Pietro Metastasio's libretto to azione sacra La Passione di Gesu Cristo (1730) is a prototype for the Italian Catholic oratorio of the 18th century, in which the Biblical text is entirely transformed into free verse. Originally written for Antonio Caldara, the text has been set to music many times. However, the famous poet wrote in a letter to the 26-year-old composer that the setting, in the style of Italian Opera seria, was the most expressive music that has ever been written for this poem. German and English translations of the libretto are provided in this edition.

From Bach's music library; formerly attributed to Bach. The present edition is based on the score partly made by Bach himself, held by the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek Berlin. The chorales, originally noted only for voices and Basso continuo, have been instrumentated according to contemporary practice of that time. The Carus program featuring music of the Court of Dresden has been expanded with the publication of the first edition of the great masses of Johann David Heinichen, who, next to Hasse and Zelenka, was the most important musical representative of this capital of Saxony. A peculiarity of this work is the fact that Heinichen inserted an actual concerto movement for solo flute, 2 oboes, strings and continuo between the Gloria and Credo, which recommends the Mass for concert performances. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2704800.

Several elements contribute to the Christmas character of this mass, which is distinguished by the fine skillfulness of its composition: structural means, such as motives in triads, the symbol of gently rocking, traditional themes and a fitting instrumentation with trumpets and flutes. Because of its catchy, easiliy graspable quality this Messa Pastorale, published here in a first edition, is highly suited for liturgical use. As in all cantatas for St. Michael the chorale cantata Lord God, we praise thee all of us BWV 130 from 1724 is a magnificent composition. Not only in the opening chorus and the final chorale do the three trumpets and timpani play a role, but the first aria In hell the serpent, hot with hate is even accompanied solely by trumpets, timpani and continuo. The second aria, Thou, of cherubim the master, brings an unexpected contrast in which, besides the tenor and continuo, on a solo flute is heard. The original set of parts were separated from each other in the 19th century and today are scattered throughout the world. For the first time, some of the parts were taken into consideration in preparing this edition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3113000.

The cantata for the 20th Sunday after Trinity. Ah! I see now, as I to the wedding bidden, BWV 162 was first performed on 25 October 1716 in the Castle church at Weimar. During the first year in his position as Thomaskantor, Bach made a revival performance of the cantata on 10 October 1723. For this Leipzig version he added an additional obbligato voice in the first movement and in the final chorale he added a Corno da tirarsi, which played colla-parte with the soprano. However, we do not know what this mysterious instrument looked like. For performances today we recommend using a trumpet or a slide trumpet. The cantata begins not with an introductory chorus, but rather with a sonorous bass aria with a string accompaniment and obbligato trumpet. The following movements, movement 2 through 5, are also performed by vocal soloists. The third movement, a soprano aria, presents a peculiarity: the obbligato wind parts were not contained in the original version of this cantata. Our edition offers a reconstruction for the flute, made by the famous Bach interpreter and expert, Masaaki Suzuki. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3116200.

He was without argument our greatest church composer, wrote the lexicographer E. L. Gerber a few years after Homilius's death in 1785. As a result of the destruction of the Kreuzkirche during the Seven Years War, the longtime Kreuzkantor, a pupil of Bach, performed his professional musical duties primarily at the Frauenkirche in Dresden. The Passionskantate was well received and widely disseminated during the 18th and 19th centuries: Thanks to its popularity it was published in 1775 by Breitkopf as a full score - a rare honor, accorded to only one other Passion in the 18th century (Graun's Tod Jesu). The text describes the events of the Passion from a very personal point of view: The story focuses less on the actual events, then upon the feelings of the observers of these events. The subjective nature of the narrative is reflected in a very dramatically marked style of recitative, which presents a charming contrast to the expressive choral writing and the melodically accented arias. With the release of a new music editions and a SACD/CD the Passionskantate can now be rediscovered.. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3710400.

The cantata cycle Die Tageszeiten, which was composed in Hamburg in 1757, is one of the outstanding late works of Georg Philipp Telemann. A Symphonie and four cantatas (each of which consists of an aria, accompagnato, aria, and chorus) portray, in a richly sensitive manner, the course of a day, beginning with the awakening of nature to the sunset. The poetry of Friedrich Wilhelm Zachariae and Telemann's music herald the beauty of nature, as well as the greatness of God revealed within it. Colorful instrumentation and pictures in sound corresponding to each time of the day, delicate compositional structure, and an ingenious realization of the text characterize this work, whose musical idiom is at times reminiscent of Haydn. C. P. E. Bach's nine-movement Magnificat (1749), the first great vocal work from his Berlin years, is among the most magnificent sounding, in which the solo vocal parts are also among the most ambitious settings of the Hymn to the Virgin Mary (Luke 1). The work fulfills all the criteria required for a larger sacred composition: grandeur, dignity, polyphonic and concertante choral movements, sensitive (empfindsam) and expressive arias, a long concluding double fugue. This richly scored Magnificat (with 3 trumpets and timp. ad. lib.), which is almost one hour in duration, would be well suited, for example, as the central work on every Christmas or pre-Christmas concert programme. After Johann Adolf Hasse had ended his career as a composer for the opera stage and finally settled down in Venice, he wrote a number of sacred works. Since he had long been obligated to the Saxon Court, where he served as a composer for three decades until 1763, these works were originally intended for the Catholic Court Church in Dresden. The solemn-pathetic Missa in G minor (1783), with the inserted movement Ad te levavi, is Hasse's final work: a crowning conclusion to an oeuvre whose significance in music history has only recently begun to be recognized and has now received the fitting acknowledgement it deserves. While the solos in earlier masses form an integral part of the structure of the entire work, Christian Bach made the solo sections independent in the sense of the Neopolitan school. The orchestra is occupied with longer preludes and rustling figures. In the eleven movements, Bach was able to unite the compositional techniques and expressivity of the Baroque with the beautiful sound of an Italian cantilena. From the forward by Traugott Fedtke. The oratorio Passions by Homilius were among the last compositions of their kind in the 18th century. In an oratorio Passion the chorus is restricted mainly to singing the chorales and the interjections of the crowd; only the conclusion of a Passion provides an opportunity for an extensive choral movement. In the St. John Passion the final chorus emphasizes the supreme importance of the Crucifixion as the climax of St. John's Gospel. The free elements of the composition take the forms customary at the time: da capo arias are predominant. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3710300.

Bach created the cantata Erhohtes Fleisch und Blut by setting the sacred words to what had originally been the music of a secular cantata, presumably for the festival of Pentecost in 1727. Bach made few alterations to the musical structure, but he enlarged the original solo scoring for soprano and bass to a four-voice ensemble. Particularly notable among the solo movements is the extensive duet for soprano and bass in the form of a minuet, which in its musical language is certainly unique in Bach's cantatas. The dancelike final chorus brings the four voices together, and gives highly effective expression to the joy of Pentecost. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3117300.
