Kaija Saariaho's Leino Songs were premiered by Anu Komsi (soprano) and Pia Varri (piano) on 9 July 2007 in Kaarle's Church, Kokkola, Finland, as part of the Kokkola Opera Summer Festival. Leino Songs are dedicated to Anu Komsi. Please note that Leino Songs for soprano and piano does not correspond exactly with Saariaho's work of the same name scored for voice and orchestra, and is therefore not suitable for use as a vocal score to that version.

This work, When Christ Was Born of Mary Free, sets the words of a traditional carol dating from the 15th century sensitively in D minor for the verse, moving to a more joyous F for the Chorus. Darke's papers list this piece as having been scored for Soprano solo, Chorus SATB and Piano. Harold E Darke was an English composer and Organist of international renown. Darke composed extensively for choir and Organ. In 1916, he established the Monday lunchtime Organ recitals at St Michael's Cornhill which continue to this day, the longest-running such series in the world. His setting of Christina Rosetti's poem In the Bleak Midwinter created a melody and lilting Organ accompanimentthat has never fallen from favour. It is regarded as one of the greatest of Christmas carols.

With an original text by the composer, Nkeiru Okoye’s WE MET AT THE SYMPHONY is a monodrama in three songs for soprano and string quartet or piano. The songs tell the story of a Black woman surprised to find a Black man in the sea of white faces at an orchestra concert, their subsequent romance, and her struggle to trust another Black man after betrayal and heartbreak. Okoye’s poignant, insightful, and sharp-witted poetry is set to dramatic and striking music that blends sensibilities from jazz, Broadway, and contemporary classical styles, with an unforgettable solo role for the soprano.

Kafka's ouvre is interspersed with moments of utter anxiety. Moments in which, induced by adrenalin, the blood pressure rises. Blood vessels which seem to constrict, pump enormous quantities of blood the pressure of which might make one believe that the head is going to explode. In The Judgment, an innocent opening story leads to one of the most unusual showdowns in world literature: The beloved father sentences his son to death by drowning; the son immediately obeys since his life, his existence almost explodes, becomes blurred, dissolves at the moment the judgment is pronounced. For me, the 'self' driving him - I imagine this as a high sound in the inner ear - could only be a soprano. This is why the actual 'fall' has turned out to be clear, almost friendly and why Georg only seems to want to breathe a soft and quiet 'Dear parents, I have always loved you' during the fall while no longer keeping the singing tone, shortly before death, almost casually, takes hold of him. Four Arms, Two Necks is a setting of a 17th century anonymous poem. The timelessness of the words in the love poem struck me and I set it to music, later dedicating the song to two friends, Anda and Bill Winters, in celebration of a wedding anniversary. Orpheus is from William ShakespeareÂ?s play The Life of King Henry VIII. Between 1996-2000, I composed and produced the music for audio recordings of all 38 Shakespeare plays in the Complete Arkangel Shakespeare collection. This song from the play was originallywritten for lute accompaniment and I later arranged the lute part for piano. Agua, Dónde Vas? is a setting of a poem by Federico GarcÃa Lorca. In 1998, I visited Barcelona to renew with a dear friend, Lucia from an illustrious family of flamenco musicians and dancers. We had met in 1985 when I first visited Granada and was hanging out in the flamenco tablaoÂ?s of the Albaicin and Granada proper. Through Lucia I got a glimpse of a world in which LorcaÂ?s poetry vibrated daily and as casually as the music, songs and rhythms that peppered and punctuated conversations, discussions, exchanges of opinions, mealtimes in homes and bars and the precious moments of just hanging out.
