ThompsonIII: 'Day Dancer', dedicated to the dancer and choreographer Marie Lalander, as a homage: Marie wrote the line which inspired me for the title: 'Woman, oh you day dancer'.The title of the whole work is immediately intelligible if one compares the individual titles of the outer movements with the title of the middle movement.Axel Borup-Jorgensen and Marie Lalander could be said to be in rotation around Jupiter in the following sense:Axel's music has a 'shadow dancing' side, which can most clearly be heard in his works for harpsichord and double-bass - or in his work for organ. But his music has also a light side, which can be heard in 'Marin' or in 'Nordic Summer Pastorale'.Marie's dance and choreography contain both ecstatic forces of light and expressions of the suppressed and dark. The music of the middle movement on the other hand is in all ways inspired by the actual acoustic ion waves, that constantly arise through the collision of the sun wind with Jupiter's magnet field (registered by Voyager II, 1989). This movement is dedicated to Dr Jeffrey D. Thompson who made these NASA registrations publicly available in the CD-series'NASA Voyager Space Sounds'.Per Norgard.

Crossover Suite No. 1 comprises of five stylistically very diverse movements. 1. Introduction: A brisk opening leads to a bass groove on baritone saxophone. Various animated stylistic elements such as finger snaps are contrasted with 'straighter' elements familiar from march music. 2. Viennese Waltz: A waltz in a minor key, with the characteristic and unmistakable accompaniment in the Viennese style. 3. Roundabout: Roundabout is a rondo with recurring motifs and a point of rest in the adagio. 4. Stomps and Claps: As the name suggests, the work is performed with the help of hands and feet. Body percussion alternates with technically demanding passages. 5. Finale: A rapid final movement with a dolce middle part leads to a furious closing section with changes of meter and some dynamic surprises. Each movement can also stand on its own, but when performed as a complete suite this compositition shows off the full breadth and capability of a saxophone quartet.

This jazz original takes a signature lick of Dexter Gordon's and works it into prominence within two contrasting movements. The lyrics for As with Gladness Men of Old were written by Englishman William Dix (1837--1898) in the 1860s, reportedly on the day of the Epiphany while Dix was sick in bed. The tune was included in a collection of German chorales edited by Conrad Kocher and published in the 1830s. As a testimony to the flexibility of such music, the hymn is also sung during Thanksgiving under the title For the Beauty of the Earth. This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar)---rather than favoring a soprano solo with accompaniment---strives to include all of the players in the music making, particularly by distributing the melodic material. All dynamics and articulations, minimally marked, should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.

‘Bella Ciao’ originated as an Italian folk song, stemming all the way from the late 19th century. Many versions have since appeared over the years, but the song now has a new lease of life owing to a new dance adaption as well as its feature as the theme for the Netflix series ‘La Casa de Papel’, which has inspired Bert van Haagen to create this dynamic arrangement for quartet. ‘Bella Ciao’ is van oorsprong een aansprekend Italiaans volksliedje uit het einde van de 19e eeuw waar in de loop der tijd vele versies van zijn gemaakt. Nu heeft het nieuw leven ingeblazen gekregen in een dancevariant én als themasong bij de Netflixserie La Casa de Papel. Naar aanleiding daarvan creëerde Bert van Haagen dit levendige arrangement voor blazerskwartet. Bella Ciao ist ursprünglich ein italienisches Volkslied aus dem späten 19. Jahrhundert. Im Laufe der Jahre sind zahlreiche Versionen erschienen, aber das Lied ist jetzt durch eine neue Tanzadaption und die Verwendung als Thema für die Netflix-Serie La casa de papel“ (Haus des Geldes“) wieder aufgelebt. Matt Evans is a saxophonist in the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” He is a founding member of the Zzyzx Quartet, Project Fusion and the Eastman Saxophone Project (ESP), and is a laureate of the Fischoff, Plowman, Coleman, J.C. Arriaga, and MTNA competitions.
One of the most pleasant surprises I’ve had in my composing life was my accidental discovery of the Zzyzx Quartet’s arrangement of this etude. If asked, I would have never thought that my piece could be adapted to the medium of the sax quartet! But Matt Evans’ ingenuity as an arranger, coupled with a genuinely masterful performance which managed to capture the true spirit of the work, convinced me completely. Written in tribute to all mothers, but especially the composer's mother Florilyn, who died at the age of 90 in 2008, each of the four movements in this grade 3 suite may be performed independently of the others with excellent results. Movement 1 is a plaintive waltz with lush romantic harmonies. Movement 2 is a comedic interpolation featuring portions of two etudes by Muzio Clementi and the tick-tick sound of the typewriter. Conflict, reconciliation, resolution, and acceptance is the conveyed essence of movement 3. For Ravel, the year 1917 was marked by his mother's death and the death of many of his friends who lost their lives in World War I. In 1989 when Louis Andriessen was teaching at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Miles Davis Autobiography was published.While reading it, he suddenly knew what the subject of his piece for the Kronos Quartet should be - early be-bop licks and especially the work of Charlie Parker. He wanted to do the impossible - be-bop is not at all idiomatic for string instruments. But be-bop had been an important influence on his musical development when he was young, and he decided to do something with this music from his youth. Basically the essence of Charlie Parkers playing is the extremely fast tempo. This fast tempo is really fast, because the playing is based upon the chord structure of existing melodies which are sometimes played two or three times as fast as normal. Parker needed speed to express what he musically felt: little time was left for him. This is the main explanation of the title of the work.In the beginning of Facing Death, Andriessen literally quotes fragments of Charlie Parker improvisations. He also quotes one original melody: Ornithology (which is based on How High the Moon). The 7th and 8th bars of Ornithology become an important motif inthe piece. The whole composition is one long development in Parker's fast tempo. This work was composed in 1990 for string quartet and later arranged for saxophone quartet.

A Klezmer Wedding is a set of four dances, newly-composed but based on traditional models. The Doina is an expressive chant for three successive soloists; it twists and turns with the wailing lament of a shepherd's pipe. Next follows the Hora, a slow Rumanian dance in three with a mood that reflects the wedding's solemn vows. A Chusidl, with a moderate speed and bouncy rhythms, gets the party to the dance floor. The concluding Freylach (happy, but still in a minor key!) takes the bride, groom, and guests to the edge of frenzy. Titles: Chusidl * Doina * Hora * Freylach.
