Soloists, Mixed choir, Orchestra SKU: BA.BA10726-01 Oratorio in three parts. Composed by George Frideric Handel. Edited by Michael Pacholke. This edition: Complete edition. Linen. Complete edition, Score. HWV 46. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA10726-01. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA10726-01). ISBN 9790006575596. 33 x 26 cm inches. Text Language: Italian. Preface: Pacholke, Michael. In the brief half-year period from August 14, 1736, to January 27, 1737, Georg Friedrich Handel achieved an unprecedented level of productivity in his opera compositions, creating three operas. Additionally, in March 1737, he also composed a largely new oratorio titled â??Il trionfo del Tempo e della Verità â? (â??The Triumph of Time and Truthâ?) HWV 46b. The libretto of this oratorio closely corresponds to that of the oratorio â??La Bellezza ravveduta nel trionfo del Tempo e del Disingannoâ? (â??Beauty Reconciled in the Triumph of Time and Enlightenmentâ?) HWV 46a written in 1707. With â??La Bellezza ravvedutaâ?, Handel composed an allegorical and particularly dramatic oratorio right at the beginning of his oratorio compositions. In this work, there is no chorus inclined towards reflection. Not only do the four allegorical figures, Bellezza (Beauty), Piacere (Pleasure), Tempo (Time), and Disinganno (Enlightenment), listen to each other and react to the ideas presented by the others, but this prevailing dramatic principle of dispute is also found in the recitatives.
In 1737, when reworking the oratorio material as â??Il trionfo del Tempo e della Verità â?, Handel approached the task pragmatically. He needed a new non-dramatic work to fulfill the eveningâ??s program for his audience at the Covent Garden Theatre during the fasting season when theatrical performances were prohibited. Although he had excellent Italian vocal soloists, notorious for their pronunciation in Handelâ??s English oratorios and who naturally preferred singing in Italian, Handel found a solution. It was evident to Handel that, in response to the ban on performances of his Italian operas during the fasting season of 1737, he should promptly create a new oratorio in the Italian language but following the three-part â??Englishâ? oratorio form that he had developed in â??Estherâ? HWV 50b in 1732. Unlike in Rome in 1707, he had access to a chorus in London in 1737, and the English oratorio, with its substantial choral sections, a preference for concert-like rather than dramatic composition, and frequent inclusion of organ concertos loosely related to the narrative, was already established.
The new volume of the HHA includes the original version of the 1737 premiere as well as all the surviving early and later versions (the latter being exceptional highlights) of individual musical pieces from â??Il trionfo del Tempo e della Verità â?.

The Missa Beatissimae Virginis Maria was composed ca. 1758-1760, between the end of his tenure as a singer in the choir of St. Stephen's in Vienna and the beginning of his first position as violinist and music director for the Bishop of Grosswardein. The scoring of SATB (for soli as well as choir) and church trio was augmented by two trumpets (clarini) and timpani, as well as two trombones. The latter instruments double the alto and tenor voices in tutti passages but in the Et incarnatus est they are also employed in an obbligato role. On the one hand, as an early work this Mass is in the style of the festive baroque tradition, as practiced in south-German regions until the middle of the eighteenth century; on the other hand it already shows the subjective inspiration which distinguished it from many of the mass settings by Haydn's contemporaries. Johannes Brahms's Alto Rhapsody is published here in a new Urtext edition, modernised for present-day performance practice. It is based on the 2nd impression of the first printed edition, as this is regarded as the authentic musical text following the last revisions made by the composer. The musical setting of Goethe's poem Harzreise im Winter opens with a somber beginning, then by turning to divine powers, it arrives at a hopeful new level. The work - which was composed in connection with the marriage of Julie, the daughter of Brahms's revered Clara Schumann, in 1869 - impresses above all with its personal touch as well as its pioneering progressive harmonies and enormous compositional power, which still entice listeners into the concert hall. $26.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Soli SSAATB, Coro SSA(A)T(T)B, Fl, 2 Ob, Fg, 2 Tr, 2 (3) Vl, Va, Vc, Bc SKU: CA.5527803 Composed by George Frideric Handel. Edited by Felix Loy. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Handel. Innovative practice aids, Sacred vocal music. Vocal score. HWV 278. Duration 24 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 55.278/03. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.5527803). ISBN 9790007188528. Language: English. Handel's Utrecht Te Deum HWV 278 enthralled London audiences right from its first performance, and it continues to do so today in concert halls and churches all over the world. It was performed for the first time in a festive service on 13 July 1713 in St. Paul's Cathedral to celebrate the Peace marking the end of the twelve year-long War of the Spanish Succession in 1713. The Te Deum was the first commission by the English royal house and was also Handel's first sacred work in the English language. For Handel the Utrecht Te Deum was an important milestone at the beginning of his London career. The composition brought him an annual pension from Queen Anne and helped him to establish himself as a composer of prestigious music for the English royal family. Four further settings of the Ambrosian hymn of praise by Handel followed, including the equally popular Dettingen Te Deum (Carus 55.238). The six soloists required can in practice be reduced to four, and the Te Deum does not contain any stand-alone arias. The chorus is scored in five parts in a few movements (SSATB), with the concluding doxology beginning in double-choir scoring (SST/AATB). For this frequently-performed work Carus offers a musical text reflecting the latest scholarly discoveries. The Critical Report contains information on all the important facts about the work in a practicable, compact form. A detailed foreword contains insights into the creation of the work and its reception. The vocal score, chorus score, and orchestral parts provide for the needs of practical performance; these are complemented by carus music, the choir app for practising the choral parts, as well as the Carus Choir Coach practice CDs and a Vocal Score XL in reader-friendly large print. $22.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Bach's Reformation cantata, based on what is probably Martin Luther's most famous hymn, evolved over a period of several years. At the beginning was a Weimar cantata for Oculi Sunday 1716, now missing, which was based on the hymn with an instrumental quotation in the opening aria and with the final chorale. In the Leipzig years around 1730, Bach wrote a cantata for Reformation Day using this material. It began with the first verses of Luther's hymn in a simple four-part setting and also included the other verses. Later on, in the 1730s or 1740s, Bach replaced the introductory chorale movement with a chorale setting which was unique, spacious and motet-like in its style; this - uniquely in this respect - incorporated the choral writing in an instrumental canon for oboes and organ continuo. The powerful opening chorus is followed by recitatives and arias which reflect the full breadth of Bach's art of word painting and emotion. One of Bach's most magnificent cantatas, one of the greatest works in the history of music. In addition to the complete performance material the arrangements of movements 1 and 5 (with 3 trumpets, timpani as playing score) by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach are available (Carus 3108089). SATB vocal soli, SATB choir, 2 Oboes, 2 Violins, Viola, Basso continuo SKU: C...(+)
SATB vocal soli, SATB choir, 2 Oboes, 2 Violins, Viola, Basso continuo SKU: CA.3912700 Psalm 121. Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann. Edited by Klaus Hofmann. This edition: urtext. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Telemann-Archiv. Ich Hebe Meine Augen Auf (Psalm 121). Sacred vocal music, Psalms, German, Psalms. Full score. TVWV 7:16. 36 pages. Duration 12 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 39.127/00. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3912700). ISBN 9790007164416. Language: German. Telemann's setting of Psalm 121 I lift up mine eyes to the hills reveals him to be an admirer of French music. Constructed on the example of a grand motet, each of the movements is patterned after the French model: the model of an overture for the first movement, the echoes of a chaconne in the second, the dotted gigue rhythms of the Canarie in the third. In addition there is the lively exchange between choir and solo ensemble, and much more. The music is full of poetic imagery, whenever the occasion arises, as at the very beginning with the words Ich hebe meine Augen auf, or in a later passage with the text Siehe, der Hüter Israel schläft noch schlummert nicht (Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep). $37.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

The cantata cycle Die Tageszeiten, which was composed in Hamburg in 1757, is one of the outstanding late works of Georg Philipp Telemann. A Symphonie and four cantatas (each of which consists of an aria, accompagnato, aria, and chorus) portray, in a richly sensitive manner, the course of a day, beginning with the awakening of nature to the sunset. The poetry of Friedrich Wilhelm Zachariae and Telemann's music herald the beauty of nature, as well as the greatness of God revealed within it. Orchestra SATB vocal soli, SATB choir, 2 recorders, 2 oboes, 3 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, 2 (3) violins, 2 violas, cello, basso continuo SKU: CA.5507549 Ode. Version of the first performance and version of 1751. Composed by George Frideric Handel. Edited by Felix Loy. This edition: urtext. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Handel. Organ. Innovative practice aids, Sacred vocal music, Oratorios. Single Part, Organ. Composed 1736/1751. HWV 75. 60 pages. Duration 85 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 55.075/49. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.5507549). ISBN 9790007171315. Text language: German/English. For the magnificent opening of the oratorio season at the beginning of 1736 Handel presented a composition which, like hardly any of his other oratorios, gave him the opportunity to display his musical artistry: John Dryden's ode Alexander's Feast or the Power of Music, published in 1696, demonstrates the power of music by the example of the ancient hero, Alexander the Great. From the impressive lament on the death of Darius, the King of Persia, to the boisterous Praise of Bacchus Handel avails himself of the entire breadth of the musical representation of the emotions and the possibilities for expression. In the text by Newburg Hamilton added at the end of work St. Cecilia elevates the events of the ancient heathen story, which Handel expressed in plastic, skillful polyphony. Later, this homage to the patron saint of church music, Handel also present the opportunity to perform the work on St. Cecilia's Day (22 November). For the first time the present new edition is based consistently on Handel's conducting score, which he used for his own performances of the oratorio, thus not only eliminating timeworn errors, but also offering clarity concerning the choruses, the arias and recitatives, actually performed in Handel's concerts, as well as their sequence of performance. The new Carus edition offers two performance versions: the version of the premiere in 1736, as well as a revised version from 1751. Furthermore, the inclusion of the Concerto for Harp HWV 294 (CV 55.294) is also possible; Handel composed this work especially for Alexander's Feast (as an illustration of Timotheus, the ancient poet who played the lyre). For this purpose the edition contains the appropriate alternatives for the sequence of the movements.
