In 1828 Berlioz wrote the Huit scènes de Faust. The work was soon withdrawn but almost twenty years later each of the eight scenes found a place in the Lgende dramatique La damnation de Faust dedicated to Franz Liszt. The first part of the Damnation exposes the figure of Faust and has an introductory nature. From the second part onwards, the course of action is largely based on Goethe’s drama.Contrasting characters and dramatic effect are of central importance in understanding Berlioz’s musical thought and his compositional process. Magic and fairy tale, incantations and ghosts, have been the ever-recurring themes of opera since the Baroque. It is precisely this fantasy in Berlioz's Faust, the “Opra de Concert en Quatre actsâ€, which comes very close to the spirit of Goethe's presentation.

The cantata for the 20th Sunday after Trinity. Ah! I see now, as I to the wedding bidden, BWV 162 was first performed on 25 October 1716 in the Castle church at Weimar. During the first year in his position as Thomaskantor, Bach made a revival performance of the cantata on 10 October 1723. For this Leipzig version he added an additional obbligato voice in the first movement and in the final chorale he added a Corno da tirarsi, which played colla-parte with the soprano. However, we do not know what this mysterious instrument looked like. For performances today we recommend using a trumpet or a slide trumpet. The cantata begins not with an introductory chorus, but rather with a sonorous bass aria with a string accompaniment and obbligato trumpet. The following movements, movement 2 through 5, are also performed by vocal soloists. The third movement, a soprano aria, presents a peculiarity: the obbligato wind parts were not contained in the original version of this cantata. Our edition offers a reconstruction for the flute, made by the famous Bach interpreter and expert, Masaaki Suzuki. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3116200.

The first edition of a Missa in F by Giovanni Platti (ca. 1690-1763) is a rarity. Platti served at the Court of the Counts of Schonborn-Wiesentheid, and during his more than 40 years of service at the Court he worked for more than five masters and each of them knew how to make use of his musical abilities. Thus, in addition to his position as a virtuoso oboist, singer and violinist, he was also entrusted with the musical education of musicians. The Missa in F major is primarily a composition for choir; it is very singable, its construction is transparent and it is accompanied by only four strings and an organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4067700.

Handel composed Samson directly after completing the Messiah. After its premiere in 1743 in the Covent Garden Theatre in London, the work rapidly became one of the composerâ??s most successful oratorios alongside Esther and Judas Maccabaeus. This probably had as much to do with the popular Old Testament story of the libretto as with Handelâ??s masterly shaping of the arias and choruses.By including some movements in the appendix, this edition makes it possible for the first time to perform the work in its original 1741 version. The edition is based on the complete edition volume of the Halle Handel Edition (BA 4099), offering the complete music text of the oratorio for the first time.

Uns ist ein Kind geboren is one of Telemann's most beautiful Christmas cantatas, which features an opening duet for two sopranos based on Polish-Moravian folklore, as well as two substantial choral movements. The two horns allotted to the second choral movement to the text Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe can be replaced by two flutes. This is supported by a source from the Telemann tradition in Frankfurt, in which these parts are present. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3911500.

An impressive festive cantata with a solo trumpet part and three powerful choruses; a work in which Telemann proves himself a brilliant and imaginative architect of musical grand form. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3910700.

The technical demands made on the vocal soloists (and also on the instrumentalists) are no greater in the soli than in the tutti sections. Therefore there ist no need for highly accomplished solo singers; members of the choir can take the solo parts. This Mass can also be performed accompanied only by an organ.

Although Warum betrubst du dich, mein Herz (What is it troubles thee, my heart) BWV 138 is based on the chorale of the same name, it is nevertheless not regarded as one of Bach's chorale cantatas. In this unusual composition from Bach's first cycle of cantatas, further chorale verses were not paraphrased in the freely-composed sections (as in the chorale cantatas). Instead the chorale occurs in dialog with the recitatives. It assumes the role of the comforter, whilst doubts are expressed through the recitatives. This leads to recitative and chorale being merged into larger movements. In the only aria in the cantata, trust in God finally prevails. The cantata ends with a final chorale verse; in the interludes between the lines, Bach ignites a roaring virtuoso firework display. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3113800.

The cantata Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ begins with an expansive chorale arrangement, for which Bach reverted to a proven model: The four voices of the solo ensemble take over the chorale, in which the melody lies in the soprano. For stanzas 2-4 Bach chooses the aria form with a highly differentiated scoring from movement to movement, ranging from a continuo Aria (1st movement), up to an aria accompanied by the violin, with obbligato bassoon and continuo. A straightforward four-part chorale movement concludes the cantata. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3117700.

This Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the first and most straightforward of four litanies which Mozart composed from 1771 to 1776 in Salzburg. Its light instrumental scoring - only the church trio of two violins and continuo, with trombones used merely to reinforce the choir - suggest that this piece was intended for Marian devotions in the small Court Chapel of Schloss Mirabell. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4005400.

Instead of an opening chorus Cantata BWV 42 begins with a magnificent Sinfonia in the style of the Brandenburg Concertos. It is possible that Bach took this movement from a concerto which he had composed earlier. The first aria, for alto with obbligato oboe and bassoon, could be derived from the middle movement of this concerto. The heroic bass aria, a statement of the certainty of faith, forms a weighty counterpart to the opening movement. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3104200.

An unknown work from the so-called Buckeburger Bach, which at first was ascribed unjustly to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The story of the Suffering of the Lord is examined from a different perspective. Pilgrims have undertaken a journey to the Holy Land and when they arrive they are informed by a hermit of the suffering and death of Christ. An additional figure, an angel, lends this representation of the Passion a heightened form for communicating the importance of the suffering of Christ.. This cantata, too, has the Passion as its theme. While the choruses are of only moderate difficulty, the solo parts demand singers with coloratura ability. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3912800.
