Innovative practice aids, Sacred vocal music, Oratorios. Study score. Op. 85. Duration 54 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 23.020/07. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.2302007). ISBN M-007-24884-0. German/English. Text: Franz Xaver Huber. In his Passion oratorio Christus am Olberge [The Mount of Olives], Beethoven succeeded firstly in building on the 18th century tradition, and secondly in putting his own personal stamp on the nascent genre of German-language oratorio - the Vienna performances of Haydn's Die Schopfung and Die Jahreszeiten had only taken place a few years earlier. In composing the work he looked towards contemporary opera, using a text by an opera librettist to depict in music the dramatic situation of the doubting Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and his arrest. Yet we do not do justice to Beethoven's work if we simply regard it as a successor work to Graun's Der Tod Jesu or even Bach's St Matthew Passion. Beethoven's Christus am Olberge is characterized less by religious devotion and much more by the dramatic realization of a specific situation in the Passion story in deeply-felt musical scenes. With its magnificent, almost operatic music, this is a different Passion oratorio which is definitely worth hearing and experiencing - and in this form it is without doubt unique in the history of vocal-instrumental sacred music. The edition follows the first printed edition in music and text; differences in the text in the libretto originally set by Beethoven are given as a second text, and a singable English translation is underlaid. With this arrangement it is possible to present the work in a performance space of limited size. Haydn's original orchestration is filled with vivid tone painting and this reduced version represents Haydn's score using accurate colors for the obligato melodies and appropriate instrumental voices for the colla parte passages. It follows the format and content of the critical edition by Carus (ed. W. Gersthofer) and may be used together with the other materials from Carus 51.990 (choral and vocal scores, string parts). Modern performances of Creation use sometimes 50-60 players. It is hoped that the present reduction will make this beautiful work available to smaller groups, smaller performance venues, and groups with smaller budgets. Haydn's so-called Great Organ Solo Mass in E flat major is among those works by Joseph Haydn which early in its history enjoyed widespread dissemination. The E flat major Mass, with an unusual scoring including two English horns in the orchestra, was composed around 1770 during the first years of Haydn's tenure as Music Director for the Court of Esterhazy. Despite the readily playable, effective part for organ, employed prominently as a solo instrument in the piece, the Missa in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae, which was composed for a Feast to the Blessed Virgin Mary, is seldom performed today. In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor. SATB vocal soli, SATB choir, 3 oboes, bassoon, 3 trumpets, timpani, 2 violins, viola, basso continuo SKU: CA.3114913 Cantata for St. Michael. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Edited by Ingrid Jach. Arranged by Paul Horn. This edition: urtext. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Bach vocal. German title: Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Special days. Single Part, Viola. BWV 149. 4 pages. Duration 22 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.149/13. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3114913). ISBN 9790007208585. Key: D major. Language: German/English. Text: Henrici (Picander), Christian Friedrich. Text: Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander). Score and part available separately - see item CA.3114900. $4.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Since the days of Renaissance composers - beyond accusations of plagiarism - the admiration for a fellow composer has taken the form of quotations from his works or even new versions of his works. No less a work from the classical period than Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Creation (first performed in 1798), was the basis for the Schopfungsmesse (Creation Mass) by the Salzburg Court and Cathedral Music Director, Luigi Gatti. Gatti heard the oratorio in Salzburg performances conducted by Johann Michael Haydn in 1800. With great skill and sensitivity Gatti was able to underlay the choruses and arias of The Creation with the text of the Mass (at times he reduced and adapted the instrumentation), without doing harm to the admired original. Solo A, Coro TTBB, 2 Fl, 2 Ob, 2 Clt, 2 Fg, 2 Cor, 2 Vl, Va, Vc, Cb SKU: CA.1039700 (Alto Rhapsody). Composed by Johannes Brahms. Edited by Rainer Boss. Secular choral music. Full score. Op. 53. 32 pages. Duration 14 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 10.397/00. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.1039700). ISBN 9790007187590. Language: German. Johannes Brahms's Alto Rhapsody is published here in a new Urtext edition, modernised for present-day performance practice. It is based on the 2nd impression of the first printed edition, as this is regarded as the authentic musical text following the last revisions made by the composer. The musical setting of Goethe's poem Harzreise im Winter opens with a somber beginning, then by turning to divine powers, it arrives at a hopeful new level. The work - which was composed in connection with the marriage of Julie, the daughter of Brahms's revered Clara Schumann, in 1869 - impresses above all with its personal touch as well as its pioneering progressive harmonies and enormous compositional power, which still entice listeners into the concert hall. $26.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
