the finale unison is introduced quite dramatically, with some bursts of energy. This Quartet for Saxophones would fit a Quartet of advanced to professional players. Alfred Desenclos (1912-1961) is a French Composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1942. He also composed masses such as 'Messe de Requiem' and other pieces for Double Bass, Harp, Flute, Trumpet or French Horn.
