The cantata Sie werden euch in den Bann tun [They will banish you] BWV 183 for Exaudi Sunday is one of the cantatas composed on texts by the Leipzig poetess Christiane Mariane von Ziegler with which Bach concluded his second annual cycle of cantatas after he had abandoned the annual cycle of chorale cantatas at Easter 1725. The cantata opens with Jesus's words from the Sunday gospel reading in an accompagnato recitative for bass - representing the vox Christi - accompanied by four oboes which, together with the strings, are also deployed in the cantata's second accompagnato recitative. The first of the virtuoso arias is accompanied by violoncello piccolo, the second by two oboes da caccia together with the string ensemble. The cantata concludes with an unusually animated final chorale. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3118300.

With a total duration of about 30 minutes, Schubert's Mass in B flat major (D 324), written in 1815, is considerably longer than Mozart's and Haydn's classical Brevis masses, and its large instrumental ensemble with strings, woodwinds, brass and timpani even gives it a clearly solemn character. Overall, Schubert was inspired by the late Haydn style of the symphonic mass (e.g., the division into six large movements, the omission of arias for the vocal soloists who are instead juxtaposed with the choir, singing short passages either singly or as a group) without, of course, achieving its temporal expansion. This is a representative, musically appealing work that excels with its multi-layered, detailed text treatment. It is, therefore, suitable for special occasions and the high feasts of the church year and can be mastered well by experienced church choirs. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4065700.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Christmas mass, the Messe de Minuit, is throughly in the French tradition, celebrating the joyful news of the Birth of Christ with cheerful happiness. In this midnight mass, composed in 1694, ten traditional French Christmas hymns have been rearranged, lending the work a dance-like energy alongside charming tone coloring. In independent movements the relatively small instrumental ensemble consisting of two flutes, strings and organ plays a significant role in the musical events of this mass, alternating with various combinations of the vocal parts. Solo voices are only used together in small ensembles and, in accordance with the practices of the period, the boundaries between solo ensemble and choir are fluid, meaning that these solo passages can also be sung by members of the choir. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2102900.

This nine-movement psalm composition allows all the participants to shine, in some cases with rich virtuosity: the string ensemble in the opening Sonata; the solo singers and choir in the chaconne-like first vocal movement, Singet dem Herrn; also the solo singers in two duets (alto + tenor, soprano + alto), an alto solo and an extensive bass solo; the choir in two further movements - a fugue on the 6th verse of the psalm Es stehet herrlich und prachtig fur ihm and the concluding movement in two sections, Betet an den Herrn, which ends with a brilliant fugue on Es furchte ihn alle Welt. This is a festive sacred work suitable for many occasions (including weekday Epiphany psalm services and for services on the 4th Sunday after Easter). The present edition presents the source material in revides form, transcribed into current editorial and performance usage. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3912400.

The cantata Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ begins with an expansive chorale arrangement, for which Bach reverted to a proven model: The four voices of the solo ensemble take over the chorale, in which the melody lies in the soprano. For stanzas 2-4 Bach chooses the aria form with a highly differentiated scoring from movement to movement, ranging from a continuo Aria (1st movement), up to an aria accompanied by the violin, with obbligato bassoon and continuo. A straightforward four-part chorale movement concludes the cantata. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3117700.

Franz Xaver Richter probably wrote his Missa in A, with the nickname Hyemalis (winter), between 1781 and 1783, during his tenure as Kapellmeister at the Strasbourg Cathedral. This peculiar epithet leads us to presume that the Mass was meant to be performed during a sacred service in a time period between Epiphany and the Sunday before Ash Wednesday (Quinquagesima). The present work, a first edition, is a Messe sollenne senza Trombe, in which Richter achieved a festive character with musical variety by means of a comparably modest ensemble. Brixi came from a widespread family of Bohemian musicians which included composers whose works were well known among rural communities. The present edition of this short mass (known as the Missa aulica), which is published here for the first time, is a typical example of this type of music: scored for a small ensemble, which makes only modest demands of the soloists - melodious, popular, playful. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2705200.

The Gloria, composed in early 1822 at the age of 13, is Mendelssohn's first creative venture in the field of church music on a larger scale. It is a direct result of his composition studies under the director of the Berlin Singakademie Carl Friedrich Zelter, but was no longer wholly a student work because the young composer hoped that Zelter would provide him with an opportunity to perform this work with the Singakademie. The enthusiasm for Handel and Bach which was sustained by the performances at the Singakademie influenced Mendelssohn's early creative style. In the Gloria Mendelssohn sought to emulate the model of the large-scale baroque cantata. The concluding fugue, the mysterious Qui tollis and lyrical solos ensembles in the place of solo arias give testimony to Mendelssohn's great talent and willingness to experiment.
