Among Haydn's over thirty settings of the Latin Ordinary, the Missa in honorem Sanctae Ursula occupies an outstanding position, which, according to the autograph, was completed on 5 August 1793. This Mass has been referred to as the most Mozartian of all his masses. With its song-like melodic character, the unity of the motivic material and the harmonius balance between festive and reflective sections this Mass is one of Haydn's most successful and inspired works. This work, which in addition to the usual Salzburg church trio includes two trumpets and timpani, belongs to the category of Missa solemnis. The popular nickname Chiemsee-Messe is bound up with the history of the origins of the work. Haydn wrote the Mass for the musically gifted nun, Sebastiana Oswald, who belonged to the Benedictine cloister of Frauenchiemsee. This work soon found widespread acceptance beyond the originally intended sphere of its origins, as is indicated by the numerous copies found in Austrian convents. Bach's first cantata for the election of the Leipzig town council, composed in August 1723, is one of his most splendidly scored work from his Leipzig period. The choice of opening, with the representative form of a French overture, was suited to a festive orchestral scoring. Two choral movements frame a middle section which consists of two arias and a recitativo accompagnato with a trumpet ritornello. The conclusion of this extended festive music takes a reflective turn in movements 8 and 9, when Bach allows a recitative to be followed by simple, prayer-like chorale movement. Antonin Dvorak's impressive Stabat Mater for soloists, chorus and orchestra is probably the best-known of the composer's sacred works. Some painful experiences - in 1875 his first daughter died, and in 1877 he lost two other children in quick succession - may have led to Dvorak's preoccupation with the suffering of the Mother of God, who stands weeping beneath the cross of her son. The music enters into the different moods of the liturgical texts with great sensitivity. Nine movements in slow to moderate tempi serve as a kind of Passion meditation, before the ecstasy of a vision of the resurrection wins the upper hand at the end of the tenth movement. With our newly-published arrangement for chamber orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, timpani, and strings), smaller choirs now have the opportunity of performing this work without the choir being drowned out by a large-scale symphony orchestra. The symphonic character of the work is nevertheless preserved. This scoring offers an optimal balance between transparency and orchestral sound. All vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version. Vocal score and choral score can be used also together with the original version, which is in preparation.

Of the 19 Masses by Dittersdorf which have been handed down, the present Mass, which is being published for the first time, enjoyed a special popularity during the composer's lifetime and it was even performed for the coronation of emperor Franz II in the Frankfurt Cathedral. This solemn, prestigious Mass shows evidence of choral movements in traditional contrapuntal church style as well solo parts with a modern, cantabile character. In addition, the Gloria includes a lengthy virtuosic violin solo, which also lends the work a concertante character (Dittersdorf was a professional violinist). Uns ist ein Kind geboren is one of Telemann's most beautiful Christmas cantatas, which features an opening duet for two sopranos based on Polish-Moravian folklore, as well as two substantial choral movements. The two horns allotted to the second choral movement to the text Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe can be replaced by two flutes. This is supported by a source from the Telemann tradition in Frankfurt, in which these parts are present.

The oratorio Passions by Homilius were among the last compositions of their kind in the 18th century. In an oratorio Passion the chorus is restricted mainly to singing the chorales and the interjections of the crowd; only the conclusion of a Passion provides an opportunity for an extensive choral movement. In the St. John Passion the final chorus emphasizes the supreme importance of the Crucifixion as the climax of St. John's Gospel. The free elements of the composition take the forms customary at the time: da capo arias are predominant. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3710300.

In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor. The primary source on which the new Carus Urtext edition is based is the first edition of the score from 1800. Contrary to normal custom, Haydn published the score himself in order to avoid unauthorized publications and to present an optimally designed edition from an authentic hand. With this original document, which has been compared with additional relevant sources, Carus now offers a musical text based on the latest musicological findings. The critical report provides all of the important data concerning the edition in a compact form suitable for practical use [practical performance]. A detailed foreword offers insight into the genesis of the work, its construction and reception and illuminates compositional and theological and spiritual-historical aspects. In addition to the score, with singing texts in two languages (G. van Swieten's original German and English text), in the interest of legibility, vocal and choral scores will be offered in two separate editions (German or English). This work is now available in carus music, the choir app. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5199000.

An unusual feature of this Mass is its cyclic form, a compositional principle which Mozart first introduced in his masses in this Mass in C: in the Agnus Dei (Dona nobis pacem) he reverted to the music of the Kyrie, thus giving the Mass overall musical unity. Another unusual feature of this work is its popular character. This is evident both in its catchy themes and in its relatively straigthforward musical structure. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4062600.

The cantata cycle Die Tageszeiten, which was composed in Hamburg in 1757, is one of the outstanding late works of Georg Philipp Telemann. A Symphonie and four cantatas (each of which consists of an aria, accompagnato, aria, and chorus) portray, in a richly sensitive manner, the course of a day, beginning with the awakening of nature to the sunset. The poetry of Friedrich Wilhelm Zachariae and Telemann's music herald the beauty of nature, as well as the greatness of God revealed within it. Colorful instrumentation and pictures in sound corresponding to each time of the day, delicate compositional structure, and an ingenious realization of the text characterize this work, whose musical idiom is at times reminiscent of Haydn. Johann Michael Haydn's Requiem in C minor heavily influenced W. A. Mozart's Requiem. In just two weeks Michael Haydn composed his work in December 1771, on the occasion of the death of his employer, Prince Bishop Sigismund Count Schrattenbach, who was beloved among the people and was a great patron of the arts. The work was written under the impression of personal tragedy: Haydn's only child, Aloisia Josepha, died in January 1771, before completing her first year of life. Parts of the Schrattenbach-Requiem were played together with the completed movements from his second, unfinished Requiem during his own furneral service. During the funeral service in Vienna for Joseph Haydn, parts of his younger brother's C-minor Requiem were also performed. Score available separately - see item CA.5032100.

In spring 1816 Franz Schubert, just nineteen years old, completed his second setting of the Stabat Mater in the midst of a highly productive period. In contrast with his first setting written the previous year, just five minutes in length, this time Schubert used the German translation by Klopstock as the basis for his composition. Stefan Schuck's edition is the first one of this work to be based on a critical evaluation of the primary sources, with complete performance material. The work, in a dark F minor, with its text by Klopstock, places Jesus Christ, rather than Mary, at the center of the contemplation. With his fugues, but particularly in the eight-part lamenting chorus Wer wird Zahren sanften Mitleids, Schubert shows himself at the height of his creative output. He composed his 4th Symphony, the Tragic, at almost the same time. The Stabat Mater is a rewarding work for choral societies and choirs to perform, because the choir has the largest portion to sing, and the choral parts are not too demanding. The composition is also a beautiful introduction to the choral-symphonic music of Schubert for less experienced choirs. Score and part available separately - see item CA.7006500.

Composed in 1727 for a eulogy and funeral oration for Electress Christiane Eberhardine in the Leipzig University church, the music for the funeral ode is well-known today above all through reconstructions of Bach's St Mark Passion, in which large parts of this cantata were probably re-used, but of which only the text survives. With the funeral ode we have one of Bach's strongest and most fascinating vocal compositions. Although Gottsched's text is associated with a particular occasion, it is distinguished in its literary quality from many secular cantatas and it is entirely appropriate to perform this impressive cantata in concerts. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3119800.
