In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor. The cantata Sie werden euch in den Bann tun, part of Bach's first Leipzig annual cycle of cantatas and the earlier of two compositions of the same name, was probably first performed on the last Sunday after Ascension in May 1724. The text is concerned with suffering and the Antichrist, both of which are overcome by Christian faith. By employing all four ranges in solo capacities Bach creates the greatest possible variety. It opens, unusually, with a duet for tenor and bass, accompanied by two oboes and basso continuo. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3104400.

For the magnificent opening of the oratorio season at the beginning of 1736 Handel presented a composition which, like hardly any of his other oratorios, gave him the opportunity to display his musical artistry: John Dryden's ode Alexander's Feast or the Power of Music, published in 1696, demonstrates the power of music by the example of the ancient hero, Alexander the Great. From the impressive lament on the death of Darius, the King of Persia, to the boisterous Praise of Bacchus Handel avails himself of the entire breadth of the musical representation of the emotions and the possibilities for expression. In the text by Newburg Hamilton added at the end of work St. Cecilia elevates the events of the ancient heathen story, which Handel expressed in plastic, skillful polyphony. Later, this homage to the patron saint of church music, Handel also present the opportunity to perform the work on St. Cecilia's Day (22 November). For the first time the present new edition is based consistently on Handel's conducting score, which he used for his own performances of the oratorio, thus not only eliminating timeworn errors, but also offering clarity concerning the choruses, the arias and recitatives, actually performed in Handel's concerts, as well as their sequence of performance. The new Carus edition offers two performance versions: the version of the premiere in 1736, as well as a revised version from 1751. Furthermore, the inclusion of the Concerto for Harp HWV 294 (CV 55.294) is also possible; Handel composed this work especially for Alexander's Feast (as an illustration of Timotheus, the ancient poet who played the lyre). For this purpose the edition contains the appropriate alternatives for the sequence of the movements. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5507500.

The oratorio Passions by Homilius were among the last compositions of their kind in the 18th century. In an oratorio Passion the chorus is restricted mainly to singing the chorales and the interjections of the crowd; only the conclusion of a Passion provides an opportunity for an extensive choral movement. In the St. John Passion the final chorus emphasizes the supreme importance of the Crucifixion as the climax of St. John's Gospel. The free elements of the composition take the forms customary at the time: da capo arias are predominant. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3710300.

With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.7005300.

Just by reason of its scoring the Missa Sancti Hieronymi occupies a special place not only among the settings of the Mass by Haydn, but also in the repertoire of church music at the Royal Court of Salzburg. Other than the Hieronymus Mass and the Proprium motet Timete Dominum MH 256, which is connected with it, there are no additional surviving works in the Salzburg repertoire with this type of instrumentation. The unusual instrumentation, the contrapuntal style in the fugal sections, as well as the melodic invention and harmonic elaboration show that this Mass is a masterpiece. Mendelssohn composed his first oratorio Paulus under the impression of his own revival of J. S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 1829. He integrated chorale settings into St. Paul, for which he was accused by his contemporaries of making a stylistic break, using an element unsuitable to church music. In spite of these reservations, during Mendelssohn's lifetime St. Paul was one of his most popular works, which received numerous performances throughout Europe. Robert Schuman praised the inextinguishable color of the instrumentation and the brilliant play with all the forms of composition. He described it as a jewel of the present..
