Edited by Hans Ryschawy. French Sacred Music. Viola 2. Sacred vocal music, Masses, Latin, Christmas. Single Part, Viola 2. H 9. 12 pages. Duration 25 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 21.029/13. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.2102913). ISBN 9790007198213. Text language: Latin. Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Christmas mass, the Messe de Minuit, is throughly in the French tradition, celebrating the joyful news of the Birth of Christ with cheerful happiness. In this midnight mass, composed in 1694, ten traditional French Christmas hymns have been rearranged, lending the work a dance-like energy alongside charming tone coloring. In independent movements the relatively small instrumental ensemble consisting of two flutes, strings and organ plays a significant role in the musical events of this mass, alternating with various combinations of the vocal parts. Solo voices are only used together in small ensembles and, in accordance with the practices of the period, the boundaries between solo ensemble and choir are fluid, meaning that these solo passages can also be sung by members of the choir. Soli SS(A)TTB, Coro S(A)TTB, Org - Level 3 SKU: CA.2102945 Arrangement for soloists, choir and organ (arr. A. Grasle). Composed by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Arranged by Andreas Grasle. Gattungen vokal: Sacred vocal music. Full Score. Composed ca. 1694. H 9. Duration 25 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.2102945). ISBN 9790007262013. Latin. Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Christmas mass, the Messe de Minuit, stands fully in the French tradition of celebrating the happy message of Christ's birth with exuberant cheerfulness. Composed around 1694, this midnight mass incorporates ten old French Christmas carols, giving it both a dance-like swing and special tonal colors. For this edition Andreas Grasle has transcribed the orchestral writing for organ. His distribution of the parts between manuals and pedals allows the distinctive tonal and dynamic gradations of the work to be transferred to the organ in an ideal way. So this version with reduced scoring offers a delightful alternative to the original version. The vocal parts (for soloists and choir) are identical with the edition of the original version, so that the vocal score and chorus score of that version can be used.

The Missa pastoralis bohemica (Bohemian Shepherds' Mass), composed in 1796 by Mozart's contemporary Jakub Jan Ryba, is the most significant of the so-called Czech Christmas Masses. These are masses in a folkloristic style, in which the individual movements consist of a series of vocal-instrumental scenes in the Czech language; their topic is the birth of Christ and they are performed during the Christmas service. The story is about four Czech shepherds to whom the birth of Christ is announced, whereupon they visit the child in the manger. Ryba's mass became so famous that it is regarded - even today - as a symbol of Czech Christmas. Orchestra SATB vocal soli, SATB choir, 2 oboes, [horn], 2 violins, viola, basso continuo - Grade 3 SKU: CA.3106209 Cantata for the 1st Sunday in Advent. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Edited by Reinhold Kubik. Arranged by Paul Horn. 1x 31.062/21 oboe 1, 1x 31.062/22 oboe 2, 1x 31.062/31 horn 1, 1x 31.062/32 horn 2. Coppenrath series, Hymns by Martin Luther: Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland. German title: Nun Komm Der Heiden Heiland Ii. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Advent, Christmas. Set of Orchestra Parts. Composed 1724. BWV 62. 12 pages. Duration 23 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.062/09. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3106209). ISBN 9790007043605. Key: B minor. Language: German/English. Text: Luther, Martin. Text: Martin Luther. Bach's second cantata starting with the text Come now, God's chosen saviour (II) BWV 62 was first performed in 1724 on the 1st Advent Sunday (which, at that time, was the only Advent Sunday with church music in Leipzig) and belongs to the annual cycle of chorale cantatas. As was usual for chorale cantatas, the unknown librettist used the first and last verses of Martin Luther's hymn verbatim for the opening chorus and the concluding chorale but adapted the texts of the inner verses. After two contrasting arias - the one dance-like, the second almost heroic - an almost enraptured accompagnato (Wir ehren diese Herrlichtkeit, und nahen nun zu deiner Krippen), in which the soprano and contralto mostly sing in parallel thirds and sixths, leads to a simple concluding chorale. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3103649). ISBN 9790007205690. Language: German/English. Translation: Henry Drinker. Bach's well-known church cantata Schwingt freudig euch empor BWV 36 (Up joyous raise your song), first heard in its final version on First Advent Sunday in 1731 at the Leipzig Nikolaikirche, can be traced back to a secular birthday cantata from 1725. The text is now revised to render the events of Advent - the rejoicing of the opening chorus, the loving veneration and the warm-hearted welcome of the three solo arias retained from the original cantata now all apply to the Messiah, who, as once in Jerusalem, should find a place in the hearts of the faithful. However, their unmistakeable Advent character derives from the fact that Bach contrasts the four festive settings from the secular cantata with three strophes from Luther's Advent chorale, Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, thus at the same time giving a voice to the Mystery of God made man. Key: G major. Language: Latin. The G major mass of Mozart followed a very special type of mass pattern, namely, that of the Missa pastoralis. In Mozart's time it was a widespread type of mass, especially in Bohemia and Italy, in which melodies and rhythms like those familiar from pastoral Christmas music were frequently found. The themes in this type of mass are song-like and often make use of folksongs or references to well-known tunes. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app!
