The St. John Passion, Bach's first passion oratorio, can hardly be understood asonework. Between 1724 and 1750 the work was performed at least four times in various Leipzig churches under the composer's direction and for every one of these occasions it was revised - sometimes quite substantially. This edition presents the St. John Passion in its second version of 1725, of which only excerpts were rendered in the New Bach Edition volume II/4 (1973). This version as well as the last one of 1749 constitute the two versions that have come down to us almost in their entirety. Most recently found sources - in particular the libretto print of the passion rediscovered in 2015 - are taken into consideration in this edition for the first time.

The cantata Hochsterwunschtes Freudenfest BWV 194 was composed for an organ dedication on 2 November 1723 in Stormthal, Saxony. A year later, and with just a few alterations, the cantata was performed again in Leipzig on Trinity Sunday. Our edition takes this Leipzig version of 1724 as its source. The special occasion of its composition is reflected in the extent of the composition which has twelve, instead of the usual six, movements. The orchestral scoring is for strings and three obbligato oboes. A special feature of the cantata is its structure as an orchestral suite. The beginning is a spirited opening chorus in the style of a French overture. The bass aria in the third movement has the character of a pastorale, and the following aria (movement 5) in turn has the character of a gavotte, etc. A simple four-part chorale concludes this multifaceted composition, marked by some extremely heartfelt moments. Score available separately - see item CA.3119400.

WithL'Etoile, Chabrier composed a light-hearted opera which has increasingly enjoyed revivals in recent years. The plot is introduced by King Ouf I who offers his subjects an execution every year on his birthday. Unfortunately the problem now arises that no crime has recently been committed which might serve as a reason for an execution. Finally, he finds a would-be victim in the young Lazuli. However, according to predictions by the astrologer Siroco, Lazuli's fate is closely linked to the king's own life. The comic opera is further bolstered by a story of mistaken identities which involves a great deal of diplomacy, a love story and a large number of refined, yet catchy melodies.Chabrier was a master of the sensitive and complicated art of musical comedy, a field where he can be compared in equal measure to Offenbach, Rossini and Mozart. This vocal score is based on the full score edited by Hugh Macdonald which is published as part of the seriesL'Opera francais. - Authoritative Urtext edition based on the seriesL'Opera francais- Original French text with a German singing translation- Comprehensive foreword (Ger/Eng/Fr)

In 1828 Berlioz wrote the Huit scènes de Faust. The work was soon withdrawn but almost twenty years later each of the eight scenes found a place in the Lgende dramatique La damnation de Faust dedicated to Franz Liszt. The first part of the Damnation exposes the figure of Faust and has an introductory nature. From the second part onwards, the course of action is largely based on Goethe’s drama.Contrasting characters and dramatic effect are of central importance in understanding Berlioz’s musical thought and his compositional process. Magic and fairy tale, incantations and ghosts, have been the ever-recurring themes of opera since the Baroque. It is precisely this fantasy in Berlioz's Faust, the “Opra de Concert en Quatre actsâ€, which comes very close to the spirit of Goethe's presentation.

Barenreiter's publication of a new volume of theWorks of Gioachino Rossini, in collaboration with the Center for Italian Opera Studies at the University of Chicago, makes available an edition of the operaIl barbiere di Sivigliawhich meets modern demands. The editors have recently identified numerous carelessly edited places in the last critical edition by referring to additional sources. The greatest changes relate to the overture; for the new edition, no fewer than twenty different autograph manuscripts have been consulted. A detailed appendix containing alternative vocal parts, advice on ornamentation and compositions by Rossini significant in the performance history of the opera complete the volume. A 420-page Critical Commentary is published separately. With this, a critical edition is now available to interpreters, enabling them to perform Rossini's ,,Barber of Sevillewith the greatest possible confidence in the accuracy of the musical material. The performance material is available on hire, and a vocal score will be published at the end of 2009. Through 1829 Rossini was an extraordinarily prolific composer of operas, comic, serious, and semiserious, in Italian and French, as well as of a great deal of vocal and instrumental music. He composed sacred music, vocal treatises, cantatas. Then, for many different reasons, he wrote very little music for more than twentyfive years, if we except some songs and the ' Stabat Mater' . Only after he left Italy definitively for Paris in 1855 did he find his voice again. Between 1857 and 1868 a fresh group of masterpieces issued from his pen, the so-called ' Peches de vieillesse' (Sins of Old Age), including chamber music, songs, and the 'Petite Messe Solennelle'. Philip Gossett, General Editor of Works of Gioachino Rossini, is the Robert W. Reneker Distinguished Service Professor at The University of Chicago and a professordi chiara famaat the University of RomeLa Sapienza. He is also general editor of The Works of Giuseppe Verdi. Barenreiter in cooperation with the Center for Italian Opera Studies at The University of Chicago will publish ten volumes in the series Works of Gioachino Rossini, in critical editions, during the period 2007-2011. These are all volumes that were not issued in theEdizione critica delle opere di Gioachino Rossini.

The cantata Ich freue mich in dir was first performed during Bach's second year as Thomaskantor, on the 3rd day of Christmas, and belongs to the so-called annual cycle of chorale cantatas. Here the focus of the composition is the hymn of the same name by Philipp Ziegler, in which the first and final strophes were adopted, word for word, in the first and sixth movements of the cantata. The soprano, which carries the chorale, is supported by the conrnett (Zink), which already at this time had become a seldom-used instrument. The joyful, lively choral movement with instrumental interludes directly follows the first aria, and begins with a marked, ascending motive at the word Getrost! (safely). The oboes d'amore which accompany the alto lend the movement a special color. In the second aria (for soprano), Bach again shows himself to be the master of text interpretation. The words Wie lieblich klingt es in den Ohren are emphasized in an exchange between open strings and sixteenth note figures. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3113300.

In keeping with the victorious mood, Handel often splits the chorus into five voices (with divided sopranos) for passages of pure homophony. When the choir declaim as one, the effect is of joyful celebration. To start each phrase on the right note, it is essential to be familiar with the orchestral interludes. The cantabile movements, such as No. 3, can be particularly tricky to perform: The vocal leaps in these demanding choral-soprano sections become much easier if you can hear the underlying harmonies while practicing. The same is true for No. 5.The Carus Choir Coach offers choir singers the unique opportunity to study and learn their own, individual choral parts within the context of the sound of the entire choir and orchestra. For every vocal range a download containing each choir part is available. The Carus Choir Coach is based on recorded interpretations by renowned artists who have performed the work from carefully prepared Carus Urtext editions. Each choir part is presented in three different versions:Original recordingCoach: each part is accompanied by the piano, with the original recording sounding in the backgroundCoach in slow mode: the tempo of the coach slows down to 70% of the original version â through this reduction passages can be learned more effectively.Performers: Dorothee Mields (soprano), Ulrike Andersen (alto), Mark Wilde (tenore), Chris Dixon (basso) â Alsfelder Vokalensemble, Concerto Polacco â Wolfgang Helbich. After Missa Latina and Magnificat, Te Deum is now the third major composition by musician and composer Karl Albrecht âBobbiâ Fischer published by Carus. Fischerâs musical roots lie in classical music, which he combines with jazz elements and Latin American rhythms. All three styles appear in the Te Deum. In keeping with the proclamation âTe Deum laudamusâ (We praise thee, O God), the work begins with the festive (Cuban) energy, propelled by timpani and trumpet; the choir can also be heard imitating fanfares. Later, a cappella choruses become a recurring element, in which phrases set as Gregorian chant are presented against an ever-changing chordal background. But the score also features elements of swing and rhythm and blues, frenetic choral outbursts of joy, as well as moments of mystic contemplation. Moreover, the instrumentalists are given ample opportunity for improvised solos. Interwoven into the otherwise Latin text is the well-known German chorale GroÃer Gott, wir loben dich. Here several verses can be sung with the congregation; alongside the original German text, the score features the English translation âHoly God, we praise thy nameâ.- An exciting combination of classical choral music with elements of jazz and Latin American music- The congregation can take part in the performance (chorale)- Singers can choose between Latin/German or Latin/English- Varied mix of styles- An enrichment of our crossover program

The Italian oratorio La Resurrezione (The Resurrection) was written during Handel’s time in Rome. It was performed on Easter Sunday 1708 with great splendour and extravagance by a large orchestra conducted by Arcangelo Corelli in the Palazzo Bonelli, the Roman palazzo of Handel’s patron the Marchese Francesco Maria Ruspoli. In its dramatic structure and characterisation of the protagonists, the work displays a striking affinity with Italian opera. Lucifer’s raging sixty fourth notes call to mind the demon characters in Venetian opera and Maddalena’s arias are so full of expressive power and virtuosity that Handel later incorporated one of them into his opera Agrippina. The unusual musical richness of this work and the virtuosic and masterly shaping of the arias make it a welcome addition to any concert programme.
