Saxophone Quartet was composed especially for presentation at the Montana Saxophone Festival and is dedicated to the festival's director, saxophonist Brooke Ferris. The first movement, Calliope, juxtaposes mechanized rhythmic patterns against legato, lyric melodies. The second movement, Chorale, explores homophonic, harmonic textures which alternate with lyric and contrapuntal passages, and was adapted from a short work composed for saxophone quartet in 1975. The last movement is a fugue. Movements: Calliope * Chorale * Fugue.

These saxophone quartets are available together with a play-along CD, offering every musician of the quartet the possibility of working on his part at home---in addition to quartet rehearsals. The written parts do not include the phrasings of the improvisations on the CD, which is meant to induce the students to imitate those phrasings. Imitation is an essential step on the students' way to learning how to phrase in jazz. These solos are by no means obligatory. The notated chords serve as a basis for those who wish to improvise and create their own solos.

He is a recipient of grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Meet the Composer West, Artist Trust, and ASCAP. His compositions and saxophone playing can be heard on recordings released by Soul Note, Palo Alto Records, the Musical Heritage Society, Vienna Modern Masters, Arizona University Recordings, Open Loop Recordings, and his own label, Yazz Recordings. James Pugh has written a short work of chamber music in one movement called Short Scherz, Quintet for Saxophone Quartet and Trombone. This music is appropriate for very advanced performers and is about 2 1/2 minutes in length. The work begins with a bouncy melody (A Theme) that works it's way up through the instruments, comes to a climax and continues on into a languid melodic section (B Theme) and works its way by adding speed and dynamics to the conclusion (A Theme repeated). This work was written for and first performed in 1989 by George Marge and the American Saxophone Quartet with Mr. Pugh.

Andante and Scherzo by Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) is a very enjoyable quartet for saxophones composed in 1938. Dedicated to the Paris quartet, this romantic piece is divided in two parts: it starts as a slow section, with a tenor solo followed by the chorus and it then jumps into an engaging quick staccato. Eugène Bozza won different prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prizes for the Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He composed several operas, chamber works and ballets among others.
