Etude IV. from 12 Etudes in All the Minor Keys. Arranged for saxophone quartet by Matt Evans.
Matt Evans is a saxophonist in the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” He is a founding member of the Zzyzx Quartet, Project Fusion and the Eastman Saxophone Project (ESP), and is a laureate of the Fischoff, Plowman, Coleman, J.C. Arriaga, and MTNA competitions.
One of the most pleasant surprises I’ve had in my composing life was my accidental discovery of the Zzyzx Quartet’s arrangement of this etude. If asked, I would have never thought that my piece could be adapted to the medium of the sax quartet! But Matt Evans’ ingenuity as an arranger, coupled with a genuinely masterful performance which managed to capture the true spirit of the work, convinced me completely. I am so happy to have a small part in contributing to the sax quartet literature! - Marc-Andre Hamelin

Writing these arrangements, Frank Reinshagen has created little masterpieces, which broaden the rhythmical and harmonic context of the original tunes in an interesting manner without detracting from their archaic and melancholic character. These original tunes have been borrowed from the Irish, Scottish, and Gaelic musical tradition. These through-composed arrangements are rather easy to perform from the rhythmical and technical point of view, yet they are quite demanding in respect of the key they are written in, their intonation and, especially, their interpretation. Their different instrumentations are fully compatible with each other and, due to their overall structure, they are also suitable to be played with multi-scored parts. The interpretation of 'S mo lamh air a stiuir---the song of a helmsman living on the Isle of Skye---should be interpreted with the musicians paying careful attention to its dynamics and phrasing, which reflect the up-and-down motion of the stormy Artic Ocean. For this arrangement the key D minor---which is one whole tone lower than the original---has been chosen to make sure that the piece is playable, especially for a clarinet quartet.

The Latin-influenced piece consists of the theme (ABC), interlude, soprano and tenor saxophone solos, interlude, theme, a coda featuring the soprano, and culminates with the final cadenza. The soloists may either improvise or play the notated transcriptions. Solo sections may be opened up for additional choruses. Heiner Wiberny wrote this melodious and rhythmically spirited compositon for his son Julian. The Latin-Influenced piece was inspired by his collaboration as multiinstrumentalist with the WDR Big Band in Cologne during productions with Paquito D'Rivera, Bob Mintzer and Andy Narell. The piece consists of the theme (ABC), interlude, soprano and tenor saxophone solos, interlude, theme, a coda featuring the soprano, and culminates with the final cadenza. The soloists my either improvise or play the notated transcriptions of the composer. Solo sections may be opened up for additional choruses. Jolly Old Saint Nicholas is an American traditional carol by an anonymous composer. St. Nicholas is associated with a priest serving in Asia Minor who was consecrated as Archbishop in Myra, then was made a patron Saint of the Russian Orthodox Church. Legend has it that he was generous and kind to children and practiced gift giving in secrecy at night. This charming, gentle tune blends well with Pachelbel's Canon in D, and performers are urged not to take a beginning tempo too fast that would rush the coming eighth notes. This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar), rather than favoring a soprano solo with accompaniment, strives to include all the players in the music making, particularly by distributing melodic material. In addition, all dynamics and articulations should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.

This arrangement underscores the expressive and gloomy sonority of this work even more than the original version for string quartet does.

Arachnophobia - fear of spiders - is the title of one of Maxime Aulio's first compositions for saxophone quartet (SATB). It is a simple musical amusement and a humorous allusion to the composer's fear of spiders. Come forth intrepid saxophone players!

There is more light in this room when you are here is a fervently optimistic mood piece embodying the core themes of my song cycle The Lustful Mother. The title refers to another person - maybe a lover, child or friend - whose existence makes life more meaningful. In the first movement, the music wanders through the twilight, and the solitary recitation of the tenor sax is framed by answering sighs from the soprano and alto. In the second movement, the full quartet joins in the same hopeful song, that, endlessly swaying and discreetly circling, fills the whole space with its light. The work was commissioned by the Arcis Saxophone Quartet, to which it is dedicated.

An adventurous and unusual work for Saxophone Quartet by John Harle. Composed fopr the Myrha Quartet, the piece was first performed on BBC Radio 3 in 1980. The music follows a pitch centre progression, moving gradually from low to high using chromatic clusters surrounding each pitch. Sporadic solo passages, differing in character to the rest of the piece, are used to punctuated the music with cadenza-like solos from each Saxophonist in turn, making this an exciting and challenging work for all players involved. This title is the score.

Per Norgard DANCERS AROUND JUPITERI: 'Shadow Dancer', dedicated to Axel Borup-Jorgensen, as my birthday greeting on the composer's 70th birthday 22.11.94II: 'Jupiter Waves', dedicated to Dr. Jeffrey D. ThompsonIII: 'Day Dancer', dedicated to the dancer and choreographer Marie Lalander, as a homage: Marie wrote the line which inspired me for the title: 'Woman, oh you day dancer'.The title of the whole work is immediately intelligible if one compares the individual titles of the outer movements with the title of the middle movement.Axel Borup-Jorgensen and Marie Lalander could be said to be in rotation around Jupiter in the following sense:Axel's music has a 'shadow dancing' side, which can most clearly be heard in his works for harpsichord and double-bass - or in his work for organ. But his music has also a light side, which can be heard in 'Marin' or in 'Nordic Summer Pastorale'.Marie's dance and choreography contain both ecstatic forces of light and expressions of the suppressed and dark. The music of the middle movement on the other hand is in all ways inspired by the actual acoustic ion waves, that constantly arise through the collision of the sun wind with Jupiter's magnet field (registered by Voyager II, 1989). This movement is dedicated to Dr Jeffrey D. Thompson who made these NASA registrations publicly available in the CD-series'NASA Voyager Space Sounds'.Per Norgard.
